The vapor coming from a whale's blow hole is called a spout. A fumerole refers to a volcanic emission.

As a translator and proofreader, the grammar mistakes, typos and use of wrong words (saying cotton yarn when it is clearly polyester plushie yarn, writing increase instead of decrease and writing black instead of blue yarn) read as bad translation or AI translation having been used. The packaging looks eerily similar to the Woobles packaging, so I'm leaning towards this being a cheap knockoff kit with translation issues. The QR code directing you to the wrong video also hints at this (lack of checking that the codes are correct for each pattern before printing and shipping is sus). I've had experience with a poorly translated kit myself, which was made many years ago before genAI came into play, where an entire section of the pattern said to increase while the stitch count at the end went down. Thankfully I caught it before my dragon became a mess, but as a beginner it was definitely confusing.

This is what I was thinking, cheap Woobles knock off (especially when it said it had easy peasey yarn). If it were an AI generated pattern, it wouldn't even look like a whale. LOL!

This comment needs more likes, because you are so right!! The packaging is definitely similar, and the easy easy yarn phrase in there, even tho the yarn is chenille which is not that easy for begginers, definitely is sus, the overall pattern is very round and simple just like the wobbles usually are

I don't think it's AI since the photo actually looks like the end result (typically that is the biggest problem). I think it was just a really badly written/translated pattern. I'm a crocheter..I take crochet with me wherever I go..I'd purchased from an Op shop a crocheting kit sometime last year, maybe even the year before..who can remember..the kit was for making two purses/pouches/whatever..the only thing that was missing was the hook, but eh, that was not a problem for me..there were two balls of acrylic yarn, a couple of buttons and sewing needle...I proceeded to make the two cases, but wait, there is more than enough yarn..so I end up making almost 5 of these things..I found that they were just the right size to hold a pair of reading glasses, notions and pens/pencils, plus small scissors..I like them so much that I plan to make more of them..good for use of scrap yarn..make interesting colour patterns and they would be good to sell on market stalls..I only paid $2 for the kit and well and truly got my money's worth out of them and kept my idle hands busy whilst camping..

Would love to see more crochet kit videos. I find them fascinating.
For example I had bought a cheap crochet kit last year for a really cute unicorn amigurumi. The wool was the cheapest stuff I have ever touched, almost felt like I was crocheting with plastic but with the added bonus of it splitting all the time, the packaging said there was a tapestry needle inside but there wasn't, the crochet hook was abyssmal and a size too small in my opinion, the filling they provided legit had pieces of plastic in it, the pattern was confusing and contained quite a few mistakes. Like they at some point just got the stitch count wrong so I always end up with 3 extra stitches. It also has no step by step video tutorial and the method they use for amigurumi is not my preferred method. Like at the beginning of each round, you do a 1ch and then at the end you slipstitch into that chain to close it up. Leaves a nasty seam.
But still. Fascinating. Like it is some kind of performance art.

To be fair, some yarns are made from extruded plastic (acrylic, nylon etc but most of the time, they don’t feel like it at all) and a lot of stuffing is shredded, recycled plastic bottles or similar now. That said, it doesn’t sound like they did a good job of prepping or sourcing any of the materials in the kit you got!

Haven't watched the complete video, but I can guarantee the description is a bad translation, AI would not make grammar mistakes... But the style of writing really makes me think of Aliexpress
Also, this kit screams chinese fake Woobles. Calling their yarn "Easy. Peasy Yarn", when Woobles's is "Easy Peasy Yarn", and the plastic bag it comes in, I really think it's a knockoff Woobles.
Oh, and the packaging says cotton yarn, but the yarn is a plushy yarn, which can't physically be made out of cotton, it's usually acrylic haha

    • @karolinetheelf
      @karolinetheelf 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

Same here, as well as the typos in the instructions read as bad translations. The first (and only) crochet kit I did a few years ago (that was bought long before generative AI was a thing) had the same mistake of writing increase instead of decrease for a whole section of the pattern. I was new to crochet and it was very confusing but I was able to figure it out.
I also noticed the bit about the "cotton" yarn, that type of yarn in the kit is most definitely polyester, could be a typo, could be a bad translation. Overall it's not necessarily screaming AI to me but rather a case of being a cheap knockoff with bad translations like you said, which isn't much better than AI tbh

I never saw that particular kit before, but it reminds me very much of Woobles. I've not made a Wooble, but I have seen reviews of them. They use very simple designs, mostly "ball shape" with a few different details. There are like 400 patterns but every single one is essentially a ball. I think they did the same thing with the crochet "online cours" which is what they claim makes their product so expensive and "totally worth it"
The simple design, simple instructions for begginers, and a basic video tutorial that can be used for multiple projects but gives you the basic technique to cover a specific part of a project. They use the female AI voice that I hate in ALL their advertisements...
"I wanted to learn to crochet while on a plane" 🤢
"I was waiting for my child in the drive through line and taught myself crochet!" 🤮
I do believe Woobles used Tshirt yarn, not that kind of fuzzy stuff I think is called "blanket yarn"

If you were truly a beginner, the typo in the fin pattern and the confusing tail pattern, plus the fact you didn't get access to the correct video means you wouldn't even end up with a finished product at all and you would have wasted your money. This would be SO frustrating and disappointing for a beginner. You could purchase a fully constructed whale plushie that size for $33 or less.

My sister bought her three kids kits for Christmas so they could do them when they visited. It was interesting to see the difference between the three kits and the instructions. Two the girls got were okay, but the third was horrible and written worse than the pattern you had. There were also errors in the pattern itself with stitches....and instead of yarn, it was a thick thread. Let's just say I gave him some of my yarn to use. I made the ami he wanted (as well as the girls) and the dog it made looked nothing like the photo in the kit. I have made literally thousands of amis, so it wasn't me.

Seems like the kit is probably a cheap aliexpress/temu/shein item thats just being resold on amazon. Thatd make sense for all the issues. That they're just using quick templates with minimal quality checks to pump out items (ie cheaper knockoff woobles by the looks of it). The increase issue would make sense if they were changing out the penguin instructions and forgot to change that part of the line.
Its not completely unworkable, but i personally probably wouldnt buy from that conpay again. As for the plush, Im more annoyed the water spray is the same blue instead of white. Looks like the poor little whale has a tumor or something.

So oddly, the instructions aren’t ripped off from Woobles, but from Crochetta. Now Crochetta is a Chinese company kicking out a LOT of kits for the American market, as far as I can tell (I just checked Aussie Amazon, and there are three or four Crochetta kits, but nothing like the American options). Their kits are normally either cotton or chenille, with hook sizes from 2.5 to 6, and their instructions look eerily similar to what you have, except Crochetta has far fewer translation errors. I don’t think Crochetta is ripping off anyone (maybe indie pattern makers?), tho.

Based on what I’ve seen on TH-cam of people getting ChatGPT to create amigurumi patterns for them, I think the pattern is too good to be ai generated. But definitely feels like AI or bad translation and slapdash made kit to make money off interest in kits like the Woobles. The packaging looks like they are copying the woobles, or at least “inspired” by that company.
I wouldn’t get this because it’s too much for such a flawed project. I’ve bought and made several woobles kits and enjoy them even though I’m not a beginner anymore. For an experienced crocheter, a kit isn’t cost effective but they can be great for beginners when well made and have quality control checks.

The least we can do as people who know how to crochet and know how this stuff works is to tell people to NOT buy these obviously sketchy kits. We shouldn't tell people that "maybe" they should. Just don't. I'm not shaming anyone for seeking out lower-cost and easier ways to try out a new hobby, but if someone buys this they are literally getting ripped off. It's just not acceptable. We need to let people know that a lot of these kits are knock-offs and cash grabs. For the same price you could buy the basic supplies and watch youtube videos for free that will be high-quality and accurate.

To be fair, a lot of people wouldn’t realise this was a rip off of someone else’s work. I wouldn’t have, if I were just casually browsing and not stopping to look closer (there’s also the fact I’m not familiar with Woobles at all). Some people don’t care about knock-offs either - they’re still part of the problem but you can’t force anyone to care about something. Overall I agree, though, the market doesn’t always care about quality (even if the people buying could afford it).

It's since been pointed out that this is a fairly obvious knock-off of Woobles but it's only obvious if you're familiar with Woobles. Which I definitely am not. If I'd known, would it have changed my response? Possibly? Overall, despite a few errors, the kit itself wasn't egregiously bad.

  • @snuggaboom

from what I could see from watching their video via your video is that they seem to be using black worsted weight yarn, which is INCREDIBLY difficult to see the stitches, and it looks tiny from their filming! there's no way a beginner would have a good time watching that on video, trying to discern stitch definition with black yarn is a nightmare if you aren't accustomed to it, etc. what they ought to do is show them making something with larger yarn in a brighter color, so that you can actually see what crocheting is supposed to look like! just my opinion, of course!
and no, I wouldn't buy this kit for myself or anyone else - it does look adorable, but with all those typos, I just wouldn't want to give it to a beginner because im afraid the frustration would actually turn them off from crochet altogether. ive never gotten a woobles kit, but I would much rather gift one of those - the yarn is great for beginners and people have raved about how clear the instructions are.
I really wish people didn't see crochet as a "make a quick buck" scheme, because while they are probably making money selling these kits cheaper than better companies, with the poor instructions and pointing people to a different video instruction entirely, I fear they are just not caring about getting more people into crochet and making them frustrated and will wind up hating it.

When i was learning Amigurumi i looked for kits that where a cheaper price to learn from. Even now I do not want to spend that much for a kit. I'd recommend beginners try their local craft store for a kit before buying from amazon. I know both Micheals and Hobby Lobby have pretty reasonable priced kits.

Includes chenille yarn and calls for a Magic ring without instructions.

So the Pokemon it reminds me a little bit of is a Mudkip.
It seems like a decent pattern, just plagued with possibly bad translation and poor-quality checks in the instructions/code. Honestly, it feels more like a kit from Temu or Wish; some knock-off company just trying to get money, cutting corners, and attempting to not get copyright infringements.
Also, the fumarole (I did not look up if that was the correct term, but I thought it was a blow hole or spout) looks like you sewed it on upside-down, but again, the instructions didn't make that clear. Like with the fins, and even the tail, the sewing instructions left a lot to be desired, and if a beginner was trying this as a first kit (and non-crocheters buying a kit for family/friends and not knowing), they would be quite frustrated. Did the other book that came with it (said Beginner's Complete Guide) have other information that may have pertained to this particular pattern, or was it one of those generic "This is how you make a slip knot..." instructions?

i feel like criticizing the packaging IS important as well tho bc this definitely SCREAMS that someone did not care about this kit enough to .. make sure it says CROCHETING instructions instead of knitting which starts to lead me down the path that this was ai generated or at least partially assisted by ai bc everyone's all about jumping on quick trends of everything and profiting off it so why should anyone put effort into making an actual comprehensive kit when people will buy any crochet kit that pops up these days bc woobles trendy. so keep criticizing it cos it's sus and sloppy.
ai was definitely used in some way on this. running the stitch count short for what to do in each rows is a COMMON ai mistake cos it has no idea how crochet works.
spheal is a cute round blorb seal pokemon. u might be thinking of mudkip like others have said. but also why did they give ORANGE for blush? why not pink? this pattern is really weak and leaves something to be desired.

Agree that critiquing the packaging is warranted, especially since it's fully opaque and you can't see the supplies that come inside, so the advertising on the packaging is ALL you have to go on to decide if you want to buy it or not. One could argue this kit has false advertising on it saying cotton yarn and then you get chenille.

That is so badly translated... But overall not a bad kit.Well, most bad thing are the mistakes in the pattern and the wrong video, but i had so many patterns from "expert crocheters" with a ton of mistakes that i am quite impressed that a kit like that had only those few mistakes in the pattern! (Just a few weeks before i paid effing 12 Euros for a pattern and i can´t make it, mistakes even in the second row and i canßt figure out how to get through that mess)
I tried to find that kit but it is not available on german amazon. But if i search in my usual yarn stores here, the price for the yarn, the hook, the needle and the stitchmarkers would be around 17 Euros. i left out the stuffing, because you could use a old pillow to get stuffing. So if that kit would be like 30 euros it still would be kinda okay. Enough material to make 2, so you can learn from the mistakes and a good hook with a good yarn needle will bring you further along into the crochet journey.

Im not sure if this is AI - so much as a dupe of other kits. The kit seems to be a knock off of the Woobles kits - The clue to me is the reference on the package to Easy Peasy Yarn, which is what Woobles call their T-shirt yarn - as it does not split (although what you got was chenille yarn - so not the same thing) Ive accidentally gotten knock off kits before - and teh QR card actually sent me to a Wooble video which had be re-uploaded to the knock off site. I will say that the knock off kit that i got was clearly from Temu and cost 10 USD so very different value for money. (Secret Santa thing - so no hate to the gifter of that to me - that was the budget) Compared to that kit WOobles are expensive (50-60 USD) But as a one off or foundation to a Crochet Habit - its not a bad place to start.

I didn’t use this particular kit, I used one called crochet box to make a highland cow. Mine came out twice the size of the picture, even though I’d followed the pattern religiously. I even went down a hook size. It came with a video tutorial also, but I found it hard to watch. The pattern for a specific part of the cow was really confusing, even my sister couldn’t understand it, had to wing it a bit, which for a beginner isn’t great. I want to try the woobles kits but have been left a bit nervous of trying new kits.

If you want to try another kit, Woobles - the real one - won’t steer you wrong. The instructions are very clear, and not only are there step by step tutorial instructions (where you tell the instructions when to move ahead, you’re not always pausing a video), they also have a lot of the basic stitches in short videos on their TH-cam account. All of my long time knitting and crochet friends can’t believe how fast I got my head around crocheting or how quickly I moved on to complicated projects, and I 100% credit Woobles for it.

A friend wanted to please me and bought me on Amazon, an Amigurumi Crochet Book. She's not " rich" so she bought me one of the chespest book for 10$. When I opened the Amazon package, I already KNEW it was an AI written book. !🥴🥺🙄
The amigurumis illustrated on the cover were of a " weird shape". I opened it, and its start to tell you ( like you are the stupiest person on EARTH or worst, an extraterrestrial who had never been in a room to sitdowb and crochet!!! I almost not exagerating!!!! They wrote" Material needed ": a chair and a table ......IH WAIT, you forgot to write: be sure there is oxygen and light !!!!😢
Its like that all along thebook.
    NOT A SINGLE PATTERN!
They say" what crocheti g a monsters amigurumiswill bring you?: you are gonna learn patience. The finished product will bring you joy.
If you want a bigger monster: crochet it bigger, or if you want a little, crochet it smaller!!!!!
Seriously, it got me MAD, cuz I think that if ! I pay attention to the package I would be able to recognize an AI amigurumis patterns or not. BUT, those persons who are not used reading and buying online, they are gonna buy for sure a totally usekess book. It makes me mad. ( and, this is when they don't stealing the pictures from à real seller on ETSY or Ravelry.
I hope content creators are gonna talk more about this important topic. We have to stand together against those institutions and/ or compagnies that we can't reach and make them accountable and responsable for what they do and sell .
Thank you Leigh for yours absolutely important 😮presence 🤩✌️👏👏👏👏

AI or Bad translation is definitely a coin toss question, it cold go either way your best to just flip a coin and let it decide what way it went.
I got one kit from a different company that to do a piece it said to "put the hook in the right place" checked the video it said " put the hook in the right place" and has the hands blocking the project so there wasn't enough visible for me to figure out where they was going in at. I had a neighbor get a kit for a very loved company for these kits and I had to watch the video with them, so I could explain to them what they was doing and write out the pattern so that they could understand it.
Edit: PS i do have have one and only one place where I will get and recommend others to get kits from. So there are good kits out there.

just looking at the thumbnail i thought this was going to be a woobles review just based on how similar they look. The price range is very similar as well and set up almost the same way. the video almost looked like a woobles tutorial as well, then again filming a crochet tutorial can only be done a few ways, however, woobles starts their magic rings and has easy peasy yarn as well as their own hooks and seem to be a better option than this kit. If it isnt AI then it could be from another country and poorly translated.

I've never quite understood the appeal of crochet kits, UNLESS they're fairly priced and actually work better than grabbing any old cotton yarn and finding a beginner youtube tutorial. If you're paying for something that has cheap or completely free alternatives online, available at the click of a button, that paid pattern can't afford to have mistakes like mixing increases and decreases. If you're at a point where you can figure it out, you likely don't need a kit, and if you can't, the kit is useless.

Would I buy this kid? Heck no. I think all those so-called beginner kits are over priced and overrated. For the price of those kits, you could go buy everything you need and then find a free amigurumi pattern online anywhere. There's maybe upwards of thousand of free patterns out there and for what you get with these kits, isn't much different. At least you'd get cohesive tutorials and even videos that would actually help you understand what to do. Honestly speaking, I don't even consider amigurumi a beginner friendly project. Blankets, scarves, hats, those are beginner projects. Amigurumi is something you do once you know how to read a pattern and understand the language (abbreviations) and you are comfortable holding the hook and know the basic stitches and how to increase and decrease. But even with all that being said, I would never buy or recommend one of those kits. They're just a waste of money.
