  • Except for a brief transit around the Palm Beach area, we’ve not traveled the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in Dirona. In our first leg along the ICW, we ran from from Mile 0 at Plymouth, Virginia opposite the Elizabeth River from Norfolk, to Mile 12 at Great Bridge, Virginia. En route we passed under eight bridges, but only needed one opened for us, the Great Bridge Bascule Bridge at mile 12. The fourth bridge we passed under, the Gilmerton Lift Bridge, had a clearance of 35ft closed, only 5ft above our 30-ft air draft, but good enough for us to pass. The rest were either normally-open railroad bridges or had clearances of 65ft or more.
We also passed through the only lock on the Virginia Cut route through ICW, the Great Bridge Lock, just before the Great Bridge Bascule Bridge. (Two locks are along the alternate Dismal Swamp route). All the locks we’ve passed through so far have been tide-level locks. The Great Bridge Lock instead separates the saltwater of the Elizabeth River from the freshwater of the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal. The lock coordinates it’s opening with the bridge, so we only had to manage one timing for this run.
Taken while cruising the ICW on Nordhavn 52 Dirona. For context see mvdirona.com/trips/icw2016/icw1.html.
