I'm a community palliative care nurse. Don't wait to do things you want to do. You don't have infinite time. A single diagnosis can change your life and it can come at any time. I've seen people go from "healthy" to dead in less than 2 months. I've met people who just bought a new home and moved to a new city for retirement, received a cancer diagnosis, and died before all the boxes can be unpacked. Save what you need, but don't over-save to the point where you compromise your enjoyment.

I'm also a nurse (not palliative care) and have seen similar stories numerous time. Find the balance. Do things throughout your life, not just at the end of life. Find a way to enjoy life all along the way, not just the future that may never come. That's not an excuse to recklessly blow your money, but to seek balance between saving and spending.

      Hi Nicol
So very true as financial adviser I see this happen more and more every day.
Every now and again when I share some nice outings, I get people saying yes they will add it to their bucket list.
My basic comment, if you really like it, plan for it now and the h@ll of that stupid list, you will never end up following that list.
      Wishing you more than enough!

Quite right, when you retire swap working for regular exercise. I am 74 yrs of age and know from my own experience that inactivity will lead to a rapid decline in
mental.and physical health, also a shorter and less enjoyable retirement. Just learn to accept that exercise has to be a part of your daily routine, equally as important as eating and drinking.

I just found you two today. My wife will be 70 this year and is still working because she enjoys her job. I just turned 63. The plan was to work until I'm 65. We are both self-employed. All I have been focusing on is the money. Only recently have I thought about our declining health as we get older. This information is just what I needed to hear. I will share this video with my wife.

Don’t wait until your memory fades and you have amassed lots of money that you can no longer use for your much deserved retirement.

Mom was a stay-at-home. Dad retired at 60 & at 68 developed a brain tumor that took his life. Mom said it was a good 8 yrs. They went shopping for grandkids. Took a road trip across country & visited a lot of people on the Christmas card list. Took craft n gardening classes together. One yr made cabbage patch dolls for all the grandkids and had fun dressing them. When mom reached 70, she had a tough year. But we got through it & she lived an active life for another 22 yrs.
Hang in there Norm, 1 or 2 tough yrs and you can be active for another 25!

I am a emergency medicine physician. I see people from all ages and understand aging very well. When I talk to my financial planners they talk about all the things I can do when I retire with my money and I can't hold my laughter. I've always told them that they know numbers but the realities of aging escape their intellect.

Amazing content, thank you so much for your honesty and for making this video. My 55th birthday was yesterday, my son finishes high school in late May and will begin University in August. Being a single Mom means there is no way I'll retire until I'm 65. Being an "older" Mom, I have always stressed to my son that the present is now! No one is ever promised another tomorrow no matter your age. Already, we've traveled to two countries and seven US states. I've always been very aware to cram every available opportunity into our lives: a walk in the park, a live performance, travel, a new restaurant, etc... Thank you for this reminder, the timing was perfect and heaven sent, live now!

For the past months that I had been viewing videos about retirement, this one really hits the spot. As you said, almost all of those videos are about the financial side, but none that I have seen so far are about the actual practical suggestions about when that time comes. I am planning to work until 67 (or even extend to 70), and my wife, who is 5 years younger, plan to do the same, and I just realised from what you mentioned that it means 5 years of me being alone (partially, if she continues doing part-time work), and when we are both retired, then I will be 72 and she will be 67 - not much time left to spend together with good health and all anymore. After all, what I am looking forward to is spending my remaining years with the person I love to be with, and indeed, why not make that time the earliest possible (still considering, of course, the financial side of things). Honestly, I am so focused on the finance rather than what retirement really is/means.
Thank you very much to both of you for the wake-up call, and I am very happy to have found your channel.
Now time to recalculate my projections... 🙂

You really seem to "get" what we feel about retirement and living together as a couple. Today these are the best days of your life, you are at your healthiest today. Planning a budget and really thinking what you need in retirement, this is a new beginning and you don't need to compete with coworkers and neighbours to have the best house, best car, biggest T.V. We sold our "big" house, sold the second car cut the cellphone and live happy, together. We hope you and your wife can find the path to retirement together. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. 😀😀

Excellent advice. I was 18 months younger than my husband of 41 years. He retired at age 56 and I was planning on retiring at age 62, seven years after him. Our house was going to be paid off and I would be eligible for social security benefits at age 62. Unfortunately God had other plans. My beloved husband died very suddenly and unexpectedly this past August at the age of 61. He didn’t live to see my 60th birthday or the retirement we planned to spend together. If I had retired when he did we could have spent five years together in retirement. As it is we didn’t even get to spend a day.

Hard to hear, but such an important message.
Sadly I lost my husband suddenly last September. He was 58. We had so many plans. He loved his job and was able to work remotely. He also had a lot of vacation so retirement didn’t seem necessary. I lost my job to the pandemic in November 2020.
I am just highlighting this because we are not guaranteed our health or longevity. Also, many people our age (Im turning 58 next month) still have children in university. It’s another reason he wanted to keep working.
I am grateful that we travelled a bit in 2019, purchased a travel trailer in 2020 (camping 35 nights in total), and moved to the country in 2021. All in all he really enjoyed the past few years.
I agree with you. Don’t worry so much about the money. Heath is the greatest wealth. I am taking stock of my lifestyle including weight and fitness. I want to be around to enjoy time with my children and do the things I want to do while I am still able.
    Thanks again.

Hello Esther, We are so sorry for your loss there just aren't any words... Health was the motivation for us to do this video so many folks get caught up with savings for retirement. We always wanted to retire while we had a young outlook. We also married young 18 and 19 and had our first child 4 years later, so we were the young parents at our children's schools and university. Your video today addressed a thought I had on my mind for awhile. I worry since I have a bad back and an arthritic ankle at 54...what is my mobility going to be like at 65? It scares me. I am retiring this year because I have seen too many people wait until 60 or 65 to retire and tragically they did not have a lot of time left to enjoy the pensions they earned. I will have to be frugal for the next 5yrs, but after working full-time since I was 20, I just want time to enjoy coffee in my garden, feed and watch the birds, walk my dogs and go camping in the mountains. My life will be simple but all I really want is the time to enjoy those simple things that enrich one's soul. Thank you for your input as it solidifies that I believe I am making the right decision.

It is so true, if you don't have your health the retirement picture is not going to be as you dreamed. I did the same thing my husband retired at 60,I continued to work ,wanting to pad the nest egg for retirement together. My husband has diabetes and macular degeneration and is going blind. certainly not in the plan.what has happened is I have retired to be a caregiver after I had already taken care of my mother 8 yrs (alzheimers). It is a labor o love but I will never see what I worked so hard for. Pay attention to your health and retire together, you can't strategize for everything life may throw at you. As we used to say in contracting "the money's great but you can't spend it if you're dead" . I think Covid warped me past the decision point. I went from a youthful 57-year old who passed for being in his 40s to a 59 year old whose health and energy is in his 70s. So I just coast on at work hoping for a health miracle.

I have just joined your channel. I like it. I am 66 and a retired soldier and soon to be a retired civil servant in about a year. The wife is 70 this year, and she retired over a decade ago. I have been thinking about retirement for the past 5 years. Financially we are set. Two Gov pensions(me) one Gov pension for the wife + SSN + over 7 figures in savings and ZERO debt. The wife has had cancer twice and recovered and so far all is well. We have been travelling for a long time, not waiting for retirement...as there is no guarantee there will be a retirement. I am healthy, and very active and plan to stay that way as long as possible. I have decided to do volunteer work the first year plus in retirement so as not to go "cold turkey" into retirement. So the idea is to have an itinerary set up from day one...and slowly change it as I ease into retirement. My biggest fear is to be bored! I do have many hobbies....Photography, cycling, hiking, reading, motorcycling. So as my countdown clocks clicks away on my desk I look forward to a NEW life.....

Good advice about 1 retiring before the other. I had that couples experience. My partner is 7 years older, retired about 7 years ago, and about 1 year ago he was diagnosed with a fatal brain disease (Glioblastoma). I have taken some time off to be with him this last 8 months, during this moment in time, before he passes and although we have enjoyed this time together, we could not travel as we planned because of the realities of Medical care that is linked to our location - so we traveled short periods locally and stayed put. With that said - I am so glad I took this time off to be with him. No matter where we are, it has changed me profoundly (no stress) and he is happier to have me in a stress free mode. *** He advises everyone who ask's: Remember 3 Things - Quality, Quality, Quality Time not quantity.

Thank you so much for bringing up this topic. I agree. No one tells you about this. I just retired a few months ago at 60 years of age and I am so glad I did. Retiring during a pandemic is not as fun as I would like but it is still a vacation everyday even if I can't travel yet. My stress level has gone way down now that I do not have to go to work. I wanted to be healthy enough to enjoy my retirement, so I chose to do it early. I worked out a budget and practiced using that budget for 15 weeks before
I actually retired. It is working much better than I imagined.

I totally agree! I retired last October after 41 years as a Respiratory Therapist working in a Neonatal Intensive Care the majority of that time. Stress was the number one reason I retired. It really takes a toll on your health. I retired at 59, three years earlier then planned, but so glad I did. The stress was unbelievable especially with Covid. I couldn’t do another winter of it.

I did tell him I will retire at 60 next January but wasn’t 100% convinced this was best for me. Watching this has made me realise if I want to spend quality time with my husband I really do need to commit to retire

Thanks for a video on retirement that focused on health. No one talks about that and it is very important. When I was 50 I felt very energetic even though I was very overweight. I felt quite young or around 35-45. Just a few years later I was diagnosed with diabetes and hip issues. Now at 58, I feel tired all the time and don't feel as young as I used to. Just a short 8 years and everything changed. Planning on retiring at 60 which I will be prepared Financially so now I have to prepare physically, health wise for retirement by losing weight, getting a hip replacement and have a plan in place during retirement to stay physically active and healthy.

This video really resonates with me today. My husband just retired at the beginning of this year and I'm contemplating quitting at the end of my contract in June. My husband is 6 years older. The hold back is that I don't have a pension. However, he has a full pension (with survivor benefits) , health benefits, an insurance plan and we have our savings. No debt at all. We're both relatively healthy. Both of our fathers died suddenly. Both at the age of 67 years. Nothing is guaranteed. Time is precious.

Just subbed. One of the most important topics I've ever seen listed on the internet! Husband and I are over 70. Advice from this perspective: (1.) be very careful and knowledgeable about your diets. When you eat remember your mouth can keep you going. It just needs to know when and what to eat. Choosing the right foods is harder than you might think. By our age, half of us have diverticulosis! (2) Motion is Lotion... You stay ALIVE because of the motions you choose. For us it's tai chi and yoga. It took over two years of guided instruction to really feel comfortable with the forms, but pain is not a part of our lives. So the hours spent on exercise are worth it! (3) expect great changes in perspective. Among our best friends, key words are "Pace yourself." I feel seventeen, but young people's exercise (skateboards, etc.) are no go..... (4) you're retiring from a job, that's all. There so many wonderful ways to invest yourself. I helped raise all my grandkids, wouldn't trade the memories for the world! My husband still teaches, just not for pay. (5) life is a good wine. Savor each day, each moment. It'll never be quite the same again. Blessings.

    • @ThisIsOurRetirement

Wow what a great comment we are learning from you “Motion is Lotion “ and life is a good wine 🍷Savour each day and each moment we couldn’t say it any better thank you 🙏 Cheers 🍷🌺🍺

That is excellent advice. My partner and I both retired in our early 60's - together! Part of the reason we retired a bit early was to maintain our health, so we could travel and spend time together. COVID has set some limits on the traveling, of course. But we have still managed to visit family in other states and use our timeshare more often. We exercise at the same (or sometimes higher) level as we did in our 40's and 50's and watch our diet. That doesn't mean we will never get sick, but it does help us feel good and strong on a daily basis. Much luck to you both in the future. I'm so glad I found your channel!

For me being so restricted for the past two years has accelerated my physical decline. Being forced to stay home so much (i do still go to work 4 days a week but other than that sat at home) due to covid restriction has caused many people to spend a lot of time on the couch. That is a bit of an excuse, because I could be exercising at home etc - but by eliminating so many recreational activities over the past two years I'm getting 'older' faster than ever!

That’s interesting. My husband and I were lucky enough to retire early, we were 56 and 54 but as my husband is older I did chose to work an extra three years. I think your experience is relevant when you both have the same interests and do lots of things together but we have different interests and are a little more independent so my husband’s retirement wasn’t affected at all by the fact I continued to work. We always planned on retiring at 55 because my father who’s 92 has always said life’s just a long weekend and you must make the most of it. He retired at 56 and it’s his ambition to live until at least 96 because he worked 40 years and he wants 40 years of retirement! My mother is also still living and 91. You are quite right about your health, I retired 4 years ago and my health has deteriorated significantly! I don’t think the pandemic has helped. Thanks for sharing your perspective on retirement.

I just found your videos and absolutely love them! I'm in my fifties and thinking of retiring early because even at my age, I'm finding my health is slowly declining even though I do take care of myself. No one knows how much longer we'll be alive and kicking, so got to start doing what you love as much as possible.

Hi Tina & Norm, this is one of the most valuable precious advice i got from people who have retired. I always thought I can work ‘til 70 y.o & then start traveling & enjoy my retirement life…however, with 2 yrs of covid that has cancelled many of my vacation plans & with what I’ve been seeing from people around me, I am looking into retiring much much earlier than 70. Life is full of unexpected surprised & sometimes, health situation can alter your future plans especially traveling overseas. I am no longer putting my travel plans to ‘later on when I retire’, and do it once omnicron situation subsides. Life is very short & we only live once. Thanks again, both of you! Be well & safe.

Thanks so much for sharing your story, when we were younger we thought as most do we would live “forever”, now we are in retirement we want to share a sense of slight urgency to do the things you thought about. We hope you have some great travels and get to do what you always hoped to do.

The principle behind early retirement is that time is the scarcest resource we have. Health condition is the main variable that affects it, so having a healthy life is as important as saving/ investing for retirement. This is obvious, even outside the FIRE world, but everyone seems to ignore it and live their lives as they are immortal. Great topic to bring to the table! Cheers

@@ThisIsOurRetirement Thanks. I'm about to turn 50 and "staying young" is one of my life's mottos. I do lots of sports as hobbies, additionally I practice Crossfit for healthy reasons (staying flexible, retaining muscle mass, keeping good cardio, etc).

Just be careful you don’t do too much and wear out knee or hip cartilage, there’s a fine line between healthy and incurring an injury.

Well Tina & Norm you hit the nail on the head. Thank you for your thoughtful approach to retirement. This vlogg will no doubt resonate with many retirees and hopefully with pre-retirees. I just sent it to cousins where the husband wants to keep working to save, save, save and the wife wants to retire and travel. Hopefully it will shed a bit more light for them.

This video is exactly where we are in our life, my husband is retiring in May and I just turned 60 but we had the same conversation as you guys and I am retiring too, we are moving out West to spend more time with our grandchildren and take our small trailer into the mountains as well as spend more time in the u.k to be with our other 2 grandchildren, as soon as the children left home we was fortunate enough to travel to everywhere on our bucket list because we know how quickly life can change. Thank you for a brilliant video x

As everyone else has already said, a really good video. Thanks Tina and Norm. You can’t put a price on your health so working for an extra few years to earn a few more dollars could be a poor trade-in for the precious time you lose in retirement. That was certainly one of the motivators for us retiring early. Hopefully you will both stay excited about travelling for many more years as I love watching your videos :-).When travelling gets harder later down the track you could always change the way you travel and do more organised tours etc where the planning, driving and all the hard work etc is left to someone else.

Me and my spouse, five year age difference, watched this video together and you certainly sparked some deep conversation. We have been trying to decide when is the best time to jump…and it is scary when there is no crystal ball. But you bravely took on the discussion of something that holds certainty…health will decline. It was something we had not given it’s proper “weight” in our analysis. Money always seems to get the highest consideration…and trying to determine when is “enough” can give a couple paralysis analysis! Lol We are so grateful that you two have given us a front row seat into your decisions and your experience. Your insight about doing this as a couple was also something we needed to hear. Thank you Tena and Norm for putting yourselves out there and sharing your beautiful personalities!
