    The Little Mermaid actually has a beautiful message if you know where to look for it. The character growth doesn’t happen to Ariel- she starts the film out fully actualized; she knows what she wants and she gets it. The story is really about King Triton and how he needed to learn to leave his prejudices behind and embrace his daughter for who she truly is. Triton started the film out as hateful and bigoted towards humans, and because of this he alienated his daughter, eventually gave up his personhood to Ursula in an attempt to save his daughter, and then he finally was able to see things from Ariel’s point of view and accept her wish to become human. Sometimes parents can’t see who their children really are inside because they’re blinded by the image of who they want their children to be. I would say that’s a pretty good message!

      I'd like to add this to your narrative: In Ariel's Beginning, Triton's wife, Athena, (who looked exactly like Ariel) loved music and so did the whole royal family and the kingdom. But after Queen Athena was killed by human pirates when Ariel and all her sisters were little, Triton banned all music. Triton also got an advisor, Marina DelRey, who secretly tried to manipulate the still-heartbroken Triton into letting her take over the throne, like Yzma from The Emperor's New Groove.
      Years later, Ariel got punished by Triton for sneaking out and while she was cleaning barnacles off some rocks, she met Flounder, who was using the barnacles as a musical instrument. She had forgotten what music sounded like so when she approached him fascinated by his tune, she startled him and he rushed away to an underground music club, so she followed him and joined it. She later secretly brought her sisters to a party at the club, but they got busted and shut down by Marina and locked in the castle again, with Flounder and the bandmembers imprisoned in the dungeon.
      Ariel was the one who escaped her room, rebelled against her dad and brought music back, while helping to defeat Marina (who ended up in prison.) After Triton embraced music again, Ariel and her sisters put on the routine concerts you see Ariel not show up for at the beginning of The Little Mermaid. Ariel never stopped being rebellious and her curiosity has always gotten her in trouble, and yet helped people see the good in things they thought were bad.

      Why would they fuck up the message in the 2023 remake? I have no idea.

  • @emiwarble
    @emiwarble 2 ปีที่แล้ว +462

    I'd argue that the message of the movie is what Sebastian said: "children ought to be free to live their own lives." Ariel could have avoided all that trouble and strife if her father wasn't so violent and overbearing with his worrying about her (he worried about her for good reason, but he displayed that in literally all the wrong ways lmao).
    I think a 16 year old going off and getting married is an extreme example, but if Triton was more supportive of Ariel's passion (the human world) I don't think this movie would've even happened. I don't think she would've married Eric- maybe just kept stalking him and observing him- because Ursala's the one who made marriage a reality for Ariel. So, I say the message of the movie is to allow your children to live their own lives and explore their passions

    • @scream2816
      @scream2816 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      Tritons violence while destroying her stuff was just a catalyst for Ariel to make her deal with Ursula and throw everything away for what she loved. Yes she made mistakes but in the end she learned from them and the bond with her father was fixed

      It's also very meaningful that the last line of the movie is "I love you, Daddy." The relationship between parent and child is reconciled, and only now can there be a truly happy ending.

    When I was little, Ariel looked like an adult to me. Now when I hear her say "I'm 16 years old! I'm not a child!" My 20-year-old self is thinking "Hunny, please. I wish *I* didn't feel like a child half the time when people expect me to act like an adult just because I'm over 18. Enjoy your youth, live your life a little more, and don't get married at 16!"

    • @ma.2089
      @ma.2089 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    • @aliyahpulido953
      @aliyahpulido953 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@ma.2089 Maybe not... but at the same time, the movie doesn't specifically say how much time passed between Triton turning Ariel back into a human and her wedding. It happened in one match-cut (transition) from Eric spinning her on the beach right after her re-transformation in the sparkly dress, straight to her wedding, which makes me think we're supposed to infer that she was married right after.
      ALSO: keep in mind that Snow White had her Happily Ever After wedding at 14 years old and Prince Florian was 30 (GROSS), Jasmine was supposed to get married by her "next birthday," when she would turn 16; Aladdin himself is 18. Aurora got married to Prince Phillip when she was 16 and he was 20 (EWWWwwww). Cinderella was 19 and Prince Henri was 21, so not as bad. Tiana was in her early 20s or 19, Prince Naveen was 21, and Rapunzel was 18 while Eugene/Flynn is 27... (ughhh). Ariel is supposed to be 16 and Eric is about 18. Pretty young, but not the youngest in the Disney lineup and certainly not the biggest age gap (looking at you, Snow White and Rapunzel.)
      The earlier the Disney movie was made, the younger the princess was when she was married. Ariel's wedding at 16 was COMMON back then, as they weren't over 18 at their wedding. The more time has passed, the older the princess has been when she was married. Princess, now Queen, Anna is the oldest to be engaged at 21 years old. She was 18 in the first movie when Kristoff, at 21, became her boyfriend, and he proposed 3 years later when she was 21 and he was 24. Unrelated, but Elsa is Kristoff's age too. Hans was 23 when he met Anna in the first movie, which makes him 26 now.

    I think people miss the main lesson of TLM. Ariel had a dream like most of us do, but she got so caught up in trying to achieve it that she ended up making unwise decisions. The reason I love TLM is that it shows not everyone will support or understand your dreams/ aspirations ( i.e. Sebastian w/ grass ain't greener song and her father banning any interactions with humans). TLM shows how these negative opinions and lack of support held by a parent/ community that make a person feel more isolated and vulnerable to manipulation by others. (in ariel's case, ursula)

    • @teddypeony185
      @teddypeony185 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well, actually, the original Little Mermaid is an LGBTQ story. H.C Andersen, the author, is Little mermaid since he felt he didn't fit into society when he wrote the story in 1800. He fell in love with a man (the prince), who was engaged to a woman = a princess. In the story, TLM had her voice and tongue taken, and she was in pain every time she walked on her legs, which hints at how the author felt. When he wrote TLM, there had been another author who had written that Mermaid didn't have souls, but H.C Andersen wanted her to have a soul, so that's why he had her sacrifice herself to justify that she could have a soul.

Flipping through the pages of a book. She wants to learn how to read. She wants to know everything she doesn't already know. Arial would be ecstatic for the chance to go to school. She would be the kind of student that would be enthusiastic for every subject, even geography. Especially geography, because that's the thing she would know the least about.

    This movie is great when you realise that the main character is Triton, as he is the one who goes through a character arc overcoming his bigotry against humans.
    Ariel doesn’t really want change as a character and gets exactly what she wants by the end. She doesn’t come to any deeper realisation, any sense of sacrifice or a new way of balancing what she wanted before with what she’s learnt… but Triton did, as he learnt that Ariel - and presumably his other daughters too lol - were the most important thing and what he was doing was only driving them away, so he had to change and sacrifice Ariel’s constant presence to give her what she wanted.
    He disappears halfway through the story, but it is still unmistakably his movie.

    • @alliemarie670
      @alliemarie670 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      This is a great point! It's also further established in the prequel, Ariel's Beginning, because Triton goes through a change there, too. He hated and banned music because of his wife Athena's death, and Ariel helped him learn to cherish her memory while appreciating the value of music - because to do so would be to cherish her memory, because she loved music :)

    Ariel is just a teen who is fascinated with another world, many ppl have dreams like that, to be in a better or different place than where they are. King triton did have good intentions with keeping his family safe but he went about it in the wrong way. Ariel is naive but not brainless, she wasn’t gonna leave just like that until he destroyed the last of what made her happy about her life. She also just had a crush on a prince and wanted to get with him, she didn’t leave bc of him but bc she’s an explorer and wants to learn about something she’s interested in. Yes some humans can be bad but not all, it depends on who u meet and its not like her world is all sunshine and rainbows either. Ariel may be a princess but that doesn’t automatically make her happy or completely satisfied with her life, she clearly wants more for her than what her father wants from her. Ariel is also being emotionally manipulated and taken advantage of by Ursula, luv her tho. She was in a dark state of anger and sadness when she lost her stuff, then Ursula made her move and took advantage of a 16 yr old girl in a vulnerable state.

    I have to disagree with something about Ariel being greedy. Ariel always had a fascination with humans. She collects, she gets informed by Scuttle. That's why the song is called "part of THAT WORLD"in the beginning. Even in the original story, the mermaid's sister go up on land and her grandmother tells her human stories. So it's already been in her head that she wants it so bad. Eric is just the final nail on your fish tail coffin. Note how in the reprise changes to part of THAT WORLD, to Part of YOUR WORLD (she wants to be a part of eric 's world)
    Think about it, you learn about it, you collect it. You love him, you finally have a solid reason to want legsYour dad won't listen to you and destroys the things you love over it. You can't reason with him. Your sisters won't understand. Your dad destroyed everything you've cherished. You're heartbroken. Of course, you are going to go to the witch to get "help". 3 days or I'll belong to you. OK at least it's better than dealing with my dad who just destroyed my treasures. And at this point, take my voice to, because at this point of the movie, all she wants is out because of her dad.

    Disney's Little Mermaid actually has many lessons or morals. The most obvious is to fight for your dreams and to be true to who you are. Ariel wasn't selfish for wanting to be human, her story is a metaphor for the people who don't really belong in the community they live in, whether because of their personality, their ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender or religion. She feels uncomfortable in her own body, and is trying to be part of a community where she fits, there's nothing wrong with that. So falling in love with Eric only increases her drive to be human even more. Plus Eric is a great human being.
    At the same time, the movie teaches kids about the danger of trusting shady people. Even though you have to fight for your dreams, you have to watch out of the people who might exploit your vulnerability, like Ursula did.
    Lastly, the message that is often overlooked is for parents to listen to their children and to let them be free to live their own lives. Ariel may be the protagonist, but it's Triton who grows the most, because he had to learn that Ariel has a right to choose the life she wants for herself. Being overprotective and overbearing eventually backfires, as the film shows. Ariel wanting to be human is also a metaphor for sexual development: Ariel is half fish, which means she's neither a child nor an adult yet. She wants to grow up, but Triton keeps stifling her because he doesn't want her to grow up too fast (basically keeping her in her fish/child form), and falling in love with Eric is the drive that will push Ariel into womanhood.

    Ursela kinda duped herself. If her eels had let Eric kiss Ariel she would've won because Eric hadn't yet given up the girl with the voice for our mute Ariel who showed alot of personality despite not speaking.
    It's kinda funny how Ariel was all for being on land but seeing a hot man and Ursula using a young girls emotions made it her main selling point, eventhough getting the guy was more like a perk cuz teenage crush 😂

    "Imagine if Ursula was Ariel's mom"
    In the original draft of the script, Ursula was actually her aunt. She was King Triton's sister and that's why she used to live in the palace, but they cut that plot point for time. They put it back in for the stage version though 😀
    "What's the difference between Neptune and Triton?"
    Neptune is the Roman name for Poseidon, and in the version in which Ursula and Triton are siblings, Poseidon is their father.

    If you watch the making of the little mermaid movie they do talk about how the lesson or what u can take away from it is really with triton learning he can’t control Ariel and has to let her go for her to be happy, like the father daughter relationship or sumn. They told a story about how a man who had a bad relationship with his daughter watched this movie and was inspired to amend his rs with her again. It’s cute ig and when I was little it made me emotional when she hugged him and said I love u/saying good bye.

    The message: Children got to be free to lead their own lives.
    We have to remember that Ariel did live in a time era that 16 is considered as an adult. This may have to do with the fact that people didn't live that long back in the day, and when you turn 16, it's like 18 in modern standards.
    This is the context that they didn't really put in the lines. In today's world, people won't keep asking you to get married when you're 18 years old, that means this movie have certain contexts that doesn't fit with the modern idea because of the time setting, and that's the reason why Grimsby is constantly talking to Eric about his marriage, since Eric is 18, I would say he may just hear Grimsby talk about the topic for 2 years.
    More than one thing lead to her decision of making a deal with Ursula and going on land, first of all, she wanted to see it for herself, and then again, she didn't agree with Triton's negative view on humans but he didn't listen to her and she never get her words out before he decided not to find a way with her. And then he destroyed everything that she deemed as valuable. Ariel's mom died when a ship hit her, but that's more of an accident than deliberately killing Ariel's mother Athena, which is something that Ariel didn't remember.
    Triton wants the best for Ariel, we can see that, but he went about it the wrong way before he can see the good in humans because before the end, when he talked to Ariel, it's him who do most of the talking, but he never calm himself down to listen what Ariel wanted to say. That's not really communication.
    Prince Eric may be the final push she needs to just find a way to become human that quickly, everything she has seen from the human world build up to a breaking point.
    I feel like some parents is like Triton though, some parents will be so protective that they never let their children go out there, make mistakes and learn something new because their knowledge of the real world may also be limited too, the first time Triton see humans was that accident, and that's why he held on to this idea that ALL humans are evil when we know that's not the truth. There's all kinds of people out there, but because of that accident, Triton assume the worst when he didn't have to.
    The reason why Triton is so protective of Ariel was because how much Ariel is like her mother, but at the end he sees that if Ariel is chained to live in the sea forever, she would be miserable forever. And Eric did risked his life just to save Ariel because how much he loves her. I think after everything that had happened, Triton had come to a place of understanding and respected Eric for what he did just for Ariel too.

    People already made a point with lesson being more for parents, agreed. Also for me, personally, I just relate to Ariel, major daddy issues, quite toxic household (Triton has anger issues and can’t understand his daughter let’s be real) and it made her my favorite princess. Plus, even without the Eric she’d still be rocking it in human world, she’s ambitious and I believe she’ll be able to find a job, be good at it, to explore the world and still be positive, definitely won’t be that naive, just more mature.
    Also, this damn movie, is one of the reasons why I have a high standard for men, no wonder I’m single, Eric is cool and sweet and just a good guy who just wants to fall in love. As for Ursula, well, rewatching this movie at 14 made me question things, if you know what I mean
    Sorry for rant, I love this movie, it’s my favorite, I’m biased, not denying. Watched it like 1000 times already and still not tired of it, can write a 10k words (if not more) essay on this movie

    According to Google this is a meaning of Little Mermaid:
    “It's a mythological story that symbolises the initiation of females into the world of men when the father is absent. Mythological stories are maps of the brain and teaches how one should behave in life in order to get what one wants. In The Little Mermaid it is the quest for true love.”
    never really thought about it myself

    Your right she had a skewed idea of the world. She pedistulize the world above because she was barred from it so she idealized it until it became her untouchable utopia.
    I did the same thing when I was told to first tell my mother I will never see her again and then I cemented the pedistule when I was told never to breath her name.
    I developed a skewed idea of her because I was barred from expressing my memories of her 😅 it's unfortunate but if children are not exposed to the tarnish they will never know how to handle it on their own.

This is a story of a teen with her teen ideals being put into an adult world. Luckily it worked but you have the Dad trying to over protect to the point she rebels and the Ursula who takes advantage of her naive nature and her want to rebel. Plus the love interest cause your first love is always the “forever” love and so intense am I right?
