Just broke my oath, if you have the subclass of vegeance and after fighting the hag it pops a dialogue and you intimidate her ( no spoilers ), pass that and BOOM just lost my oath D:
For anyone that's confused about breaking your oath as a paladin, it's not random, it depends on the oath you've taken during character creation. For example, if you pick "Oath of Vengeance", then that means your Oath makes you so driven towards bringing justice to those who deserve it, and if you don't it will break (freeing the goblin Saaza or whatever will break your oath because it means she didn't end up being judged for her actions). Oath of the Ancients basically means you need to be kind and helpful (so just kill someone, i.e. the tieflings holding Laezel). Oath of Devotion is the basic "good boy" paladin, literally do anything remotely bad and it will be broken (stealing is the easiest). Hope this helps.
I played as a Devotion paladin, and after completing the 'Punish the Wicked' quest, I instantly broke my oath. But why is that considered oath-breaking, given that it had the dialogue option for the Oath of Devotion to help and be the judge? 😅
For those who want to break the oath earlier: I broke my oath right after landing by helping Lae'zel out from the cage. I told the tieflings to shoot it down and turned my sword to them.

Examples of this include betraying the Tieflings when rescuing Lae'zel" >>> Only doing this was enough for me for break my oath of devotion.
I got half way to Lv5 before breaking my Oath as a Dark Urge Oath of Vengeance. It's fairly easy to avoid breaking your Oath even as a Dark Urge. Folks just need to think about their actions instead of looking at the immediate response. Only reason I broke my Oath is because I figured the Dark Urge inner thought would let me come to my senses and back out of betraying the location of the Grove but I was locked in until I broke my Oath and could back out at that point. Didn't want to save scum, will know in the future.
The Darkness spell, from level 5, it’s a race spell, not a class spell. There are some “hidden” spells for most races(maybe all races). For example tieflings get different spells at lvl 3 and 5, depending on their subrace
@@WanderingRagabond Not sure mate but the wording on the spell would lead me to believe it doesn't work as it says weapons and the Zombie, Ghouls etc... all are unarmed. I don't believe you can give them weapons :( Sorry i hope that didn't ruin your hope for the build
If u really want to maximize this build you go to level 7 pally with the STR build then respec at level 8 switching to a Charisma build. Take 5 pally, 3 lock for Pact of the Blade. Now everything your character does works off of your Charisma including your range attack when needed.
Yeah, stats is tough for druid, but need to check what do we need from his spells, and if we can dump wis and still cast them nicely maybe it could work, thematically sounds cool 😎
Just a note for anyone building a zombie army. If your newborn zombies die outside of combat (by wasting away) every friendly npc in the area becomes hostile. Not sure if its a bug, but this mechanic made me restart the moonrise fight 3 times before i figured out what was happening. Best fix is just to head to camp and let them die there
Not a bug, Necromancy in general is illegal in many areas of the game. If you are trying to do a "good" play threw but still use Necromancy, it is best to keep it to combat only.

I broke my oath by taking paladin convo option but after instead of stepping in I just encouraged her vengeance. After she killed the goblin while I stood by my oath was broken. Oath Breaker Knight appeared on the spot. Told me I was a naughty boy and that he’d see me at my camp that night.
PFF, I wasn’t planning to break the oath on my paladin (picked the “Vengeance” one) but I accidentally did break it…. After saving Emerald Grove I went to check all surrounding area before moving on and went to the place where goblin Sazza was held in prison. She was laying dead inside of the closed cage. I’ve decided to open the cage just to loot her dead body… and that broke my oath LOL I guess that the game counts that as if u were trying free her from tieflings.
I really like that you can get your oath back, but I would’ve loved to see it be tied to some sort of quest rather than just pay X gold. Makes it seem like money matters more than your oath, rather than you truly doing something to earn redemption
It's actually more so that God's do NOT like oathbreakers and you need the help of extremely powerful entities to get your connection to the divine back, but their help isn't free.

It’s not like they just wipe your God’s memory of breaking the oath. If they’re that powerful, there’s no point in even worshipping someone else lol
@@slam6802 It's less what you're thinking, Gods can't be bothered with mundane bullshit, can you imagine how many paladins across the realms break their oaths? They hate oathbreakers but if some sneaky borderline deity can simply reattach what was lost then I doubt the God will even notice, if they did they'd probably be pissed off.

Improved pact of the blade at warlock 5 is currently bugged and stacks with extra attack. Oathbreaker 7, warlock 5 will get pretty much everything important from oathbreaker, fully scale off charisma, and have an extra attack.
Oath of ancients is the easiest to break. Kill a civilian / innocent. If you already wiped out the entire town then use an animate dead scroll or do the hags questline kill the guys trapped there or get the wand to summin 1 zombie.
Ancients you'll probably break it by defending that one woman from the ambushing bugbear then immediately killing her, but the easiest is the Devotion because you can basically do it immediately after the tutorial.
i plan on starting oath of devotion drow or githyanki (gith for misty step and mage hand), and playing as like a "jedi knight" but doing the dark urge playthrough, and breaking that oath and turning more into a sith character. i was thinking oathbreaker fits perfectly, and adding sorcerer as a subclass would allow me to use things like thunderwave and other force like abilites for a cool sith themed playstyle :)
Here's a fun tip. SPOILERS: If you want to rescue the goblin from jail without breaking your oath of vengeance, use astarion to pick the lock. But, if you click on the opened door as your paladin, the cut scene will play and you will break the oath. So avoid the door! Once you have the goblin and your oath is intact, save the game. It is advised to have another character lead the party until this part is over. Make sure to clear the cave out of enemies and traps before proceeding.
Yeah, but if you're going on an honour mode run and don't want to have to fight the netherbrain in Act 3 you can also get Gale to proceed to confront the brain by himself and use the netherese orb to nuke it. Got to do it in Act 3 though. Act 2 doesn't count for the Foehammer achievement/trophy.
No, attack success determined by DEX or STR, whatever highest, so if you wear Heavy armor, there is almost no point in dex. Dex adds to Armor Class if you Medium armor or below, and for initiative rolls, but thats fine for pal to have low dex
Clickbait vid. No gear or usefull information for a real playthrough. Cheating to reach max level and then show "How strong" this is... You cant raise undead until level 9 so this is completely useless
In my experience its a bit random, just before recording i tested and got oath broken just by saving goblin from cage, and on this attempt i did all bad stuff before triggering oathbreaker
For dark urge people who wanna break their oath, just cut off gales hand instead of helping him in the first area. It should be the first option and I did this with a vengeance paladin
Anyone got a good way to break your oath of vengeance for Minthara? I'd like to run her as an oathbreaker once I get her, but the majority of ways that are recommended are for a MC in act 1. Just wondering as you don't get to recruit her until act 2 and oath of vengence seems less obvious as to how to break over the other 2. Being a vengence paladin drow by default, I think she's a good fit for this build if not your MC.
oath of vengeance is much much harder to break than the other two. so far you can only break your oath with the very first encounter with the tieflings who have captured you companion. otherwise you need to respec to one of the other two and just break it that way
I'm level 6 rn and got ann oathbreaker custom and have gale as my necromancer. It's pretty disgusting with the AOE buffs on all alies and summons. A real good combo for going an evil playthrough like me.
You don't even have to go that far. I broke my oath immediately by helping Lazel out of her cage. Didn't even lie to the tieflings, just defended her when they broke her cage. I don't see how anyone could play the game as a straight Paladin, way too easy to break your oath unintentionally.
Y'all really put too little thought into your actions. It took me hitting almost Lv5, killing most of the Goblin Fort, taking out the Gnolls, fighting the Shadow Druids, dealing with some of the characters in the Underdark before I broke my Oath by mistake as a Dark Urge Paladin. Mind you, I wasn't entirely avoiding Dark Urge actions. I bit off a Goblins toe. I day dreamed about slaughtering people. I spoke about slaughtering people. It was when I actively took the Dark Urge line of betraying the Grove with Minthara that I lost my Oath (already had Priestess Gut dead, her Ogre dead, Halsin found and freed, half the keep dead). And you can lie as a Paladin without it breaking your Oath. I lie frequently before breaking my Oath. Lying isn't a problem. The reason for lying, is. If you lie to the Tieflings to get them to leave the area so you DON'T have to fight them, that is adhering to your Oath of protecting the innocent. Because they clearly want Lae'zul dead and will be hostile second she is out. Taking actions to avoid making them hostile or killing Lae'zul adheres to the Oath.

Just do some more stuff, i actually broke vengeance oath, by helping this goblin escape, and then killing him at first try, and when i started to record this stuff i needed to do all of that to break oath.
I don't understand how u have the oathbreaker in your Inventoy to pick up, did u kill him somewhere, or do u get him as a zombie later im lvl 3 oathbreaker ìs s he in a crypt when u go meet zerelor whatever(the guy who gives you any hirling and 100 coin class respec)?? He can tank, and summon tanking bodies. So doble range damage will work nice, gloomstalker + warlock/wiz/sorc, and add druid/cleric for support. you can go with spore druid as support if you dont mind controling 10 summons
depending on what weapon you're going for. Most of the time you'll aim for STR meele weapon and Heavy Armor, so you can dump DEX. But there is possibilities of more mobile Pals with medium armor and finese weapons so preety possible!
One question, i’ m now Fighter lv 2 and Paladin oathbreaker lv2. I want to Respec (with the undead guy at camp) and go 4 lv paladin, will this cancel the oathbreaker?
That's good :) you can kick/throw him more, and even longrest, if he is still there, attack him more (or throw him off cliff) , sometime its enough to break oath, sometime you need to go for tieflings or do other bad stuff, you will break it eventually

Aura of protection's not very good? It's literally one of the best abilities in DnD. You also don't have to pick "one of three" you can use ALL of your auras at once. But anyway Aura of Protection adds your charisma bonus to EVERY saving throw for you AND ALLIES. DEX saves on AOE attacks (do not dump your DEX to 8 like shown here keep it at 10), your concentration saves for your elemental weapon, bless, etc is a CON save so it adds CHR bonus to that as well. That helps them not be interrupted and wasted. Adds CHR bonus to your wisdom saves (which you dumped to 8. Again do not dump your WIS keep it at 10) which is a TON of spells that do nasty things to you. Things like being shoved, knocked prone, dazed, all these throws that are STR or CON. Last but not least it STILL adds your CHR modifier to even saves that are already CHR like a charm spell. Again cannot stress this enough that it also does this for EVERY ALLY in the radius. It is so much better than a few damage from Aura of Hate especially at the level you get it. That you only get to yourself and one pretty mediocre zombie, it also affects every undead enemy too so it can be more detrimental than good. Since you do not have to pick only one aura like he said here ALWAYS keep Aura of Protection up and selectively turn off Aura of Hate. This advice was really not good and it doesn't seem like you've played the game and used a cheat or something to get to 12 to show people this.
Yeah, 2h is nice, but still you need fighting style for it.to be good, and it will eat defence fighting style + shield 2ac, so its easier to hit you by ~15%...but... I always on the side of going stylish instead of "stats" in game like this:) so go for 2h if thats your stylish approach
The goblin in the cage in druid village, obviously had murdered humans, and gotten locked up. Why as a vengeance paladin can I not let the people whom the goblins were killing, deliver justice with the crossbow? So f***ing stupid. I thought the whole point was to deliver justice, the goblins are a vile race and should be exterminated because all they do is raid, kill, and eat humans. In tabletop D&D my dungeon master said this was fine, obviously the people who made Baldurs Gate say otherwise, looks like it's oathbreaker for me, kinda dumb.
i just wanna say that dark vish dose pretty much nothing in the game, and isnt a must have... as the game devs made it so when your in the dark it doesn't suck as much when you dont have dark vish. i think they should instead give advantage when fighting in the dark.
That is THE worse most complicated way to break your oath....just go to where lizal is gth fighter. Just say you will free her...attack those tieflings he showed u...skip all that other crap ye showed u you don't need to do it.
Actually, its a bit random in my experience, one time i just got it from kicking that goblin twice, one time from kicking vase and fighting merchant, another time as you described... But when i started recording i got it only after doing all of this in one run

You can also just open Sazza cage and it breaks it even just touching the door does it when open if you want to do it again
Kill anyone innocent for Vengeance. Super easy. The Tieflings at the start are the easiest if you're planning to Oathbreak. If not, just wait.

I got half way to Lv5 before breaking my Oath as a Dark Urge Oath of Vengeance. It's fairly easy to avoid breaking your Oath even as a Dark Urge. Folks just need to think about their actions instead of looking at the immediate response.
Only reason I broke my Oath is because I figured the Dark Urge inner thought would let me come to my senses and back out of betraying the location of the Grove but I was locked in until I broke my Oath and could back out at that point. Didn't want to save scum, will know in the future.
The Darkness spell, from level 5, it’s a race spell, not a class spell. There are some “hidden” spells for most races(maybe all races). For example tieflings get different spells at lvl 3 and 5, depending on their subrace

Darkness is an Oathbreaker spell as well, it is unlocked at level 5. All though it is also a race ability for drow. So the video is not wrong.
I imagine this build would go great with Gale as a Necromancer and Halsin as a Spores Druid. Tons of undead minions to boost with Aura of Hate.
This is exactly what I’m doing in my playthrough, I just got Halsin so now it’s time to go crazy
I swear the majority of minions summoned are unarmed so the aura doesn't work?

If u really want to maximize this build you go to level 7 pally with the STR build then respec at level 8 switching to a Charisma build. Take 5 pally, 3 lock for Pact of the Blade. Now everything your character does works off of your Charisma including your range attack when needed.

Yeah, stats is tough for druid, but need to check what do we need from his spells, and if we can dump wis and still cast them nicely maybe it could work, thematically sounds cool 😎

Just a note for anyone building a zombie army. If your newborn zombies die outside of combat (by wasting away) every friendly npc in the area becomes hostile. Not sure if its a bug, but this mechanic made me restart the moonrise fight 3 times before i figured out what was happening.
Best fix is just to head to camp and let them die there
Not a bug, Necromancy in general is illegal in many areas of the game. If you are trying to do a "good" play threw but still use Necromancy, it is best to keep it to combat only.
@izzydarkhart4144 they don't become aggressive with your regular zombie summons, only when your infected zombies die.

I broke my oath by taking paladin convo option but after instead of stepping in I just encouraged her vengeance. After she killed the goblin while I stood by my oath was broken. Oath Breaker Knight appeared on the spot. Told me I was a naughty boy and that he’d see me at my camp that night.

PFF, I wasn’t planning to break the oath on my paladin (picked the “Vengeance” one) but I accidentally did break it…. After saving Emerald Grove I went to check all surrounding area before moving on and went to the place where goblin Sazza was held in prison. She was laying dead inside of the closed cage. I’ve decided to open the cage just to loot her dead body… and that broke my oath LOL I guess that the game counts that as if u were trying free her from tieflings.

I really like that you can get your oath back, but I would’ve loved to see it be tied to some sort of quest rather than just pay X gold. Makes it seem like money matters more than your oath, rather than you truly doing something to earn redemption
It's actually more so that God's do NOT like oathbreakers and you need the help of extremely powerful entities to get your connection to the divine back, but their help isn't free.
@@boanoah6362 but surely a God would like you to do some redemption arc for them far more than just paying another borderline deity to just magically restore your oath. It’s not like they just wipe your God’s memory of breaking the oath. If they’re that powerful, there’s no point in even worshipping someone else lol
@@slam6802 It's less what you're thinking, Gods can't be bothered with mundane bullshit, can you imagine how many paladins across the realms break their oaths? They hate oathbreakers but if some sneaky borderline deity can simply reattach what was lost then I doubt the God will even notice, if they did they'd probably be pissed off.

Improved pact of the blade at warlock 5 is currently bugged and stacks with extra attack. Oathbreaker 7, warlock 5 will get pretty much everything important from oathbreaker, fully scale off charisma, and have an extra attack.

Oath of ancients is the easiest to break. Kill a civilian / innocent. If you already wiped out the entire town then use an animate dead scroll or do the hags questline kill the guys trapped there or get the wand to summin 1 zombie.
Ancients you'll probably break it by defending that one woman from the ambushing bugbear then immediately killing her, but the easiest is the Devotion because you can basically do it immediately after the tutorial.
All I had to do to break my oath was kill the two Tieflings and hack off Gale’s hand.
i plan on starting oath of devotion drow or githyanki (gith for misty step and mage hand), and playing as like a "jedi knight" but doing the dark urge playthrough, and breaking that oath and turning more into a sith character. i was thinking oathbreaker fits perfectly, and adding sorcerer as a subclass would allow me to use things like thunderwave and other force like abilites for a cool sith themed playstyle :)
Here's a fun tip. SPOILERS:
If you want to rescue the goblin from jail without breaking your oath of vengeance, use astarion to pick the lock.
But, if you click on the opened door as your paladin, the cut scene will play and you will break the oath. So avoid the door!
Once you have the goblin and your oath is intact, save the game. It is advised to have another character lead the party until this part is over. Make sure to clear the cave out of enemies and traps before proceeding.
Same as resurrecting Mayrina ‘s husband as ancients paladin, by using other member in the party instead.
Faster way to break oath is just kill the tieflings that captured laezel

Yeah, but if you're going on an honour mode run and don't want to have to fight the netherbrain in Act 3 you can also get Gale to proceed to confront the brain by himself and use the netherese orb to nuke it. Got to do it in Act 3 though. Act 2 doesn't count for the Foehammer achievement/trophy.

No, attack success determined by DEX or STR, whatever highest, so if you wear Heavy armor, there is almost no point in dex. Dex adds to Armor Class if you Medium armor or below, and for initiative rolls, but thats fine for pal to have low dex

There aren’t path breaking points as far as I know, it only takes a single action and specific actions are what triggers it.
In my experience its a bit random, just before recording i tested and got oath broken just by saving goblin from cage, and on this attempt i did all bad stuff before triggering oathbreaker

Anyone got a good way to break your oath of vengeance for Minthara? I'd like to run her as an oathbreaker once I get her, but the majority of ways that are recommended are for a MC in act 1.
Just wondering as you don't get to recruit her until act 2 and oath of vengence seems less obvious as to how to break over the other 2.
Being a vengence paladin drow by default, I think she's a good fit for this build if not your MC.

oath of vengeance is much much harder to break than the other two. so far you can only break your oath with the very first encounter with the tieflings who have captured you companion. otherwise you need to respec to one of the other two and just break it that way

I'm level 6 rn and got ann oathbreaker custom and have gale as my necromancer. It's pretty disgusting with the AOE buffs on all alies and summons. A real good combo for going an evil playthrough like me.

You don't even have to go that far. I broke my oath immediately by helping Lazel out of her cage. Didn't even lie to the tieflings, just defended her when they broke her cage. I don't see how anyone could play the game as a straight Paladin, way too easy to break your oath unintentionally.

Y'all really put too little thought into your actions. It took me hitting almost Lv5, killing most of the Goblin Fort, taking out the Gnolls, fighting the Shadow Druids, dealing with some of the characters in the Underdark before I broke my Oath by mistake as a Dark Urge Paladin.
Mind you, I wasn't entirely avoiding Dark Urge actions. I bit off a Goblins toe. I day dreamed about slaughtering people. I spoke about slaughtering people. It was when I actively took the Dark Urge line of betraying the Grove with Minthara that I lost my Oath (already had Priestess Gut dead, her Ogre dead, Halsin found and freed, half the keep dead).
And you can lie as a Paladin without it breaking your Oath. I lie frequently before breaking my Oath. Lying isn't a problem. The reason for lying, is. If you lie to the Tieflings to get them to leave the area so you DON'T have to fight them, that is adhering to your Oath of protecting the innocent. Because they clearly want Lae'zul dead and will be hostile second she is out. Taking actions to avoid making them hostile or killing Lae'zul adheres to the Oath.

Just do some more stuff, i actually broke vengeance oath, by helping this goblin escape, and then killing him at first try, and when i started to record this stuff i needed to do all of that to break oath.

What party composition best pairs with oathbreaker paladin?
He can tank, and summon tanking bodies. So doble range damage will work nice, gloomstalker + warlock/wiz/sorc, and add druid/cleric for support. you can go with spore druid as support if you dont mind controling 10 summons

depending on what weapon you're going for. Most of the time you'll aim for STR meele weapon and Heavy Armor, so you can dump DEX. But there is possibilities of more mobile Pals with medium armor and finese weapons so preety possible!

That's good :) you can kick/throw him more, and even longrest, if he is still there, attack him more (or throw him off cliff) , sometime its enough to break oath, sometime you need to go for tieflings or do other bad stuff, you will break it eventually

Aura of protection's not very good? It's literally one of the best abilities in DnD. You also don't have to pick "one of three" you can use ALL of your auras at once. But anyway Aura of Protection adds your charisma bonus to EVERY saving throw for you AND ALLIES. DEX saves on AOE attacks (do not dump your DEX to 8 like shown here keep it at 10), your concentration saves for your elemental weapon, bless, etc is a CON save so it adds CHR bonus to that as well. That helps them not be interrupted and wasted. Adds CHR bonus to your wisdom saves (which you dumped to 8. Again do not dump your WIS keep it at 10) which is a TON of spells that do nasty things to you.
Things like being shoved, knocked prone, dazed, all these throws that are STR or CON. Last but not least it STILL adds your CHR modifier to even saves that are already CHR like a charm spell. Again cannot stress this enough that it also does this for EVERY ALLY in the radius. It is so much better than a few damage from Aura of Hate especially at the level you get it. That you only get to yourself and one pretty mediocre zombie, it also affects every undead enemy too so it can be more detrimental than good.
Since you do not have to pick only one aura like he said here ALWAYS keep Aura of Protection up and selectively turn off Aura of Hate. This advice was really not good and it doesn't seem like you've played the game and used a cheat or something to get to 12 to show people this.

Yeah, 2h is nice, but still you need fighting style for it.to be good, and it will eat defence fighting style + shield 2ac, so its easier to hit you by ~15%...but... I always on the side of going stylish instead of "stats" in game like this:) so go for 2h if thats your stylish approach

The goblin in the cage in druid village, obviously had murdered humans, and gotten locked up. Why as a vengeance paladin can I not let the people whom the goblins were killing, deliver justice with the crossbow? So f***ing stupid. I thought the whole point was to deliver justice, the goblins are a vile race and should be exterminated because all they do is raid, kill, and eat humans. In tabletop D&D my dungeon master said this was fine, obviously the people who made Baldurs Gate say otherwise, looks like it's oathbreaker for me, kinda dumb.

i just wanna say that dark vish dose pretty much nothing in the game, and isnt a must have... as the game devs made it so when your in the dark it doesn't suck as much when you dont have dark vish. i think they should instead give advantage when fighting in the dark.
Pretty sure it helps if fighting inside darkness or fog cloud etc

That is THE worse most complicated way to break your oath....just go to where lizal is gth fighter. Just say you will free her...attack those tieflings he showed u...skip all that other crap ye showed u you don't need to do it.
Actually, its a bit random in my experience, one time i just got it from kicking that goblin twice, one time from kicking vase and fighting merchant, another time as you described... But when i started recording i got it only after doing all of this in one run
