- The city of Hull, also called "Kingston upon Hull", is a port city South of York in England.
We start our walk at the city centre on the Victoria Square. We walk around the centre a bit which is rather empty this evening because Hull also hosts Europes biggest fun fair. The fair is happening at the moment.
From the centre with sights like the Princess Quay and Hull Minster we also see the old town with the Scale Lane and some old bars around there. We miss the marina this time. Walking along the River Hull it is getting darker so we end this walk on the Scale Lane Swing Bridge which is an interesting construction.

Thank you for the hint. The hostel owner recommended the marina. Don't know why I missed it. I saw some water and thought that was it. I mostly missed the fair which was also on that day yet I knew it one day too late. So it goes 🤗

In 2019 I visited some friends in Hull. Never before I saw such a fine town and met so very friendly and helpful people. Watched the video and got homesick. Can t get enough from this video

I find it such a pity that Hull has the grim reputation that it does in the UK... In my opinion, it must be one of the better preserved of the larger cities in the UK. Considering how heavily bombed it was in the war, I find it amazing how many old buildings survived, or at least how much of the city was rebuilt sympathetically.
Phippsta Yes it was the second most bombed city in the war, next to London. I think that is right. Yes some of the architecture is lovely, perfectly restored.
@@susanjewitt8783 Exactly that. I mean, I know not ALL of it is nice/ there are some not so nice areas of the centre, but I would say nearly 2/3rds of it remains/is to a good standard. Pity more cities didn't do that after they were bombed.

Thanks Henry, Hull wasn't on my list yet it was nice little stopover. I was in York and failed to find good accommodation in Leeds on my way to Manchester that weekend so I took the bus to Hull. I totally missed the Hull Fair which just happened that weekend in October and it's one thing Hull in known for. Reminded me to check the dates of events always...
There's something on the floor next to it and it explains how it's placed specifically so when the sun or moon is in the right place it creates some sort of pattern, I belive so anyway. Its surrounded by dates of other times it's happened

Thank you! I think I went to the minster around 33:22 though only shortly. The museums quarter surely looked interesting and whenever I come back I'll stay a bit longer to see some more parts Hull - also in daylight. It was a really nice trip through England and I have a few more videos coming - probably one every 2-3 weeks from different places in the country. I enjoyed visiting Hull. Thanks for watching!

@RED PK184 i used to go party at houses in Bransholme and orchard park after coming to hull clubbing. Like I said not one bit of trouble, the two times when it has looked like someone might try and kick off were with three mouthy pricks who looked about 15 near prospect centre, and some polish clit on hessle road
@RED PK184 I lived in holderness road area, and now live in the west near hawthorn avenue, and can see it has its problems like many cities, but its definately not as bad as people make it out to be. Very quiet city and friendly city with normal issues. For note ive lived here for the whole 18 years of my life.

@@harrisondean6474 I live on Anlaby Road... I can't even light a cigarette without being begged for a spare (as if I keep "spares"). There's litter everywhere, no one cleans up after their dogs, and the amount of vandalism is unreal. The local pharmacy needs a security guard because the meth addicts get rough, and the shops are constantly having their stock stolen by shoplifters. Loads of the shops in town have closed down, and street sellers are leaving. All this WITHOUT mentioning the spice zombies and alcoholics. Hull is going to the dogs.

Regardless of his undoubted talents as a poet, Philip Larkin clearly didn't know Hull as well as he thought he did: "Here domes and statues, spires and cranes cluster" Spires would have difficulty 'clustering' in Hull, because though there are quite a number of steeples, there is only one single, solitary spire in the city (St Mathew Church, corner of Saner Street & Boulevard, near Anlaby Road flyover.)

While checking Hull as a destination I noticed Sheffield as a pretty cheap & safe place. Maybe sheffield is my next destination.
The whole UK / Ireland trip took me 35 days and included Belfast, Londonderry, Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny, (in Ireland) - flying to Glasgow, then Edinburgh, Newcastle, York, Hull, Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, Birmingham, Oxford, Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Salisbury, Southhampton, Brighton, Cambridge and London. You may want to check other places. I will put the videos on the channel over time - probably one UK/Ireland video every 2-3 weeks and may show the route on a website for better navigation. It was a bit faster travel in order to cover most places. A good tourist area is flying to London and do trips to Bath/Salisbury (maybe even Stonehendge) and Brighton/Cambridge as well for something different. Depends also on the weather
My current belief is that London is not reflecting real GB, like New York does not reflect the US. Anyway, London is too expensive for a convenient week stay and too much "multicultural" for me.

Man, everyone from hull in this comment section is a cynical bastard...our town isnt shit, grow up. One of the best benifits of hull is everything is within walking distance...legit, if you want to go shopping center, bowling, arcade, seaside, nature preserve, docks, university, high streets, cinema, its all within one hourswalk from our town centre, trust me, this town is meant to be walked around in, I have worked many times in London and manchester and thats one comfort i feel is lost in a bigger city. Also the north has cooplands...which is hands down better than greggs as a bakery, so win win.
Seaside - within one hour walk from Hull city centre? I can only assume that you mean Hessle Foreshore - it's a bit generous describing that as 'seaside' though, and it would be a brisk walk indeed to get there from the centre of Hull in on hour!

Is the best way to get to Hull by public transportation from Doncaster Sheffield Airport? From Leeds??? I found no international airport in Hull.
I went from Leeds with the megabus. Most bus connections seem to go through Leeds. More expensive train options go to York and Sheffield + further for sure. You may want to check rome2rio.com for options and trainline for train times & prices. York is worth a visit and I also liked Liverpool on the other side. I didn't manage to go to Doncaster / Sheffield yet I read Sheffield is also OK to check out for a day. Hull was more an unplanned stop for me due to booked out places in Leeds while I wanted to go from York to Manchester/Liverpool. All worked out well in the end though Hull is a bit out of the way and not on the typical tourist route there in Yorkshire
Humberside Airport is just over 20 miles outside of Hull. That is the closest airport to Hull.

I have filmed some 20+ videos on my UK trip. There are more coming to the channel. I'd recommend starting from Glasgow, Edinburgh going to Newcastle and York and then West to Liverpool, maybe Manchester but surely a quick trip to Chester from Liverpool. Then it's possible to check out so many other places, even Wales (Cardiff) etc.. Bristol was cool etc.. The videos aren't travel recommendations - more unfiltered impressions so viewers can decide if and where to go or simply virtually visit these places
Whatever you do avoid trains, we've officially got the worst service in the country, loads of cancellations, and rickety old train, buses are definitely the best, try stagecoach to Hull interchange

I'll hopefully remember to visit these places for another time. The walk was pretty much unplanned which kind of shows. Viewers here who read the comments and happen to visit Hull will find these suggestions useful. Thanks for watching!

0:23 - 0:30 and many more places, there are tall poles with numerous cameras on them. This is so fabulous! Wonder if they allow people in nearby Condos/Apartments/Flats to rent a spot on a pole to observe their own installed camera! This is a great concept! The finishing touches are being made to a stunning new memorial to Hull people killed during raids by German aircraft in the two World Wars.
The globe-shaped sculpture in Paragon Street in the city centre features the names of the fallen on a series of metallic ash tree leaves circling the memorial.
It has been funded by donations to the Hull People's Memorial charity, which operates a shop and a mini-museum in Whitefriagate.

Mr Brigham said the memorial was the charity's attempt to finally honour those citizens who died in Hull during the two conflicts.
It was originally earmarked for a site in Queen Victoria Square but was switched to Paragon Street after a re-think triggered by the extensive public realm works ahead of Hull's year as the 2017 UK City of Culture.

The bad memories are the reasons why I moved away from my place of birth and eventually England. Whitefriargate needs some big investment, ever since M&S closed down its been a very dreary, depressing street. The homelessness is getting out of hand and are sleeping rough in most of the unoccupied shop doorways (Although I bet this isn't much different in other Northern cities). Would love to walk Boris down the high streets in Hull to show him what this government is causing.
@@civil86able Completely agree. Especially in regards to the lack of foreigners. It really needs a big influx of multiculturalism and tourism. But with the current state of the city its hard to see why any foreigners would want to come. Big change is needed if its going to compete with the other major northern cities in regards to attracting foreign people just to visit the city let alone live/work here. There has been some positive changes e.g. fruit market/marina which is a real cultural hub of the city now but in terms of the main city centre high streets there's huge lack of interesting shops. Its a very fragmented city which is the real problem, there are nice parts but as a whole its miles away from competing with the likes of Manchester, Newcastle, Leeds etc.
Hull is more noticably EAST of York. Yes it's also south of York, but so are 4 of the other 5 cities in Yorkshire, (excluding only Ripon.) Apart from Hull, all the other Yorkshire cities apart from Hull (Bradford, Leeds, Ripon, Sheffield and Wakefield) are all West of York.
If you drive down spring bank it’s like being in a foreign country .Not a single English shop to be seen!
Actually Hull isn't in East Yorkshire. Kingston upon Hull is a city and borough, which means it's a county in its own right.

Hull is a great place to visit, loads of history, fantastic museums (which are free!), good places to eat, and pretty safe - even the weather is not too bad, Sheffield, for instance, gets twice the rain we do! Some people need to spread their wings and try living in other places, it helps you appreciate what’s good about Hull.

..You missed out the Graffiti adorning the buildings approaching Blundells corner on Beverley road. Particularly the Youth centre opposite the Hull Daily Mail building. That says it all..

My comment about Beverley was a 'windup', I lived in Kingston upon Hull from 1960, I relocated to the outskirts in 1978, I worked in Kingston upon Hull until 1996. Not a bad place really but the character has changed, not a criticism, just a personal observation.

I'm not attempting to berate you but I'm from a different generation who find it difficult to understand and/or accept the millennium, cosmopolitan society for whom you appear to be a Standard bearer.
Please consider that when I came to live in Kingston upon Hull, it was the largest white fish port in the UK. Grimsby was the largest Herring port in the UK.
Kingston upon Hull was the most bombed city (after London) during WW2 and was only mentioned by name by Dr, Goebbels, the NAZIs minister of propaganda.
When I came to Hull there were Trolleybuses travelling up and down Jameson Street.when I came to Hull, there was a Paddle steamer ferry across the Humber, no Bridge.
There used to be Trawlers unloading their catches upon the Fishdocks that were extremely busy with the Vibrant community.
