      Do you know any knowledge on the rate at which plants like moss balls can absorb ammonia? Definitely agree don't want too many plants on the surface re gas exhange. Plus it blocks out the light.

    • @unusualaquariumecosystems5805

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unusualaquariumecosystems5805 Moss balls grow very slowly, so in reality, they probably don't absorb a lot of ammonia. Fast growing plants tend to absorb a lot more ammonia.

    You're right about bettas interacting with the plants: I had one in a tank with a lot of crypts, and he was always swimming the leaves and stems, popping his head out to look at me as if to say "I am a great jungle explorer." :D

    I just subscribed to your channel. You are great at explaining the how and why things work. I am setting up my first ever aquarium with live plants. I only have a small amount of room to place an aquarium. I bought a 5 gallon tank. I am going to put a Betta in it. I do believe I have over planted it though. It looks very jungle like. I hope my fish friend will be okay when I get him. At this point, I am cycling the tank. Once the water parameters are correct, I will be adding my fish. I am extremely happy that you did the video about setting up a sponge filter. I had watched several videos from Aquarium CO-OP about filters and made the decision to add a sponge filter. Once I received the filter I realized , I didn't know how to set it up. Thanks to you, it's up and running! Thanks again.

    Great video. I use anubias broadleaf in my betta tanks. I also put some of the pothos in the tanks. My fish use the pothos leaves as hammocks, all I can see at night is the tips of their tails hanging off the edge of the leaves. The leaves do eventually start to rot, but it takes months, and then I just replace them with new leaves from the mother plant.

  • @tanyavs1
    @tanyavs1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting! I also removed the moss balls and hornwort from my betta tanks because no betta I've had interacted/enjoyed either plant. I have a decent carpeting of littorella uniflora and my betta loves to lay on top or squeeze between plants. They root really well, so he hasn't lifted any and I can vacuum over them no problem. I had ONE plant, with five leaves and it looked completly different when I bought it. It died back, in fairness it was in sand, so when I moved it to Tropica soil, it took off and covered two of my tanks! Tropica soil is so light it's really easy for runner plants to propagate. It's actually a really nice replacement for the non-aquatic mondo grass I got duped into buying early on!

I noticed that he is often lying in the substrate under plants or sometimes in them. I was concerned about this until I saw your video. I guess bettas are lazy fish. I often see any of my community fish hanging around the bottom among plants, but I rarely see them on the substrate or lying in the fronds like the betta does.

I do want to use live plants because of all of the benefits it brings, but I’m not sure if it’s the best idea to use live plants in my first fish tank ever, I’m worried I might struggle (I don’t have much experience when it comes to fish) Would you recommend using live plants? Or should I just stick with fake ones until I get the hang of things? Great video by the way!

      Hi there ! If you worry about tackling both live plants and a fish, I would recommend lucky bamboo. They’re just the cute little bamboo shoots people often put on their desk at office jobs. You can totally submerge them and they do great, to the fish it’s like being in a life size bamboo jungle and the bamboo with help with the nitrate levels in the water (:

    How long should I cycle a new planted tank before adding my betta and tankmates? I'm 15 and I want to start a planted betta tank. But all the research I've done and videos I've watched have said to cycle the tank for a couple months before adding the fish. I plan to cylce the tank for at least a week to get the Nitrate and PH levels safe. But should I wait longer? I also want to put in a couple snails to help with algae growth. And I was thinking about a small 6-7 school of Ember tetras. I could really use some advice, tips, or just info. Thank you!

    I found my betta really liked Water Wisteria, which grew really big so he had lots of branches and leaves to explore.
    What's the light coloured rock with holes that you have? It looks really cool, I'd like to try and find something like that around me when I can.

    What are those adorable things darting around on the tank sides/heater? Also, my koi betta Swim Shady LOVES his plants/driftwood. He'll sleep on the driftwood, or there is a spot that a plant comes up and he'll lay on the leaf, while another plant's leaf is overhanging over him. His little plant bed and leaf blanket. So precious

    I actually just purchased the plant I think it's a stem plant but it's has large leaves that are kind of one side is green and the bottom is like a reddish purplish.
    I just planted them into the gravel because they don't have a rhizome and they don't actually have Roots so I'm assuming it's a stem plant.
    I actually bought too many plans because I didn't realize how many came like in a little container when you buy them.
    pretty much added plants to everything I have because I really had no idea how many plants there were.

    Is there a plant that can withstand the tannins? I only have success with moss balls but like Amazon sword, Hornworth and Wisteria plants they melt then withered maybe because they can't deal with slightly acidic water.

    I'm a new betta owner, and this channel taught me lots of things about keeping my Solomon (my betta) healthy. He is an HMPK.
    I still cant decide what plant to pu on his tank, because I don't want to put soil in it, and it's just a 6 liter tank.
    What can you suggest please?

    • @pjp9383
      @pjp9383 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, hope that you and Solomon are doing well. I would just like to encourage you to consider upgrading your tank. 6 litres is only about 1.5 gallons, and most fishkeeping channels, clubs, etc will encourage 5 US gallon minimum for a betta. Some will go as low as 3 gallons, but any lower than that ... well, it would be like expecting you to live in a bathroom, 24 hours a day. I'm not sure what you could keep in terms of plants - plants will need a certain amount of light, and I assume there may not be a light on that small a tank? I kind of hope not, because it would be quite glaring in such a small space, if there was.

      buying plants locally makes it easier for plants to thrive as the water from your tap is closer to the water of your neighbors tap (in theory) i love ebay esp if u sort it by distance.
