It would be great to see the 1/12th scale figures back in the range - I do not recall ever seeing these kits in New Zealand, so I missed out back in the 1970s.
Interesting stuff. Airfix aren't my first or second choice for a lot of reasons (very expensive compared to other brands, poor quality control), but seeing how kits are designed is always interesting. Hopefully the Bucc coming in harder plastic will fix the quality control issues I run into, it seems no two Airfix kits build the same with each having slightly different fit and issues.
Yes, the fit issues, soft plastic and occasional poor quality control have put me off Airfix's newer kits a bit, but I still like buying some of the Vintage Classics for the nostalgia hit. Great video though. Thanks for posting it.
I think a lot of it depends on whether the factory are rushing. If the cooling or pressure isn't right that can affect things down the line. We spoke about this, and one of the problems was end cost. The more people that touch the sprues the more the final cost will be so sometimes things slip through the cracks. * ahem* like the short shots on the sea fury.
this sort of thing is always interesting, thank you for the vid. I think Airfix has a huge deficit to make up in quality of production but most people in UK just don't want to hear that. Hopefully the Buccaneer in 1/48 will showcase how much the company has improved? Their new 1/24 Spit will be benched against Tamiya's 1/32 offering; just being 'big' won't be enough given the rep the Typhoon (which I have) and the Hellcat have for poor mould quality and poor fit.
During the casual chats around the room it seems like they took a good look at the Tamiya spit. Looking at in it person the only fit problem that might present itself is just fore of the canopy, but the build might have been done in a hurry to show us. I agree with you. They have been lagging behind for years, but I got the impression that there is a lot of passion in the design team. The kits have been improving at a steady rate and I hope they continue to build up the quality.
I wish that any plastic Kit modelling company would start creating cool train models in a bigger scale. I would pay quote some money to have some Iconic Steam engines in 1:48 scale or bigger. All you get for Trains is stupid war realted stuff in 1:35 scale. Please Airfix give me the Mallard, Flying Scottsman or anything in 1:48th scale or bigger!
Yes with all the wide variety of model kit types ever made - cars, airplanes, tanks, ships, dinosaurs, knights, monsters, etc - its odd that plastic models of commercial trains never took off other than a few odd kits here and there. It seems it would be a very rich domain for a model company to explore. And personally I would love to have a 4-8-8-4 Union Pacific Big Boy in 1/48 myself!
From the discussions I had, it's the packaging that's the killer, I think I remember rightly that the buccaneer is tooled in the uk ( because of the container problems ) and the tool is similarly priced. The price of the packaging however is the problem in the UK.
The research is not always that good. Hornby are producing a Railway Operating Division locomotive in khaki when they were only black or grey. They are just copying others that made the same mistake.
Unfortunately Airfix seem to have a team that are not typical of their customers. If they just asked the model buyers what they wanted, in what scale and then produced the the favourites then they would be on a winner everytime. Your talk of the Buccaneer speaks volumes. It's not my cup of tea, so I won't be buying either.
It's a lot more complex than people think. From what I gather they will look for gaps in the market as well as asking whether a certain kit fits the brand. At the end of they day they want to make money, and what someone thinks will sell may not actually do well.
@@lpjmodels That is why they need to talk to their buying public. Their are a lot of Tanks that are not available, Cruiser Mk1, MK2 etc. Good Matildas or Valentines. But there are so many Tigers on the market, who's buying them? How many have Dragon released? I want all the British WW2 Tanks in 1.35 scale. Can I buy them from Airfix? No. They are missing a trick.
