And the song is actually about a "working girl" at the "Moulin Rouge" and the man who visits her and then cannot forget her when he goes back home.
It turns out that what seems to be an iconic French phrase was actually popularized by foreign speakers.
In 1921, American writer John Dos Passos used it in his book Three Soldiers, albeit deliberately misspelled and minus the ce soir. This is the first recorded use of the phrase. Not long after, E.E. Cummings (one of my favorite poets, for what it’s worth), included the phrase Voulez-vous coucher avec moi in his poem “Little Ladies”. It was also used in Tennessee Williams’s famous 1947 play “A Streetcar Named Desire”, this time with ce soir added.
A few decades later, it soared to popularity thanks to disco! In 1974, the Patti LaBelle-fronted group Labelle released the ultra-catchy “Lady Marmalade”, a song about a New Orleans prostitute who says the now-famous line. {..} A native French speaker would probably never say “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?”!
That’s because, although it’s grammatically correct, the use of vous, the formal form of “you”, with an invitation to such an intimate act is jarring to most French people. But, the sentiment is on point. This was the EPITOME of musical star power at the time of its release. Sadly, you don’t hear too much out of any of them today other than Pink. Even given that, she’s still horribly underrated. She’s a badass writer, vocalist (sounds even better now than she did then), performer, and mom.

It was their biggest Hit Record. What a History they had. They started out as Patti Labelle & The Blue Belles in the late 1950's. Then in 1963 they "Met" The Supremes who were part of the Motortown Revue Toru and everyone talked about how much Florence Ballard (1943-1976) and Cindy Birdsong looked alike. They couldn't get any Major Hits but they did work with Murry The K Kaufman when they did their version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Man Of La Mancha and did Where The Action Is (An Outdoor Version Of American Bandstand). In 1967 Cindy leaves to join The Supremes after Florence Ballard got fired and doesn't tell her former partners directly. They along with other R & B Acts do Shows in Europe where they meet a Piano Player named Reginald Kenneth Stanley Dwight aka Elton John. This song was also Co Written by Bob Crewe of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

Those were their best albums.

True funny story . This song came out when I was 17 for the movie Moulin Rouge and was a huge hit. It was originally sang by Patti Lebelle in the 70's. Anyway my dad's parents were French Immigrants and so I learned at an early age to speak French in front of my grandparents (My granddad's English was really good but grandmother no matter how hard she tried just could never really get a good grasp of it) . This song was on the radio my friends were over and singing at the top of their lungs. My grandmother happened to be there too and heard. She pulled me aside and said "Chérie, savent-ils que les mots qu'ils chantent" which means Sweetheart do they know the words they are singing" I replied"Non grand-mère, laissez-les en profiter, ils s'amusent juste "No Granny, just let them enjoy it they are just having fun LOL.

I was in high school when this came out and these were 4 of the top female artists. I was a huge Mya fan, Pink and Little Kim are just amazing also and Christina has the pipes. The song Ladies Night by Lil Kim is another song the futures some of the best female artists at the time.

I even have an old soul for older music like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton and I love 90's country better than todays country music even though I still like some of it.
And I love Metallica and Alice n Chains and Pearl Jam and Gunz n Roses, Aerosmith and Jon Bon Jovi, the list goes on and on...
But I was also into pop boy bands like New Kids on the Block, The Backstreet Boys and N'Sync.
But Backstreet Boys had the best songs I think and the some of the coolest videos and awesome dance moves. N'Sync were also know for their awesome choreography.
But I remember when they were all brand new and I saw there music videos release for the first time on TRL MTV.
Back in the day when some tweens back then did not have the internet like some young kids do today. Not to mention that we did not have youtube either.
We had to watch music videos on TRL MTV and pop up video. And watch live award shows and see it once and miss it and never see it again until later when youtube cane out which was a huge blessing.
Im in my mid 30's. Just 5 years younger than Britney. It amazes me that these young 20 something kiddos dont even know of some of these legendary singers.
That made quite an impact in the music world.
Pink and Christina are still known cause they have stayed more in the public eye.
Especially Christina being one of the The Voice Judges.
Kind of like how Mel B the singer from Spice Girls was on Americas Got Talent as a judge.
Some younger viewers have no idea of these peoples past time careers and how truly talented they are. They may look them up later and learn about them. Thwy would be suprised about how much talent we had back in the day that should not ever be forgotten.
You should watch the movie this song is based off of starring Nicole Kidman.
They sing this song in the movie as well. And Nicole Kidman blew us away with her singing voice.
She is truly talented. Not only can she act but she can sing like an angel.
You seriously need to get into each of these artists individually, especially Mya- she gets overlooked a lot. Try My Love Is Like Whoa or Fallen by her. She's a crazy talented singer and dancer. She also has a song with Sisqo (the guy from the Thong Song) called All About Me that was everything when it came out.
So underrated... she’s amazing and a beautiful person
This was so huge when it came out. I mean, it still is, but bringing five super talented ladies together was almost too much to handle.
Jay, you MUST check out Pink's live performance of "Glitter in the Air" from the Grammy's and "Beautiful Trauma" from the Las Vegas AMA's. They will knock you off your chair, I promise!

The tone and energy changes when Christina starts singing because she's simply in a different league. And the others aren't exactly slouches. But Christina is just surreally good.
I don't know man, Pink is pretty fucking amazing, and I'm not even a fan of Pink! Her genre and style of music aren't my taste and I just can't get into it, but she has one of my favorite voices in pop! Check out "You Get My Love" or her live performance of "Glitter in the Air" (I think it was at the Grammys) and you can really hear her capabilities!
