    Yeah beautiful boat! Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

    Good Luck Man! I truly hope you succeed where I failed... My attempt with a schooner crab claw on a proa proved wrong only because I needed crew for shunting, single handed it was impossible shunting 2 sails at once. Crystal Clear was too small to carry enough crew to handle her. I never really thought about your solution, which if I understand correctly, is building a much bigger boat that can carry more crew to solve the problem I had. I just THOUGHT it was IMPOSSIBLE. May the force be with U. Eqilibre was the most beautiful proa on utube, may your new boat follow in her footsteps.

      It's not my ship It's my brother's (seen both on the clip and the picture I just posted with his daughter). Sadly I moved away from Martinique and haven't been on a boat in 5 or 6 years now :( This one is now actually *still* Equilibre, but more frankenstein style. After Equilibre was split in two by an unlucky combination of low tide and high waves the new one got badly damaged during a tropical storm. Jerry rebuild Equilibre using parts of both ships, so, in essence, it's still Equilibre, albeit a longer version of itself :) It is now again a single sail proa though.

      @@SocialNetwooky Thanks for the update. Single sail proas work better, My first Proa had a schooner crab claw, it was very hard to shunt, so hard that without crew I couldn't shunt without getting backwinded! 2 sails was a a job for 2 people. my new proas with single sail junk rig are perfect......

      @@BalkanShipyards That's interesting. I always thought the 2 sails would be great, to lower the centre of gravity, rather than 1 tall sail. Assumed you would shunt using 1, then set the other.
      For convenience though, the single mainsail, with furling jibs on either end, appeared simple.

    • @BalkanShipyards
      @BalkanShipyards 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MrSplinter51 2 roller furlings is the heaviest, most expensive, with the most windage way to go. You do agree? It's just wrong, the furled back sail has so much windage, going so high that it must seriously disturb a boat in trim. No problem add a powerful auto pilot and take the bad design to the next step.... Shunting with a single CC may be possible, On Crystal Clear I never tried it, cos it's more work, and after the shunt your head sail becomes your aft sail, the boat will point high into the wind and get caught in irons till you raise the head sail to take the bow off. Using crew that knows the drill makes it simpler. Shunting Crystal Clear was hard though... Keep Shunting man, Balkan Shipyards

      On the single rig vs. schooner rig, my personal experience is the opposite.
      On my small 20 ft beach proa, I had first an old A-class catamaran rig (aluminum mast). So a single main sail in the middle of the main hull. I found shunting really hard; as soon as you power up the sail on the new tack, the boat rounds up into the wind, before you have enough speed for the rudder to bite in the water and counteract this initial reaction.
      Then I rigged 2 Moth rigs (heavily modified masts to be "semi-unstayed") and it was much easier to shunt. On the new tack, sheet in first the (new) forward sail; the center of effort being forwards avoids an aggressive round up before you get up to speed. Once you have speed and the (new) rudder is efficient, trim in the aft sail... And I sail it single handed.

      Mon frère est normalement plutot réservé en ce qui concerne ses bateaux, en particulier quand ils sont encore a un stage très prototypique. Mais je peux voir pour vous mettre en contact. J'ai créé un compte email [DELETED]. Il n'existera que quelques heures (jusqu'a 23:00 pour etre exact) car les comptes E-Mail sur youtube c'est pas vraiment une bonne idée ;) Envoyez votre addresse email a ce compte et je la transmettrait à mon frangin.

    What happens if the wind changes 180 degrees ?

    • @SocialNetwooky
      @SocialNetwooky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming it's not a tornado and the wind shifts over time (in a storm for example) and if you don't change the trim she'll keep the same "allure" (angle relative to the wind) throughout, effectively making a 180 degree turn and ending sailing in the opposite direction by the end. We had that happen a couple of times with Equilibre's previous iteration, when we were just cruising around and not aiming to get to a specific position.
      If the direction and sudden and violent the masts (small note: the mast count is back to one now) are secured by lines and *shouldn't* fall or break. The boat will eventuall readjust itself with a bit of help. Even if the mast falls down, provided nobody get's bonked on the head, it's only semi-catastrophic. We had that ALSO happen more often than not while testing new setups and materials and re-rigging in the middle of the ocean is not THAT difficult (not *FUN* but definitely doable).

      Proa-like, but that's not a Proa. Proa catches wind only from the outrigger side. How do you tack?

    • @tincoffin
      @tincoffin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RRTT-tk5tp I imagine you have to 'wear ship' .Turn away from the wind so that the wind passes over the stern and come up on the new tack. it was the same on the square riggers.

      yes. although Jerry went back to a single sail a couple of weeks ago, as shunting the two sails was proving to be too much of a hassle and barely doable alone.

      Thanks for that,
      I definitely like the idea of moving to a single sail, makes you less dependent on crew and a simpler rig. I’m torn between crab claw and junk, but I have a yearning to be able to go further therefore I need speed. I will be on tenterhooks waiting for further news. Any chance of some drawings, dimensions etc?

      @@robingraham6820 knowing my brother I wouldn't hold my breath for any actual specs. He has a very "organic" way of building his boats. He can probably tell you the length and width, and how much sail *approximately* it has (he is a professional sail maker, so he just sew the sails he needs) but everything else would be uterly vague, based on experience and experimentation.

    • @robingraham6820
      @robingraham6820 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oops, misunderstanding!
      I assumed you were the builder.
      If you do come across any more info I would be very happy to hear more. I am planning to build something suitable for using in strong winds, open seas and cold/wet weather. Frequent trips of 15 miles. Here in the Orkney Isles the winters are WIIINDY, and daylight hours short. It would be nice to get where I am going quickly and possibly get home in the same day. Your brother’s boat is probably way too big for my budget, but I might get some ideas if I could get a closer look.
      Anyway, thanks for your help. (j.robin.graham@gmail.com)
