I was about to leave a comment about the Orvis knot. After clicking on your link about testing both, I agree that the Orvis knot is bad ass. Nice video.
For me the 90 part is tough with like 6-7x leader... so I go back around that other loop one more time and works like a champ. Fast and easy knot. What people don't always consider is you need a quick knot that is easy to tie, especially when the water is cold and your hands area also cold. Some of the more involved knots are difficult in that situation.
D Chris, While this knot is a good knot I found a good way to tie it. The vidio shows useing a hackle plires to speed things up. I have found the using forceps is a lot better. With forceps you get nice retrieve it form the knot. You don't get the hangup with these that you get with hackle pliers
Did you try and do a comparison with the double davy knot? Did not see it on your website. Would love to see a comparison b/t the orvis and the double davy. Thanks!! your vids are so informative!! Love the FG knot tutorial!!
if you ask me, I'll say that there's basically no reason to use the regular Davy knot and not the Double Davy. The latter is just as strong, if not stronger, just as easy to tie and is said to be less prone to unraveling. Like I mentioned on your blog, it can as well be used to join mono line to mono leader (with two knots facing each other on the ends of both). I would love to see you testing this knot in different applications, I think it's worth it.
p.s. I take your recommendation for the Orvis knot and will see how it does for me and whether it can replace the Double Davy. Thanks for the excellent blog you keep, it's really useful.
+samuel glovacz Yes, it holds surprisingly well with mono, but we recommend the Orvis knot ahead of it because it's just as fast to tie and has a ~15% higher breaking strength... here's a link to see how it's tied: www.saltstrong.com/articles/orvis-knot/
+Niko Bobich Yes, the Palomar knot is a strong option. We did a test of it in particular, and it turned out that the traditional Palomar knot was stronger when tied on mono than the double Palomar.... but the double proved better for braid.
+Niko Bobich Here's a link to the Palomar knot test we did in case interested: www.saltstrong.com/articles/strongest-palomar-knot/ Note: The single Palomar proved to be stronger than both the Orvis and the Davy knot in our testing.
+Outdoors West Virginia That percentage of line strength is so hard to truly test that we steer away from it... much easier to go head to head to see which one is stronger. In our testing, the Palomar knot has proved to be stronger than the Davy knot.

I have not yet tested the Double Davy knot... it's on my list for new knots to test out though. Coming soon. Tight Lines!

p.p.s. hmmm... orvis to orvis for a mono-to-mono connection? I'll attend to that one as well :)
dose that really hold? and will it work with braid and flora?

+Salt Strong awesome thank you... keep up the great vids
double palomar is still good did this beat that? you should try a double davy

so if you had to guess.......what % would you say this knot holds? ie, the Palomar knot is said to hold about 95% of the strength of the line.

Some people say this knot is strong i found it is no where as strong as the improved clinch
Thanks for the feedback!
