      Depends on the server you play for. Homecoming everything is free. Reborn you have to earn things like items for base and capes for getting a 50. It’s closest to the original game.

    This was my first MMO. The best gaming community I have ever known. Some of the people I met playing this game I am still friends with to this day. We moved around from game to game, never quite finding another home. You can't imagine how I felt the day I learned about the underground server. I read everything I could find about it and I was there for Day 1 of the Homecoming server. And that's exactly what it was, a homecoming! I was literally brought to tears when I stepped into Atlas Park again for the first time in 12 years. And the community is still there. I love this game.

      Thats one of the funniest things, if NCsoft had just stuck it out, they could be making BANK with the rise of the MCU and other superhero movies if they'd kept up the game and maybe even bought out CoH2.

      Marvel released the Avengers movie in May 2012, then NCSoft announced this game would be shutdown in August 2012. Soooo yeah, poor timing.

    • @seanmalloy7249
      @seanmalloy7249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@luketfer Even if NCsoft had stuck it out, it wouldn't have been what they wanted. The vast majority of Asian MMOs don't make their money off subscriptions; they make their money off microtransactions in the cash shop, with people buying better or more attractive gear for individual characters. CoH had already established their store as account-wide one-time unlocks for costume pieces that had no in-game effects, since all of the ways to make your character better -- enhancements, temporary powers, accolades, etc. -- were already in the game, and you could acquire them just by playing the game. There was nothing NCsoft could do to monetize the game to make it an ongoing stream of microtransaction income directly to NCsoft (via their 'NCoin' common currency for buying items from the cash shops for NCsoft's various games) without breaking the game as it was and alienating the playerbase.

      Can't we all just be happy that we have so MANY active servers and projects going for what NCsoft considered a dead game with no call to it. Between all of those servers I'm wondering how many players CoH has now. I know Homecoming announced 100k players at one point. Do any of you guys now the figures for the other servers, I'm just curious is all since CoH (before it died) needed 100k to 'keep the lights on' as it were and that more than that would help with development further.

    I played CoH as a monthly membership player and dove deeper into the game when CoV launched. I remember the rallies to keep the servers open, and the subsequent farewell message penned by Andy Belford (who I believe was one of the subjects of the documentary movie "Second Skin", which drove me even further into the community/family aspect of MMOs in general). After server shutdown, I was desperate to find anything MMO that wasn't W.o.W. and what it had become with the inevitable release of the Blood Elf/Outland Expansion looming on the horizon. FF to 2008 and the release of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (W.A.R.) led by the infamous Paul Barnett of Mythic Studios, two entities both now reviled by the W.A.R. community, but not more than EA studios, aka "game dEAth", who shut down W.A.R. servers on the 5th anniversary of W.A.R.'s launch with tens of thousands of players remaining online and battling in the RvR lakes up to the moment EA flipped the switch and the lights went out. Thousands upon thousands of close friendships, many considering each other as "members of their own families", which never would have materialized were it not for the daily/nightly ventures into the "RvR lakes" bent on total destruction of the massive warbands of the enemy of one's respective chosen side: Destruction vs. Order, were lost in that instant.
    My GF and I, who solidified our now decade long relationship through our nightly excursions in W.A.R. - I played since launch day, she began playing in 2010 shortly after we met - and the members of our guild at that time who we continued to run with even after she and I moved to different guilds due to various reasons, some minor, some major, but none so horrible we would be estranged from former guildies, our relationships with them and current guildies becoming stronger through the years. The mismanagement by Mythic, the hands off approach of Games Workshop (creator and owner of the Warhammer universe) and the move of command of W.A.R. from Mythic, to BioWare, then to who sounded the games deathknell, game dEAth (EA studios), clearly put the writing on the wall about the future of W.A.R. Andy Belford was the community manager of W.A.R., the same role he had in CoH. It seems he has been unlucky enough to be part of great games that get axed for no other reason than turning profit losses. He was a great person to have in that role as he is foundationally a MMO gamer at heart, as can be seen in the movie "Second Skin." IIRC, I believe it was Andy that stayed aboard W.A.R.'s sinking ship, working double shifts, coding in new adventures and activities in some of the less populated areas of W.A.R. in a last ditch effort to revitalize and retain areas and players to convince EA that a shutdown was unnecessary and detrimental to their coffers and a tight, familial gaming community. And he did just that until he was excused from the project, I believe even without notice. That's a long time ago, however, and mixed with deep emotions on my part, of which I don't desire to relive as I've shed far too many tears over the loss experienced at lights out, and foreshadows news on a much brighter note: W.A.R. LIVES!!
    Now known as RoR (Return of Reckoning) continuing to be developed on a forever free, private server by a unique group of individuals, in addition to their "9-5 careers" and family obligations, daily invest several hours of purely volunteer time into not just keeping the original code running, but making vast, sweeping and game changing alterations to the original game, maybe not unlike those who have done the same with CoH. The only caveats are: This group owns the server and as such has overarching say in who is allowed to play. These are good people and do not allow ANY flack toward developers nor any form of in game cheating, dealing summarily and with finality toward those who dare challenge them or their decisions. That is all laid out in the official forum @ www.returnofreckoning.com and although sounds totalitarian, has led to the complete ongoing absence of gold farmers, botters, and any other sort of cheater, since the private server was launched, appropriately one year after game dEAth flipped the switch. The server cap was only in the low hundreds back then. Slowly, methodically, as almost every major and minor bug has been fixed, new aspects and abilities added to game play, while removing those that made no sense or were simply ineffective, the server cap is at 1500, which may not seem like many, until one thinks about the fact there is ZERO revenue produced by this game, with a pittance of a stipend produced by adverts on the official forum, all of which goes to the maintenance of the physical server, which has been upgraded (read: they bought a bigger, better one) twice, and remember that none of the devs receive a penny from anyone or anything inside or outside the game as this would bring Games Workshop copyright lawyers in like hounds on a blood hunt. The other major shift is that the sole server is located, IIRC in France and RoR has far more (satisfied) players who reside in that area of the globe who suffered terrible ping during the life of W.A.R. Those of us in the states now enjoy a similar experience, but nowhere near what our EU brothers and sisters did in W.A.R.
    So this volunteer group, running on a ZERO dollar/euro budget, have our beloved game running far better, while developing NEW content, abilities and armor than the original paid version. It just goes to show that it is never a large group with unlimited funds that makes sweeping change. It is the small, familial, underfunded and unsung but fully dedicated group that makes lasting, positive change in our world, irl and beyond.
    My hat is off to those of whom are continuing to manage CoH and I will drop by and spend time within that world now that I know it exists, and I hope any and all reading this whether veteran or no0b to RoR (W.A.R.) would drop by and see old friends or make new ones and enjoy all these selfless devs have to offer for free.

    What I liked about COH's F2P model vs other games, was that it pushed you in the direction of getting a Sub instead of keeping you a F2P player and a la carte your experience perpetually. the F2P model gave you a taste and eventually you'd sub up to get the rest.

    It's nice that it's back, but it's just not the same for me. I remember when it started out and we were playing through all the missions and everything. Now it seems everybody just rushes to level up with Death From Below, farming, task forces, and so forth until they're up in the end-game content. Rushing through stuff without taking time to enjoy the superhero experience was always something of a problem, but with the comeback it seems to have escalated to the max.

    I really felt as you should've mentioned Champion's Online as well DC Universe Online. Champions was also developed by Cryptic Studios, and I'll always see that game as the successor to CoH. Even if it's a bit P2W. DC Universe is the polished versions of both games, and is very much well alive, despite having a smaller player base as they did before. The thing unique about CoH was that it created the Hero MMO genre. The genre is one of the few that allows you to create a character that is truly yours. With Hero MMOs, theres a deep connection with your character that isnt seen in many other MMOs. With this, I dont see the future being with a CoH remake, but with Champions Online and DC. CoH died, not because they weren't in the right market, but because the market became bigger than CoH could compete with. Champions came out in 2009, and DC came out in 2011, a year before CoH died. CoH couldn't compete, it was a niche market they tried to fill for, and you cant compete with better quality games and a more active player base. If anyone wants to relive those CoH days, play Champions, if anyone wants to see a modern CoH, play DC.

      Ignoring graphics and different gameplay. City of heroes had a more complete world structure and actual variety. The concept of endgame wasnt built around optimization versus DC online(where you are forced to do powers a certain way to do content compently) all games have meta but it wasn't an issue in coh as compared to dcuo. I tried champions a few times and to me it is the worst of the 3. Dcuo isn't going to last and champions is forgettable to point It's a niche in and of itself. Hell coh homecoming servers are as amazing as I remember and I am still playing coh(they even fixed and released i24 and i25 that previously were unreleased).

      It's interesting that most Comic Book Superhero fans at the time COH was released were either Marvel or DC fans with fans of individual Image creators in there as well.
      COH wouldn't have much interested DC or Marvel heads much and Champions probably would have the interest of the old school Pen and Paper crowd since it was a brand they knew like D&D.
      It's probably a tough dollar in this PARTICULAR MMO market (Superheroes) because the total potential market is so fragmented. A generic Fantasy MMO might have a chance to interest a wide market fantasy fans but with Superheroes there are fans ready to ignore new projects based on what the game ISN'T. Not a Marvel game? Not interested! Not a DC product? Same? And the Asian market probably only wanted something that either looked like 80's Shonen Hero Anime or Marvel stuff.
      Honestly its impressive and amazing that COH lasted as long as it did.

    The best thing about COH was always: the class of Players. If you've tried the other MMORPG's, such as DCUO, and even GW2, you've noticed they are filled with many many vile players. The COH community was a fantastic bunch who would help you out, when able, and never treat you like dirt. I never found COH players to be anything but helpful. In a way, it's better that COH has continued the way it has, with supportive players who care about the Community....and it's great that the jerks remained in the other MMORPG games.

    I played the game too late, in 2011 I think. My character was named Eleknetic, by using eletric for combat and Kinect powers as defense. I wrote his own backstory tie-in with Blue Spectrum, the fallen hero that you can choose if you want to save or not in the tutorial. I played a lot of that game, but in late 2012, I knew something was wrong, I never understood why there was so many people in front of the "White House" in Paragon City with the emote of torch, I didn't know what was happening, so I continued with my playthrough. One day my older sis asked me to create an account for her and let her play for herself, but I couldn't because of what was about to happen. And then, one single day, the game closed, with my character, my progress...my friends. My sis couldn't even play it....I still miss that game, I even tried to play DCUO, but it ain't the same thing, it just ain't....

    When I played the game back when it came out, Lots of players would make copyright infringing characters and then they would show up later as blank default looking characters. These kind of looks would range from marvel, DC, NSFW, Star Wars and really anything that would be considered problematic. So they may have never been sued by these companies, they still did what they could to restrict what kind of builds you can make

    What I remember people were complaining about at the time:
    1. We want a loot based game. This game has no loot.
    2. We don't like instancing. This game not only has instancing, the instances are these boring office buildings -- the same ones over and over.
    3. I just came over from WoW (or Camelot) to check out the game, but I'm going back.
    Bye.
    4. My character got nerfed. Rage quit followed by loud denunciations on the forums.
    All the servers were well populated soon after release. Within a few weeks, half the people were gone and there were basically only two servers left with a decent number of players. Some of us thought the game was brilliant and stayed, but most clearly didn't and left. I think a lot of it was actually because people don't really like superhero MMOs and want Dwarves and Elves in a magical/medieval universe.

    • @luketfer
      @luketfer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few people suspect that NCsoft forcibly foisted a second game onto Paragon Studios which made them unprofitable (since trying to develop that game AND run City of Heroes turned them so, if they had stuck to just City of Heroes, they would have maintained profit margins) purely so they could shut them down. I honestly wouldn't put it past them.

    COH didn't die, it just took a break. But the recent mapserver event clearly showed that technologically it really is outdated. When Guild Wars 2 amounts of players meet in the same place you'll have a slideshow or worse. Even on high end machines. It's called MMO but remove the "massive" in front. A new engine and better netcode would make this game really good again, though. The following superhero MMO from Cryptic Studios (and engine base of Star Trek Online) was Champions Online btw. Similar but still not as good.

  • @wjre25
    @wjre25 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you missed some important developments, and got one thing wrong. The Marvel lawsuit went away because Cryptic got a contract to develop Marvel Online. Marvel Online never became a reality under Cryptic. Cryptic sold City of Heroes to NC Soft, because they were going to develop Marvel Online. During development, Cryptic lost the Marvel license, and Marvel Online eventually became Champions Online once Cryptic acquired the rights to the Champions RPG. Champions Online was exceedingly similar to City of Heroes with very few changes. This put NC Soft and Cryptic in direct competition. Marvel's license was eventually given to Gazillion Entertainment, who wouldn't release their game for several more years. However, what really killed subscribers early on was the release of Warcraft.

    The only "downside" to the Creator was you could replicate your fave comic book character.. which I got into a LOT of trouble with supports, as they had STRICT copyright rules, so's not to get sued by the major IPs etc etc.. but I would find ways to tweak my toon o.0 i.e. Wolverine became Bashful Badger, Green Lantern was Lime Flashlight etc with appropriate change to the costume, as you could get a strike for even a costume likeness o.0 Later, I got more creative and made my own designs and such ;)
