Trust me when I say that it's still not cool to be a nerd now. Sports still reign supreme in high school, at least where I live. Yes, there is a huge emphasis on GPA and making it into a top-notch college at my school, but only to that extent. The overachievers, the kids who study just to learn, the people reading non-fiction for fun-- yeah, nothing has changed for them. Not to mention that traditionally geeky things like D&D or science fiction are practically unheard of. My best friend is a gigantic Harry Potter nerd, but it's not like she can just join a club or something, since pretty much every club is carefully designed to look as attractive as possible on a college application. The glorification of cheerleaders and football players, the rampant body image issues, and the intense desire to conform... yeah, everyone at my school wants to look like cookie cutter versions of the same person with different skin tones to spice it up. It hasn't gotten better at all :/
Online presents all the conventions that happen every year the fact that nerd culture such as gaming and sci fi films, anime obviously not the only examples out there lol are more socially acceptable and that you can turn to an online community who is exactly into what you are is awesome! Its 10x better now a days then 10 years ago when i was in high school lol I agree its not perfect but it has gotten wayyyyy better and there is no denying that fact. Now when it comes to school clubs and what not im loooong out of high school lol but I think things like youtube especially offer communitys for us nerds and thats much better then being outcasts with your small friend group the way it used to be Also I love reading and booktube is awesome and also did not exist when Bo wrote this song just my thoughts tho

But, from his lack of observation and blank affect I suspect he's pretty well got his input turned off. The detailed observation is one reason Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade is such an excellent film.
i think this song is amazing. me and so many other teens get told by older people that what they’re going through is small compared to them. or since the adult already went through it they don’t have pity cuz they already went through it. we don’t have many older people that are there for us especially with depression and stuff like that. so i think it means a lot when bo says he has your back. idk if i explained that well but i hope i got my point across 😂

As someone who graduated HS in 09, and being 5'8" and 90lbs soaking wet most of high-school the stuff in this song was still pretty common. Maybe not out in the open all the time, but the wind carries whispers, and you ended up hearing all the names and mocking that was going on regardless. Was rough at the time, and when I first heard this it was a bittersweet gut punch
I don’t think of this song as being specifically about “nerds” but about the way children insult each other, it doesn’t matter who’s on top because kids are taught to judge those who are “lesser”. Just think about the way Bo’s character responds to the vitriol. When he’s called the f word he also resorts to ad hominem. Or there’s the common refrain that assures kids who have it rough then they’ll have the better lives later or “your life peaks at graduation”. None of it is good both from the jocks and the nerds. And let me tell you, as a neurodivergant translesbian Jew, yeah that culture is still very alive, and a real problem that just gets brushed under the rug as “part of being a kid”
Honestly, I'm the anti-popularity kid who detests most popular kids in my school bc most of them are so self-absorbed and have all this crazy drama, such as recurring pregnancies and abortions, bullying, fake friends... It's honestly kind of sad, but I'm glad I'm not a part of it all. It's cool to be uncool.
Yea, the stereotypes didn't exist how we traditionally like to think of it when I was in high school. The roles still kind of existed but "jocks" weren't really a thing and somewhat popular people could like nerdy things. There were still the awkward and hardcore nerdy people that got the blunt force of it. I'd have been one of them but I was 6'4" and nobody wanted to mess with me. People could still be really mean, though. Also, people avoiding me was honestly more hurtful than anything they could have said to my face.
