Very enlightening talk! .... No Beginning ... No Endng! " .... Since there is no beginning, there's no need for a creator!..." Beautifully said! My day starts in the morning and ends in the evening. Then I do it all over again ... Until I'm dead. Then when I die, I get recycled ... Another birth. Then off I go again. Day in day out. Death. Birth. Repeat! Forever! Endlessly!

    • @bayreuth79
      @bayreuth79 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s a mistake. As has been pointed out by Ibn Sina and Thomas Aquinas, amongst others, creation does not require a beginning. The root meaning of cause is the presence of the cause to the effect. God, therefore, could be the eternal cause of creation; it could have always existed dependent on him.

+Karl BHX There is always plenty of room for debate and talks in Buddhism. Nothing is absolute or certain for each individual until you can prove that your argument can benefit yourself and other people. In Buddhism, people are encouraged not to believe any doctrines/ belief that have been handed down for generations etc.. Perhaps, Kalama Sutta in Buddhism can better explain the concept of how we shouldn't believe anything until we can agree that such belief can lead to happiness and not harming anyone.
    www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/an/an03/an03.065.than.html
So in short, you don't have to believe of what Ajahn Brahm/ any other religious leaders/ scientists have to say. You can try to prove it yourself, challenge it and see if it can benefit yourself and other people.

  • @PhoenixProdLLC

It would be really cool to talk Consciousness with AB for a few hours.
Aristotle asserted the mind as a sense but..where touch is direct input, sight as well, etc etc,the brain does more than that. So much more! And the confusion is: is the brain the mind? Is it from the Buddhas pov? Or, are they different things? If that's the case, be specific about it and never confuse the two.
Beyond them both: What *is* Consciousness? Define it, go ahead. But can you define it for others? On what authority?
All you know is what you experience. That's why you cannot say Person A, who suffers due to x is suffering less/more than Person B who suffers due to Y. One person's suffering may be another person's pleasure. You can't decide that either suffers less/more because YOU find x/y to be of a certain value. Cogito ergo sum.
Squash the brain, all thinking stops, as measured by a flat line and the corpse it inhabits. Does that squash the brain? HERE is where the assertion of Mind or, in other religions, Spirit, the onus is wholly and fully on Religion to Prove it exists. Speculation, appeal to authority and emotion, is not proof. It is faith. A guess, no more. Elaborate guess maybe, but still a guess.
Religions has many problems, but the worst are the crimes it fuels and ignores. One of these is patriarchal oppression of women in religion. Racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, transphobic and all by "enlightened" leaders. No, sorry. NO ONE truly enlightened would trip over the human body, a mere container. Rethink your idols. They might not have been as advanced as you want to believe. And wanting causes suffering, correct? 😀😀
"Pointing to the mind...". Well, technically, I can't point to where the flying spaghetti monster is either, so not being able to point to the Mind actually DOES tefute the mind. Why should anyone have to point to the Mind that you say exists? YOU point to it first. You prove it because you're the one asserting it. You can't expect people who DON'T accept your premise to do the work for you.
    Cheers!💞🙆🙏

I hv the greatest respect for Ven Ajahan Bramham. However, I feel when talking on a subject like consciousness, the quantum of jokes etc need to be reduced and content increased. From the little I know, in abidamma, consciousness is more detailed and elaborate. Hope this will contribute for the best.

Disappointed. He doesn't address the function of the brain, which processes the senses perceive, and how it relates to the mind. Isn't our thoughts generated by the brain? If the visual center of the brain is damaged, Isn't visual perception impaired? Maybe it would help if he defines his terms. He's seems to use mind and consciousness interchangeably, and seems to imply that it is immaterial, and can exist non-coporally. If it does He did not explain something immaterial can effect the physical.

Well after watching this video I am still no closer understanding what the mind is. Buddhist scholars seem to teach the mind is the sum of the five aggregates, body, feelings, perception, mental formations, consciousness. This is what we are. However all of these cease to exist at death dont they...including consciousness since it comes from the sense contacts, eye ear touch smell mind etc...so what does actually survive...or goes on. This is a contradiction I never fully understood. The problem is the Buddha himself never explained this as far as I know, he simply declined to answer what actually gets reborn if one assumes that buddhist teaching true. His answer was to paraphrase 'the process of existence continues'. His reasoning not to get too deep into what gets reborn or what continues to exist was that by obsessing about it we just prolong our suffering by continuing clinging to a 'self'-as far as I understand.

As I've understood, A 'living being' could be analysed using the "skanda, dhatu or ayatana" method
If skanda method is used the 'combination of mind and body' is explained as 5 aggregates.
Rupa is the physical matter .. vedana , sanna, sankhara and vinnana are divisions of the ' mind'.
If Ayatana method is used, the "whole" is classified into 6....Eye consciousness, ear consciousness, etc.
      Dhatu method- 18 divisions
Abhidhamma method - 3 broad divisions- citta, chetasika, Rupa.
Other places -only divided into 2 , as Nama Rupa or consciousness and form.
Sometimes simply classified as "mind and body"
So the " definition" of consciousness will depend on the context.
But always its to be taken as a continuous flow of Many combinations of components..

With respect, how can he ..any monk or any human being speak with such certainty about each and every subject. Is there no room for debate or school of thought.
And why would one person worship another person for saying a wise thing?
"Stephen Hawkings PROVED blah blah blah [Brahm quote]...And that therefore takes away the need for a God (Creator)...How can he feel he has the right or power or authority to make such absolutest claims?????? [esp. when many other equally respected or revered monks might have a different line of thought].
Still, he is engaging and says alot of positive stuff ..he is humorous but do all monks agree with all his comments or rather claims..No I don't think so.
It worries me just how many gurus, reliogious leaders and scientists etc ..are elevated to a point of having a large following largely through charisma and charm and an appearance of knowing all the answers to life ...yet are hardly never challenged.
Ajahn Brahn is one of those monks who loves to be up front talking ..and uses funny storytelling as an engagement tool. He makes some, even many good points for reflection BUT he doesn't know everything ...no one does!
No offence intended to anyone ...I've just seen too many so called 'no it all' leaders or represenatives come along who like sheep get many to blindly follow without every cross checking what they're being lead to believe.
Peace to all and to you Ajahn Brahm sir!
