  • In this video I harvest the taro that I have grown in my aquaponics system. I also explain why Growing the taro is not ideal in a small aquaponics system. It would ideally need a larger grow bed in order to grow the best. But it s still nice to grow and definitely tastes good.

    I'd like to go back in time and ask for all those beautiful leaves 🤤
    We make laing from dried taro leaves. It's a mushy mess but it's my favorite Philippine veggie dish

      No I don't think so, after mine grew to a good size I cut the stems off and it continued to grow well.

    Leaves are delicious. Sad to see you throw them away.

      How do you usually prepare/use the leaves?

      @@vonponics You can make Lau Lau with it. It is a Hawaiian dish where you wrap chunks of salted pork belly or pork butt, and pieces of butterfish (black cod) with the taro leaves. Typically you can wrap it with 2-4 layers of the leaves to make it sturdy. Then you can wrap with parchment paper or aluminum foil, and steam it for a while.
      There's a whole bunch of recipes online for it. It's pretty good. Cooked taro leaves taste very similar to spinach.

    We always end up either wanting to never see what we're harvesting again... or reconsidering and saying "wellll, maybe just one or two after all...?"

    Could you set up a secondary rudimentary grow bed outside to grow the taro in?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that is an option.
      I would basically set up a separate grow bed not connected to the aquaponics system. And I would use waste water from the aquaponics system to put in that grow bed. Basically the stuff from my filters that I put either in a mineralization tank or a compost brewer.
      However I am limited to do that since the rest of the garden is pretty much being used, for the fruit trees and my moms garden.
      So is is hard to do as of now, but you never know.

      I am not sure. But I am pretty sure there are videos you can find on growing taro in a colder climate.

    What PH do you maintain it?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to keep the ph between 6.5 and 7.5.

    • @DaudLa
      @DaudLa 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the recommended ph is 50-5.5 for taro. So i have been keeping mine t 5.5 this few months

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaudLa I have the taro in my aquaponic system which has fish in it. So I have to take into account the ph that the fish need.
      Between 6.5 and 7.5 is ideal for most plants and the fish, as well as the beneficial bacteria.
      If you have it as a split system than you can regulate the specific pH required for the specific plants that you are growing.
