A virtual private network (VPN) allows secure access to network resources and services across public networks. QVPN Service integrates both VPN server and client capabilities - providing the ability to create a VPN client that connects to a remote server or third-party provider to access contents or services. It also allows using a QNAP NAS as a VPN server with PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, and QNAP's proprietary QBelt VPN protocols. Install QVPN Service from the QTS App Center and set up your VPN connection now.
QVPN Service supports industry-standard VPN protocols and QNAP's proprietary QBelt. QBelt was designed around security and lowers the chance of the connection being detected as a VPN - further reducing the possibility of network traffic interception.
Set up a QNAP NAS with QVPN Service to connect to a remote VPN server for secure data access without geographic limitations. The connection can be further set as the NAS default gateway to redirect all outgoing network traffic to the VPN.
QVPN Device Client is a powerful tool that enables VPN connections directly to your QNAP NAS via protocols including QBelt. Connection logs are kept for reviewing historical usage data, and a built-in speed test allows you to check VPN connection speeds.
QuWAN is QNAP's SD-WAN solution and features Auto Mesh VPN, IPsec encryption and cloud-centric management. Compatible with a wide range of QNAP products, QuWAN enables small businesses to efficiently build a dependable network at a cost-effective price; and to facilitate digital transformation, multi-site expansion, and remote working. QVPN Device Client allows computers and mobile devices to connect to QuWAN infrastructure, providing immediate benefits from modern networking solutions.

Very clear and concise video; I'm using QBelt from this year, and just wish I'd known all about this years ago. Thanks for the very useful fully functional free software.

Ok, this is my first NAS that I have ever built. I also just finished tech school for networking. There are a few questions that I have after watching your video. How do users connect to the VPN, as in is there software that gets created somehow (if yes, how) or is there a website? Additionally how does a person get their "outside" IP address? I am not a business, I am a home user so home modem/router combination unit and home user ISP. Do I have to call my ISP and get it or is it listed in my ipconfig/all?

Does the QNAP QVPN Client allow choosing specific applications to use/bypass the VPN? As an example bypassing VPN for a Plex server and using VPN for Down Load Station 5? Or use/bypass VPN for Container Station? I am unsure if this is termed 'split tunnel'? Other VPN services allow Applications and IP's to use or bypass the VPN.

Not sure how to add my QNAP Ip address. As it is dynamic it keeps changing on both my router and as a result my QNAP and and the same applies to my clients.

I have my NAS at home with variable IP. I would like to be able to connect to it from my work through the QVPN app on my Windows laptop. I am trying to set up a QBelt connection. It is enabled on the NAS. I filled in the myQNAPcloud address which I am otherwise able to connect through remotely to my NAS, I use username and password for myQNAPcloud (also tried with credentials I use to log into the NAS directly), same port and pre-shared key as I have set in NAS. But I still can't connect. Any idea what could be an issue? Is there anything that needs to be set up in the router? Thank you.

Would appreciate some help, QBelt, the DNS server setting, what is this referring to? External DNS address or the router I'm using? Or even the NAS itself?

@@QNAPUK Thanks for the reply, think that may be where my conflict is. I have the router set as the DNS server, but QBelt reserves the 10.x.x.x range. Should the NAS be configured as DNS server as well? Will there be a conflict if 2 DNS servers are enabled with different ranges?

The video title says "Remote access to network" but this only shows remote access to the NAS. I have setup a VPN server on my TS-231P, I can access it from outside of the network, but I can only access the NAS, but I want to be able to access other devices on my home network (that the NAS is attached to) I have spent many hours and different search terms trying to find guidance on this but have been unsuccessful. Remotely connecting to your home network as if you were "physically" at home connected is often mentioned in "how to setup your own VPN server" guides as a reason to do it, but I can find no guides on how to link/bridge your home network to the VPN server. Are you able to point me to some info on what I am trying to achieve? Thanks in advance

@@QNAPUK Oh, my bad, I assumed I still needed to bridge the VPN network with my private network, I just tested and all is good. That was using L2TP, i really want to use OpenVPN but have not been successful in getting a connection. Now that I know it works with L2TP, I can start troubleshooting OpenVPN. Thanks again for your reply.

    Good info..
I've connected using QVPN to remote in order to use rsyc (Hybrid Backup) into a remote location, but unfortunately i cannot ping the remote's LAN from SSH (ping). QVPN has "green" status, and ts connected.
    So something is a miss.
As a test i can successfully connect local CIFS/SMB with HBS3 , so that works, so presumably DNS issue?? There's no point in creating sync job if ping fails.

@@QNAPUK The NAS has VPN client in the range of 10.0.0.x so it can see the remote endpoint.. Spoke to QNAP rep, and they said the "fix" was to use "NAS as gateway"
i will try that.. Reckon it would work?
As the only thing i can see, if i connect via Sophos VPN client on windows,, *routes" are automatically added (checked that in logs)... This could be why it maps shares ok on Windows machine, but doesn't when connected via QVPN.. It can't "see" windows shares on remote LAN, because it doesn't have routes.
From HBS i would test via one-way sync enter 10.0.0.177 and put share name. If it can see folder when selecting destination in GUI that is proof itself for further tests. I'm now inclined to do this all on on LAN: Set up VPN server and QVPN Windows connects to this, mapping smb, then i can play around with syncing back and fourth without getting into trouble :)

I have an issue maybe you know what I'm doing wrong... I recently bought TS-231P3 2 Bay and added 2-3T HD. The Qnap is connected with an Ethernet and the Speeds are 240 DL and 12 UL.
I connected a Windows Laptop from a different location to the Qnap using OpenVPN and it works perfectly!
BUT... when I try with my Macbook Pro using pretty much the same steps it connects but everything loads really slow! On the Windows Laptop which is on the same network as the Macbook everything is fast and works great.
What am I missing? I also tried connecting the mac using L2TP and WebDAV and still bad as far as the speed goes. Also, my Macbook is 2019 vs the Windows Laptop which is 2017.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I always thought VPN was a substitute, but then i realised : VPN's do not encrypt data, only connection..
But it's still a good alternative, as less-bad things will happen in a Point-to-Point scenario. Yes, you'd have to open ports, but wth SSH, you'd be doing that anyway an if its to an office, chances are you've got port 443 open.
