  • This is a series of videos demonstrating the building of a bamboo, pacific proa. Both processed and raw bamboo is used in its construction, together with fiberglass and "green" epoxy resin. I hope you enjoy the process as much as I have.

    Well done video. I had just dug up my copy of Dierking's book and was contemplating the possibilities of a stitch and glue hull when I decided to search videos. Best of luck with your bamboo version. It's beautiful. How heavy is it at this stage? Are you planning to use bamboo yards for a crab claw rig?

    Wow that's beautiful. I wouldn't care if floats or not. Some people like building out of original or natural materials. Others build traditional craft from carbon fiber. Bamboo is sort carbon fiber in a sense.

    I have seen a few vids on YT about engineered bamboo, it is amazing stuff. Very interesting project Adrian. Looking forward to seeing how it goes; the hull looks like a knife, that will slice through the water very nicely.

    • @aquasol2121
      @aquasol2121  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James, my inspiration to build a proa was partly influenced by your trip to Rapa Nui :) I'm a complete novice at this, a good person to ask is Rael Dobkins, he has built several and is currently on his 4th build I think. He has a really kool channel and have leaned a lot from him. th-cam.com/channels/d9ghqB2aRAO6aL9ZAOHKMA.html

    Why did you take the bamboo strip roll apart? Wouldn't it have been easier to just keep together?! Great video btw. Lots of details :) Thanks!

    Great stuff Adrian, many thanks for sharing. Is it just one layer or bamboo? amazing to think how light this is going to be.

    • @aquasol2121
      @aquasol2121  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I used just the one layer of bamboo with fiberglass on both sides. but it is very flexible. I have bulkheads at 30cm intervals that are filled with PU foam and that provides the additional support required. To build a larger craft it likely require more layers of bamboo and fiberglass.

      Thanks Frank, locally we have a bamboo importer and wholesaler Brightfields here is a link to the product www.brightfields.co.za/bamboo-board-cladding also see my reply to Tom H, hopefully you should be able to find a local supplier where you are?

    Very well done! I have a very strange question...the processed bamboo...how the hell do they get it so thick and straight and would you be able to duplicate it?

    • @aquasol2121

      Hey! hope you guys are enjoying your trip and thanks for the goodies, your cap features in the next vid :) Good question, its hard to explain but in a later video I will show you how, but basically they split flatten and plane the strips.

    Boa noite tudo bem?
    O senhor está em que país ou local ?
    Eu estou estudando o bamboo como um material e na sua viabilidade na construção uma embarcação de 44 pés e pelo que vi o senhor conhece mais deste material do que eu então poderíamos trocar informações?
