Gratitude is a big key for me. I have had strokes and I walk with a cane. But there was a time I couldn't walk. So I think of how grateful I am to be able to walk at all. So I lace up, grab my cane, and walk. Here from the hurricane land of Florida.
I love the tip "If you think of a super palatable food you want to eat but remember that you know the taste, if you still want it the next day, then get it, but not then"...delayed gratification. I had heard that for shopping...but neat to apply that to food as well. Will definitely try that. I also liked that not all food have to taste super good..that would apply to most of my cooking....lol...maybe why my brain wants more palatable food!!

When I first went vegan, I ordered veggies at a Hibachi restaurant. The chef said "more veggie, more sexy" and it has become a part of my personality 😂 I loved this video!

About a year ago I remember you saying the hardest part about working out is putting on your gym shoes! That stuck with me so much I decided to make it a habit. Now every morning after I stretch and meditate, I put on my shoes and work out. Now it feels weird if I don’t put on my shoes. Thank you! I started lacing up 4 years ago when I came across the walk 1,000 miles in a year challenge. It sounds impossible but by breaking it down to 2.7 miles a day you realize it is possible! I've completed this challenge every year since. I went from being a couch potato to now walking 5 miles a day.
@@2008aa6 it's a walking challenge started by country walking magazine in the UK to get people out walking in the countryside. Where I lived is mostly urban so I'm pavement pounding with my dog. Out in all weather's. This is my 5th year of doing it, and I'm 12 miles off from my 1000! There is a lovely supportive Facebook group as well, lots of advice from everyone all over the world for beginners. I count all my steps for the day, so time wise it's how ever long it takes you. Start slowly and fitness will come within a few weeks. Hope this helps 🙋
@@lindapitchford4941 Hi Linda, it's going for a walk, I use a pedometer, but others use various other ways to find how far they have walked. I count all my steps for the day, which is 2 walks with my dog which add up to about 3 miles, then wherever else I've been.🙋
You're absolutely right! I used to work out for over 32 years, faithfully 5 to 7 days per week! Started fostering kids and gave them all my time and stopped working out. Took care of both parents now one parent and years went by with not being able to get myself back into the habit. I said I can do it for 15 minutes tried for a few days failed. 10 minutes same thing, 8 minutes same thing. Failure after failure to start a routine more than two or three times. :-( finally said I'm going to set my alarm every single day and work out for 2 minutes no matter what as if my life depends on it! And guess what, I set Alexa for 2 minutes for the first two or three days, then I did it for 3 minutes and added an extra minute or two and now 2 weeks later, doing anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes per day! 6 days a week! Feel I'm getting stronger and I'm going to slowly push myself to 14 minutes. But if I don't feel like working out, I will always say unless I'm sick, at least 2 minutes a day. Once I get my shoes on and start working out even for 2 minutes, I realize I want to do more!
My rule for mental health: it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you REACT to what happens to you. This helps the control-freak in me to deal with the fact that even if I can’t plan my way out of every problem, and can’t control some events or situations, I absolutely CAN control how I respond to them, protect and care for myself, and lessen my levels of stress and worry.
I use “Nothing taste as good as being healthy feels” and “I’m eating for sustenance not for pleasure” when I’m struggling with staying committed. I simply say one of those mantras over and over till I’m back on track. Works most of the time.

"Just show up" I say it over and over in my head. It makes it seem so simplified and causes me less anxiety. All I have to do is show up. Once I get to the gym or my workout class it's fine! You just gotta get there. Kinda like "lace up" 😊
From my experience… having more Gratitude and less judgment around food is a peaceful way of living. Maki g wise choices comes from being attentive and wise… not having judgement. I’ve made and allowed changes in my life based on some of these items… like just lacing up. Incorporation of self compassion is a vital ingredient as well.
"At your peak health and fitness, you'll have shit days too". This mindset soothes my mind. My life is a LOT better now compared to a few years ago, when regular exercise and healthy food felt like impossible endeavors. Still, I have days with anxiety and self doubt, just like before. However, seeking out that which is uncomfortable has made me see struggles as an important part of life, rather than a fault or weakness. Great video as always, thanks!
One of my favourites is "Motion is Lotion" especially when my joint pain is stopping me from doing exercise. A version I also use is "Motion is Motivation" because I feel like if I can just get off the couch and get moving i am more motivated to get stuff done.

I often encounter this limiting thought in my friends and family, that they think they can't change themselves and how they think or feel. In my experience we're mostly just a collection of memories, values and patterns. Sure we have personal characteristics and we're all unique snowflakes yes yes.... but most of "us" is actually totally modular and customizable. So go wild and build yourself the way you see fit. If you don't like parts of yourself, change them! You can be better, in every way, every day. p.s. Thanks for the uplifting video. I haven't watched your videos in a long time, but today it felt like coming back home.
"I've had that before and I know what it tastes like" this one helped me so much a few years ago when I was thinking about going vegan. I was so into cheese (so much so that when my family heard about me going vegan they all laughed and said "yeah we'll see how long that lasts!" But I just kept telling myself that I had experienced it so much why did I need it again? And it worked. As I went on my vegan journey I found things that reminded me of cheese, not in a temptation way but in a satisfying, good alternative way. Then last year I discovered a company here in England that makes vegan cheese that is not just as good as dairy cheese but better! They do the best brie, but I had been off cheese for so long that I don't need it all the time and I just indulge in an occasional treat around Christmas time. Thanks Derek, you have always been an inspiration and your advice (and especially your cooking!) has really helped me turn my life around and I will always be grateful to you!
Yes, I feel like that one is genius! I don't have to taste it 300 times when I've already tasted it once. And I'll add to that the power of thinking about doing the least harm, that's a good thing to remember when it comes to vegan junk food. Ultimately it's doing me harm, even if it's not hurting animals, and that matters.

@@Simnettnutrition I think when I heard you say it originally it was with regards to alcohol. As you said yourself though, occasional treats don't define your lifestyle! And like you said I always try to pay attention to what my body tells me about treats, but any time I drink alcohol or have fast food my stomach always seems to ask "What on earth have you just put in me!" After you've been whole food for a while your body just gets used to good fuel I guess.

The Purple Carrot in Liverpool sell their cheeses at Christmas time and I first had their brie and camembert (called shamembert I think) in a vegan restaurant in Nottingham called No.Twelve (awesome food!) The brie gets really creamy when melted and the rind is really convincing. I would highly recommend the cheese and the restaurant.
Thanks, Derek! Great tips :) I've been on a journey to release 150 pounds and I'm about halfway through. One thing that I do is I create a fitness goal, every 6 months, starting on my birthday and my half birthday. The goal is 100 + fitness days (if I work out twice in a day that still counts as one fitness day) in six months and it helps me to keep moving. I track them on my Google Calendar by the number of the workout, the type of exercise, and any details I might want to remember later, i.e. how many miles I walked. Whether I lose weight, or not, I know that I'm at least putting in the time and effort to heal my body. I've had a couple periods of good weight loss, but a lot of that time has been plateau or bouncing up and down between 225 and 235, LOL. The other benefits are huge, though. I know that I'm improving my overall health. I had a really hard time walking, four years ago, because of a low back injury. Now, I can walk up to 4.5 miles, in a day. I can swim a mile. I can dance for 2 hours, straight, where I used to have to sit down every fifteen minutes. I can stand on my feet for a couple hours, meal prepping (that also used to be really hard). I'm currently pushing myself to see how far and how long I can go, because I know that going the distance is the only thing that really makes me lose weight. I have insulin resistance, so I have to work a bit harder than most. But, that's okay, because ultimately, I know I'm creating a much healthier body (and mind), in the process.

Thanks, Derek! I appreciate that and you're welcome :) I forgot to mention that I'm also trying to keep my strength and muscle up, because my understanding is that endurance training can burn muscle. So, I'm mixing HIIT in there, too. I have a chair squats routine for my lower body, where I do ten reps and rest for 35 seconds. I've gotten up to 400 squats, per session, which takes about an hour. They're not as hard as regular squats and are more suitable for people with injuries, like myself. I was working in a store, where I had a chair and I had to keep getting up and out of it, to help customers. At first, it was really hard. But, I started to get stronger. I left the job, but started the chair squats routine, to be able to keep my strength up. At first, I could only do 100 in a session, but I've worked my way up. I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why I can walk much further, now. Also, I live in a place where there are many hills and walking uphill is particularly good for my lower back injury. For my upper body, I have a series of exercises that I do with 12 pound dumbbells, plus two kinds of sit-ups, and I just added some push-ups, the other day. Have you read Dr. Greger's "How Not to Age", yet? I'm about halfway through and he talks about how both endurance training and high intensity training can activate AMPK and actually create more fat burning capacity, as well as extend duration and quality of life...as long as there's adequate rest time. That's the hard part, LOL. A body in motion wants to stay in motion, right? I took a rest day, today, after 12 days of going hard, because I could feel that my body was stressed out. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos, even though we have different goals, because I always learn things from you and I appreciate that you've transformed your life, too. I would recommend reading both "7 habits of highly effective people" and "Atomic habits" as those books found that gave me a sold understanding about habits, why which and how to develop them.
Don’t be afraid to change something that isn’t working for you. I so badly wanted to be good at yoga for years and years bc it was supposed to be “relaxing” and “good for mental health.” And while I don’t disagree with those statements, I realized I’m much much happier in the gym lifting weights. I had to get WAY out of my comfort zone for this, but omg the mental and physical results are immaculate. And I still do casual yoga before bed to relax, but I’ve realized that it doesn’t leave me feeling as happy and fulfilled as other workouts. So try new things, and don’t be ashamed if something isn’t working for you! Just keep going and keep growing.
I feel that with Yoga. It is great for many people but I just wanted to be doing so many other things. Haha. I feel just like you at and after the gym. Way to go for lacing up and getting in there!
I will definitely be using that one about remembering how the food tastes and that you can always eat it another day! Love that. And it's so true about your taste buds changing and your cravings changing - I swear I actually WANT to eat veggies and a fresh, crunchy ,juicy,delicious salad every day - it's amazing!! Its what I say to myself before a jog, workout, any struggling situation, when I hesitate. Also when in situations that are not good for me or my children. I lost over half my body weight. and made my life healthier in so many ways. None of us are promised tomorrow, so that saying also pushes me to get done what I can everyday, and not leave it for later. As I may not have a later to apply it to. And finally.. live full, die empty. Create a full life for yourself. No one will ever put the time and effort in for you. If you want it, do something about it. Prove it to yourself. Give yourself a full life and die empty of regrets, wonder, and unexpressed dreams. Always be yourself and the best possible self (the one you can be). Love your channel. Ty for your work and dedication. You and Crystal are awesome! I've only been Vegan for 7yrs. but it's one of those things, if I only knew then what I know now. I wish I figured it out sooner, but I didn't and now I do. And I focus on what I can do now and impliment it all into my current life which is now healthier in many ways and in leaps and bounds. This was just what I needed. I’ve been struggling so bad and having zero motivation and ambition to do anything and I’ve really been stuck in a rut. The key from what you said I think is just go whether you feel like it or not just go out the door and exercise. Great advice I just love love love your channel !!!! I started going to the YMCA twice a week to start. I do cardio and reward myself with the pool after. I have been ill and have been working to recondition my body so I am pretty proud of myself. Getting back to my old self feels great!
Totally agree with the “tying up of your shoe laces”. Some small steps we do can have a big impact. Some days when I’m just staying home all day and not seeing anyone outside my family, I make no effort in how I look and that carries with me during the day, I feel flat, less motivated, likely to eat the wrong foods. On those same days at home, if I make the effort to dress nicer and maybe put on some makeup, I feel so much better, more motivated and less likely to eat the wrong foods. There’s a video on you tube from a Navy Officer who talks of making your bed when you wake up, again so true, that simple act can have an impact on how you feel and carry through with your day. I eats raw vegan ,in winter time more warm stem food but plants about 10 years now,do my green juice every day ,and it’s changed so much to me -every single step ,make big changes!! I've been somewhat of a flexitarian for a while now--trying to eat vegetarian or vegan for most meals. I've gone vegan twice before, but have not stuck with it for one reason or another. Try to really get into the animal rights part of things, what we are doing to animals is absolutely disgusting and I couldn't imagine ever contributing to that again after seeing what I've seen.
That’s what I’ve done so far and I feel like that is what will keep me going this time. I’m actually pretty excited for the holidays because I love cooking and there are so many new recipes to try.
@@koryborgia7556 also the environmental aspect too. Some of the documentaries really show this. When vegan, every meal is at least helping animals and the environment....even if it's not the perfect healthy meal. You can do it!

Nobody is pushing you, make your own diet style. I was plant based for years but got into some eggs and occassional fish. Meat is also not off the hook... I am not doing well with dogmas and mandates if you catch my drift :)
I’m a runner (marathon and ultras) and what you hear a lot from the GOATs is “love the process” because the goals will come and go but if your motivation is extrinsic and not intrinsic you’ll not only perform worse but be less happy doing it. One saying I heard that’s been a huge influence on me (maybe even came from you, I forget!) is “invest in your future self”. So when making decisions think of future you. Future me definitely is happy when I eat a bunch of croissants with my partner at a vegan bakery sometimes, but he’s also happy when that isn’t every breakfast and when I’m running 30miles a week! Identify your why! If we have a purpose behind our actions, we are more motivated to continue down the right path long-term. Having something to look forward to each day that sparks a sense of joy and accomplishment makes life worth living.
Great advice Derek. My husband says consistency is key, that’s turned into our family motto. But we abide by all the rules you mentioned (except the plain pain…) The thing that’s helped us is baby steps, we started of having a meat free Monday and are now almost entirely plant based. But I love your final rule. It’s a long game. There’s no end, it’s a way of life now. I truly hope that we inspire our children and help the environment at the same time❤❤
I'm just reviewing "Undo Itt!" by Dean Ornish and Anne Ornish for a friend, and I was interested to see that he sees 4 pillars of good health. The first two - a whole-food plant-based diet and regular exercise (particularly, I would say, cardio exercise, though strength training is also good) - are familiar, but he adds as equally important: 3. Stress management: keeping stress low by techniques such as meditation and yoga (and also, I would say, by managing stressful situations to minimize the stress); and 4. LISC: Love, Intimacy, and Social Connection. Lonely people are at serious risk for bad health outcomes, both physical and mental (depression, for example).

I have experienced long term illness and I really mean it when saying that health is absoulutely first priority in life, so I wish all people to lovingly take care of their bodies ❤️Our bodies does such a great job for us every day... I recently started using a coaching app, Copilot, and that got me doing strength workouts for the 1# time regularly, in my whole life. I started very very easy, and find that my body is craving more movement, and I am looking forward to it mostly every time. Already increasing reps and time, and other movement. I cant wait to start running! I find that I usually make better food than on average restaurants, but I enjoy of course eating out socially. But «plane»✈️food starts tasting so much when you drop msg and processed food😊 That said, its very easy to make healthy vegan food tasty af. The secret is in the sauce!

I think health can be approached so differently for so many people that I believe it comes down to knowing yourself and your body on what works for you and simply try your best on what you can. Derek's video is a good example of him knowing what works for him and his body but it's also a good example that what works for him might not work for some of us. Obviously some things are difficult for some of us, mental health is a huge factor in even getting up out of bed in the morning, able bodies have more ways and much easily access to feel or even be healthy, and when it comes to food it is unfortunate that the healthiest food and superfoods are usually the most expensive and sometimes simply inaccessible to some of us.

I’ve been preserving my own food, from fermenting veggies, brewing kombucha, making milk kefir, to baking with sourdough. I feel that everyone gets better at things by just repeating & trying. I am 100% agree with Derek. I used to be a major gourmand in eating tasty food & drinks. These days i can’t be bothered to cook 1/2 the stuff i used to eat. These day i’d be craving green beans stirfried w/ carrot seasoned w/ shallot, garlic, a pinch of salt & a dash of pepper no oil needed. Now if i eat what used to be my favorite cereal, i could taste all the chemicals & none of the great taste i expected. Hence i gave up a LOT of processed food.
Thanks for the reminder that not all our food needs to be a 10 out of 10! I love watching vegan recipe videos, but eating all those incredible recipes won't get me where I want to be!🥦

I've started running and the difference I feel in 5 weeks is amazing. Just lacing up is literally what gets me out through the front door every day, one step at a time until I start that run. Thanks Derek! This is very inspiring! I do love quotes, especially ones that create a habit! I have to tell myself most mornings “Discipline over motivation” and that helps get my workout done! I also love “In order to have what others don’t, you must do what others won’t” this helps me because it’s very easy to fall into bad habits like others around you, but this quote reminds me that I have nutrition and fitness goals that most people don’t. I can’t let others’ lack of motivation influence my progress. It’s not for them, it’s for me and my family.
The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come. I’ve loved that quote for years, helps me keep perspective on this journey called life!

The saying I always say to keep me motivated is ‘doing something is better than doing nothing’ it usually at least helps me start something which In turn gives me a better chance at achieving!

About a year ago I remember you saying the hardest part about working out is putting on your gym shoes! That stuck with me so much I decided to make it a habit. Now every morning after I stretch and meditate, I put on my shoes and work out. Now it feels weird if I don’t put on my shoes. Thank you!

I don't remember who said it, but whenever I want to fall back into an old habit, I say this out loud to myself: "Don't give up what you want most, for what you want right now."
I started lacing up 4 years ago when I came across the walk 1,000 miles in a year challenge. It sounds impossible but by breaking it down to 2.7 miles a day you realize it is possible! I've completed this challenge every year since. I went from being a couch potato to now walking 5 miles a day.
Great idea! Do you count steps...or do you count actually going for a walk?
Can you give more details please? Do you walk on a treadmill or go out? How long does it take you? Coach potato here need some ideas.
@@2008aa6 it's a walking challenge started by country walking magazine in the UK to get people out walking in the countryside. Where I lived is mostly urban so I'm pavement pounding with my dog. Out in all weather's. This is my 5th year of doing it, and I'm 12 miles off from my 1000! There is a lovely supportive Facebook group as well, lots of advice from everyone all over the world for beginners. I count all my steps for the day, so time wise it's how ever long it takes you. Start slowly and fitness will come within a few weeks. Hope this helps 🙋

You're absolutely right! I used to work out for over 32 years, faithfully 5 to 7 days per week! Started fostering kids and gave them all my time and stopped working out. Took care of both parents now one parent and years went by with not being able to get myself back into the habit. I said I can do it for 15 minutes tried for a few days failed. 10 minutes same thing, 8 minutes same thing. Failure after failure to start a routine more than two or three times. :-( finally said I'm going to set my alarm every single day and work out for 2 minutes no matter what as if my life depends on it! And guess what, I set Alexa for 2 minutes for the first two or three days, then I did it for 3 minutes and added an extra minute or two and now 2 weeks later, doing anywhere from 8 to 12 minutes per day! 6 days a week! Feel I'm getting stronger and I'm going to slowly push myself to 14 minutes. But if I don't feel like working out, I will always say unless I'm sick, at least 2 minutes a day. Once I get my shoes on and start working out even for 2 minutes, I realize I want to do more!

My rule for mental health: it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you REACT to what happens to you. This helps the control-freak in me to deal with the fact that even if I can’t plan my way out of every problem, and can’t control some events or situations, I absolutely CAN control how I respond to them, protect and care for myself, and lessen my levels of stress and worry.

From my experience… having more Gratitude and less judgment around food is a peaceful way of living. Maki g wise choices comes from being attentive and wise… not having judgement. I’ve made and allowed changes in my life based on some of these items… like just lacing up. Incorporation of self compassion is a vital ingredient as well.
"At your peak health and fitness, you'll have shit days too". This mindset soothes my mind. My life is a LOT better now compared to a few years ago, when regular exercise and healthy food felt like impossible endeavors. Still, I have days with anxiety and self doubt, just like before. However, seeking out that which is uncomfortable has made me see struggles as an important part of life, rather than a fault or weakness. Great video as always, thanks!

One of my favourites is "Motion is Lotion" especially when my joint pain is stopping me from doing exercise. A version I also use is "Motion is Motivation" because I feel like if I can just get off the couch and get moving i am more motivated to get stuff done.

I often encounter this limiting thought in my friends and family, that they think they can't change themselves and how they think or feel. In my experience we're mostly just a collection of memories, values and patterns. Sure we have personal characteristics and we're all unique snowflakes yes yes.... but most of "us" is actually totally modular and customizable.
So go wild and build yourself the way you see fit. If you don't like parts of yourself, change them!
You can be better, in every way, every day.

"I've had that before and I know what it tastes like" this one helped me so much a few years ago when I was thinking about going vegan. I was so into cheese (so much so that when my family heard about me going vegan they all laughed and said "yeah we'll see how long that lasts!" But I just kept telling myself that I had experienced it so much why did I need it again? And it worked. As I went on my vegan journey I found things that reminded me of cheese, not in a temptation way but in a satisfying, good alternative way. Then last year I discovered a company here in England that makes vegan cheese that is not just as good as dairy cheese but better! They do the best brie, but I had been off cheese for so long that I don't need it all the time and I just indulge in an occasional treat around Christmas time. Thanks Derek, you have always been an inspiration and your advice (and especially your cooking!) has really helped me turn my life around and I will always be grateful to you!
Yes, I feel like that one is genius! I don't have to taste it 300 times when I've already tasted it once. And I'll add to that the power of thinking about doing the least harm, that's a good thing to remember when it comes to vegan junk food. Ultimately it's doing me harm, even if it's not hurting animals, and that matters.

@@Simnettnutrition I think when I heard you say it originally it was with regards to alcohol. As you said yourself though, occasional treats don't define your lifestyle! And like you said I always try to pay attention to what my body tells me about treats, but any time I drink alcohol or have fast food my stomach always seems to ask "What on earth have you just put in me!" After you've been whole food for a while your body just gets used to good fuel I guess.

The Purple Carrot in Liverpool sell their cheeses at Christmas time and I first had their brie and camembert (called shamembert I think) in a vegan restaurant in Nottingham called No.Twelve (awesome food!) The brie gets really creamy when melted and the rind is really convincing. I would highly recommend the cheese and the restaurant.

Thanks, Derek! Great tips :) I've been on a journey to release 150 pounds and I'm about halfway through. One thing that I do is I create a fitness goal, every 6 months, starting on my birthday and my half birthday. The goal is 100 + fitness days (if I work out twice in a day that still counts as one fitness day) in six months and it helps me to keep moving. I track them on my Google Calendar by the number of the workout, the type of exercise, and any details I might want to remember later, i.e. how many miles I walked. Whether I lose weight, or not, I know that I'm at least putting in the time and effort to heal my body. I've had a couple periods of good weight loss, but a lot of that time has been plateau or bouncing up and down between 225 and 235, LOL. The other benefits are huge, though. I know that I'm improving my overall health. I had a really hard time walking, four years ago, because of a low back injury. Now, I can walk up to 4.5 miles, in a day. I can swim a mile. I can dance for 2 hours, straight, where I used to have to sit down every fifteen minutes. I can stand on my feet for a couple hours, meal prepping (that also used to be really hard). I'm currently pushing myself to see how far and how long I can go, because I know that going the distance is the only thing that really makes me lose weight. I have insulin resistance, so I have to work a bit harder than most. But, that's okay, because ultimately, I know I'm creating a much healthier body (and mind), in the process.

Thanks, Derek! I appreciate that and you're welcome :) I forgot to mention that I'm also trying to keep my strength and muscle up, because my understanding is that endurance training can burn muscle. So, I'm mixing HIIT in there, too. I have a chair squats routine for my lower body, where I do ten reps and rest for 35 seconds. I've gotten up to 400 squats, per session, which takes about an hour. They're not as hard as regular squats and are more suitable for people with injuries, like myself. I was working in a store, where I had a chair and I had to keep getting up and out of it, to help customers. At first, it was really hard. But, I started to get stronger. I left the job, but started the chair squats routine, to be able to keep my strength up. At first, I could only do 100 in a session, but I've worked my way up. I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why I can walk much further, now. Also, I live in a place where there are many hills and walking uphill is particularly good for my lower back injury. For my upper body, I have a series of exercises that I do with 12 pound dumbbells, plus two kinds of sit-ups, and I just added some push-ups, the other day. Have you read Dr. Greger's "How Not to Age", yet? I'm about halfway through and he talks about how both endurance training and high intensity training can activate AMPK and actually create more fat burning capacity, as well as extend duration and quality of life...as long as there's adequate rest time. That's the hard part, LOL. A body in motion wants to stay in motion, right? I took a rest day, today, after 12 days of going hard, because I could feel that my body was stressed out. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos, even though we have different goals, because I always learn things from you and I appreciate that you've transformed your life, too. Don’t be afraid to change something that isn’t working for you. I so badly wanted to be good at yoga for years and years bc it was supposed to be “relaxing” and “good for mental health.” And while I don’t disagree with those statements, I realized I’m much much happier in the gym lifting weights. I had to get WAY out of my comfort zone for this, but omg the mental and physical results are immaculate. And I still do casual yoga before bed to relax, but I’ve realized that it doesn’t leave me feeling as happy and fulfilled as other workouts. So try new things, and don’t be ashamed if something isn’t working for you! Just keep going and keep growing.
I feel that with Yoga. It is great for many people but I just wanted to be doing so many other things. Haha. I feel just like you at and after the gym. Way to go for lacing up and getting in there!

Also when in situations that are not good for me or my children. I lost over half my body weight. and made my life healthier in so many ways. None of us are promised tomorrow, so that saying also pushes me to get done what I can everyday, and not leave it for later. As I may not have a later to apply it to. And finally.. live full, die empty. Create a full life for yourself. No one will ever put the time and effort in for you. If you want it, do something about it. Prove it to yourself. Give yourself a full life and die empty of regrets, wonder, and unexpressed dreams. Always be yourself and the best possible self (the one you can be).

I started going to the YMCA twice a week to start. I do cardio and reward myself with the pool after. I have been ill and have been working to recondition my body so I am pretty proud of myself. Getting back to my old self feels great!
Totally agree with the “tying up of your shoe laces”. Some small steps we do can have a big impact. Some days when I’m just staying home all day and not seeing anyone outside my family, I make no effort in how I look and that carries with me during the day, I feel flat, less motivated, likely to eat the wrong foods. On those same days at home, if I make the effort to dress nicer and maybe put on some makeup, I feel so much better, more motivated and less likely to eat the wrong foods. There’s a video on you tube from a Navy Officer who talks of making your bed when you wake up, again so true, that simple act can have an impact on how you feel and carry through with your day. Love your video content ♥️

I've been somewhat of a flexitarian for a while now--trying to eat vegetarian or vegan for most meals. I've gone vegan twice before, but have not stuck with it for one reason or another. Try to really get into the animal rights part of things, what we are doing to animals is absolutely disgusting and I couldn't imagine ever contributing to that again after seeing what I've seen.
That’s what I’ve done so far and I feel like that is what will keep me going this time. I’m actually pretty excited for the holidays because I love cooking and there are so many new recipes to try.

Nobody is pushing you, make your own diet style. I was plant based for years but got into some eggs and occassional fish. Meat is also not off the hook... I am not doing well with dogmas and mandates if you catch my drift :)

I’m a runner (marathon and ultras) and what you hear a lot from the GOATs is “love the process” because the goals will come and go but if your motivation is extrinsic and not intrinsic you’ll not only perform worse but be less happy doing it. One saying I heard that’s been a huge influence on me (maybe even came from you, I forget!) is “invest in your future self”. So when making decisions think of future you. Future me definitely is happy when I eat a bunch of croissants with my partner at a vegan bakery sometimes, but he’s also happy when that isn’t every breakfast and when I’m running 30miles a week! Thanks again for the videos! ❤
Identify your why! If we have a purpose behind our actions, we are more motivated to continue down the right path long-term. Having something to look forward to each day that sparks a sense of joy and accomplishment makes life worth living.

The thing that’s helped us is baby steps, we started of having a meat free Monday and are now almost entirely plant based. But I love your final rule. It’s a long game. There’s no end, it’s a way of life now. I truly hope that we inspire our children and help the environment at the same time❤❤

I'm just reviewing "Undo Itt!" by Dean Ornish and Anne Ornish for a friend, and I was interested to see that he sees 4 pillars of good health. The first two - a whole-food plant-based diet and regular exercise (particularly, I would say, cardio exercise, though strength training is also good) - are familiar, but he adds as equally important: 3. Stress management: keeping stress low by techniques such as meditation and yoga (and also, I would say, by managing stressful situations to minimize the stress); and 4. LISC: Love, Intimacy, and Social Connection. Lonely people are at serious risk for bad health outcomes, both physical and mental (depression, for example).
I’ve already shared this with three other people, and we ALL need this - THANKS! (did you mean plain plain fresh fresh?)

I have experienced long term illness and I really mean it when saying that health is absoulutely first priority in life, so I wish all people to lovingly take care of their bodies ❤️Our bodies does such a great job for us every day...
I recently started using a coaching app, Copilot, and that got me doing strength workouts for the 1# time regularly, in my whole life. I started very very easy, and find that my body is craving more movement, and I am looking forward to it mostly every time. Already increasing reps and time, and other movement. I cant wait to start running!
I find that I usually make better food than on average restaurants, but I enjoy of course eating out socially. But «plane»✈️food starts tasting so much when you drop msg and processed food😊 That said, its very easy to make healthy vegan food tasty af. The secret is in the sauce!

I think health can be approached so differently for so many people that I believe it comes down to knowing yourself and your body on what works for you and simply try your best on what you can.
Derek's video is a good example of him knowing what works for him and his body but it's also a good example that what works for him might not work for some of us.
Obviously some things are difficult for some of us, mental health is a huge factor in even getting up out of bed in the morning, able bodies have more ways and much easily access to feel or even be healthy, and when it comes to food it is unfortunate that the healthiest food and superfoods are usually the most expensive and sometimes simply inaccessible to some of us.
Great attitude & inspiration! Recommended from Adelina, myTinyhouse, TH-cam. I’m in my 7th decade, very healthy but look for inspiration every day to learn & do new things. I’ve been preserving my own food, from fermenting veggies, brewing kombucha, making milk kefir, to baking with sourdough. I feel that everyone gets better at things by just repeating & trying. I am 100% agree with Derek. I used to be a major gourmand in eating tasty food & drinks. These days i can’t be bothered to cook 1/2 the stuff i used to eat. These day i’d be craving green beans stirfried w/ carrot seasoned w/ shallot, garlic, a pinch of salt & a dash of pepper no oil needed. Now if i eat what used to be my favorite cereal, i could taste all the chemicals & none of the great taste i expected. Hence i gave up a LOT of processed food.

I also love “In order to have what others don’t, you must do what others won’t” this helps me because it’s very easy to fall into bad habits like others around you, but this quote reminds me that I have nutrition and fitness goals that most people don’t. I can’t let others’ lack of motivation influence my progress. It’s not for them, it’s for me and my family.
The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.
I’ve loved that quote for years, helps me keep perspective on this journey called life!

'Consistency is Key' is one that helps me. But I also agree with you that it's what you do the majority of the time that counts. You don't have to be 'perfect' every single day.

The saying I always say to keep me motivated is ‘doing something is better than doing nothing’ it usually at least helps me start something which In turn gives me a better chance at achieving!

The point about food not having to taste great every time because it's meant to be nourishment, not indulgement... It's so relevant yet explain this to anyone outside the fitness community and they are effing weirded out and think you're crazy for suggesting it.
