I'm hoping Shogi will double the amount of Elephant Gambit content on this channel.

I was your opponent and didn't know the rules either which made it even funnier for me. Thanks for the content!

What I appreciate the most in Shogi is the rule of using the enemy's pieces, after you capture them.
As you know, in Shogi there is no difference between Black and White.
I own a Shogi chessboard, but I cannot find people to play with.

I built a Shogi set in the 1970s (I was about ~12yo) because I was fascinated by it. And couldn't convince any of my friends to play it with me.

In Shogi there are different rules. If a piece gets to the back three ranks on the opposite side of the board it can promote.
The king moves normally and does not promote (The animal was a lion)
The gold general moves like a king except diagonally backwards (The animal was a dog)
The silver general moves like a king except sideways and directly backward (The animal was a cat)
The knight moves normally in the L shape but only going forwards (The animal was a rabbit)
The lance moves forward only any number of spaces (The animal was a hedgehog or armadillo I think)
The pawn moves only one space forward and captures the same way (The animal was a chick)
Any piece that promotes (except kings, rooks, and bishops) moves like a gold general. And rooks and bishops keep their original movement adding the kings movement. And the king cannot promote. And there are crazy house rules (you can drop pieces)

Shogi is so much fun. I played chess as a kid but shogi was the first chess like game I spent time reading more deeply about various openings. Even met up with people locally and played for a while. Then chess has become more of n interest recently.
Compared to shogi chess pieces are super OP though.
But the counter to that is that you can resurrect captured pieces which makes forced sequences complex and interesting.
Also there is no instant castling. So castling correctly pretty much requires a PhD since you’ve got to put all your pieces in place to defend while also constructing a clever little path for the king to tuck himself in cozily.
The different castles even have fancy names.
About the characters… you actually learn to distinguish them pretty quickly.

Wow, the first game of shogi wasn't a mistake, it was a great idea for a movie! I'm a strong shogi player (1st dan) and I still had a lot of fun watching it. You are at a good point to challenge yourself, e.g. to the first 5 wins. I'd really like to watch it! Stronger players will be curious to see how you're doing, and weaker players will be drawn to this exciting game. DO IT ! Good luck and I'm looking forward to the challenge! Ps it's also a good idea to do the same in xiangqi (Chinese chess)

Would love to see you try Xiangqi (chinese chess), it's more similar to international chess but with some interesting mechanics (e.g., the cannon piece, knights that can be blocked, the general being restricted to the palace, etc.)

i used to play so many chinese chess variants (not board games but still a board thingy), would be interesting to see those in a vid. chinese chess is a classic would be interesting as its pieces are somewhat similar to chess. My favourite is another one though, but no idea the name of it.

I'd say you did great for knowing nothing to start. Most sites (not that there are that many) let you use normal chess pictures. It is a great game just when I grew up no one around that played (same for Go). That was Corpus C seems like you were in NY expect a lot diff there.
