Mary, another hint...if you have a delicate die that does not cut, put bubble wrap packing between the plate and the cardstock with the die on top of that and then your other plate. I save all the bubble wrap envelopes that come in the mail and use those. It works perfectly! Great and is free
I LOVE those white microfiber cloths from Dollar Tree! And they must must be white and from auto! I’ve always used them as a cloth to wipe my makeup brushes on in between colors, usually with a spritz of brush cleaner in the center of the fold. (I sit with it folded on my lap while I do my makeup) I believe I have 3 of these so I always have a clean one available. Plus, I’ll use a clean, dry corner to wipe away any of the eyeshadow or mascara that may have gotten away from me. These cloths are really SO soft! One is now immediately moving to my craft room! Thanks, Mary!!
Thank you so much for these ideas! that cloth is amazing and I need to go get some more. After I thought that, I went into my stash and have like 3 more new ones. haha
Love your ideas and especially that they work. Everything in life is so expensive and sometimes you can’t even find what you’re looking for, but you still make it possible for the beginner to do art with style. I always learned something new. This is a new hobby for me and the benefits are amazing as far as mental health and overall attitude adjustment comes easily
Hi Mary! Thanks for sharing! I love the look of the coloured blending brushes, but I have a heap of black-handled ones that are perfectly fine, so what I did was use Washi Tape to mark the colours of the brushes! So a simple glance at the tape, shows me what colour the brush was used for! Made life a bit easier! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for sharing. Awesome finds. When they had a clean out at my work I managed to snag about eight boxes of transparencies. Eventually they threw nothing out without passing it by me first, I got some great card stock, out of date business cards that I was able to use on Christmas tags. 😉
As your title clearly said “ alternative craft products”………that’s clearly what you share!!! I am always looking for item comparable to the high priced crafting supplies. You shared some good ideas ……..definitely helpful🥰
Hi Mary!!! Love this informative video! The various mats is a definite game changer & the alcohol inks pricing is fabulous! Thanks so much for taking your time to do this for us!!! YOU ROCK! So blessed by you sweet soul!!! So grateful for you!!!
I discovered yesterday for my big shot i replaced both my acrylic plates with cutting mats and just used a 110pound sheet of cardstock as a shim and it cut perfectly. Completely surprised me. Possibly for really intricate dies i might try a metal shim.... but pretty happy with the results. Also if your cutting mat starts bowing or warping, heat it with your heat gun and it will go back to normal again.

Your video is so helpful!! I am super excited to get the self healing mat (what an awesome idea, btw) and the microfiber cloth. I’m going to also have to give those alcohol inks a try, especially at that price point. I really appreciate you doing these types of videos. I find them to be invaluable. I enjoy your sense of humor too :) You are such a blessing to me, Mary!
While you're in the automotive section, get an artificial chamois (like The Absorber) which is the same thing as Lawn Fawn's Stamp Shammy at a fraction of the price.
Mary, another option for cutting mats for the BigShot, is a Fiskars self-healing cutting mat..2 layers put together as the layer that takes the cutting abuse. I made mine several years ago, and just last week bid it goodbye...tearfully. :-) It served me well. I just cut 2 new layers from the $10 Fiskars mat from Walmart. Of course I "stole" the idea from someone else on TH-cam, so I can't take the credit. Love your channel!
I was at my local scrapbook store and they wanted $71 for 10 blender brushes.!!! So I found the ones you got from Amazon and they work wonderful so thank u
@Mary Polanco the brushes were from picket fence. I almost fell over when I saw the price. I thought there has got to be something else. So my husband suggested Amazon. Well I was so happy to find the ones you had used in your video. I am thrilled. That leaves a whole whoppin $52 to spend on something else. Thank u for all your comparisons. And all your hard work.
I purchased those cutting mats awhile back to use with my Cuttlebug since they no longer make the plates for it. You just make your normal sandwich combo, just substituting the mat for the B plate. It works great. It is extending the life of my Cuttlebug, I was going to have to replace it when my acrylic plates broke but now I will be able to keep using it.
There is a UK firm called Scrappy Cat who make plates to fit machines including the Cuttlebug and are reasonably priced. I don't know how much shipping would be but if you want some plastic plates too you could check it out.
@@jalh3 I’ve been using self healing mats since my acrylic plates broke. When my mats start warping, you can flatten them using an iron! I place a pillowcase over the mat and press my iron for a few seconds over it. The cuts in the mat heal and it flattens

💡💡💡. Poster board ? Seriously ? Like cheap poster board ! Yay ! I wanted something I can play with the alcohol paints on. I wanted to be able to cut a 3x4.5 inch section and maybe glue that to a card if I like the results. I mostly use acrylic fabric paints bc I don't "paint". Rather I just throw paints at a surface and move them around in a very " abstract" manner. Sometimes I'm so pleased with my art that I want to share it. 💡 Poster board.. who knew ! Before investing a ton of money into alcohol ink on cards I have gone over TH-cam videos and the internet finding all the info I can for alternative uses and "hacks". Thanks bunches for this video ! 🙋 Nana in se OK usa
The blower tool I found at Daiso for 1.50 same size as Ranger. It's labeled as a camera cleaner or something like that. The brushes Dollar store use a punch put the color on glue to the head and coat with clear nail polish if you like. Diaso also carries foil origami paper for cheap I use it over white card stock. Dollar store carries the mini cutting mats too. Look in the sewing section at hobby lobby they also have them for a couple bucks. I'm not big on online shopping. Prefer to buy in store. Walmarts another source for cutting mats
The blower tool I use I get from the baby section at Walmart for $1! it's what parents use to suck the snot out from the baby. Works pretty well. Also, I bought a pack of 4 of those blending brushes from my local Dollar tree and put washing tape on the handles in the color of the ink so I know what brush to grab from my stash to match the ink.
If you are using a big shot machine you can literally just swap the cutting mat for one of the big shot cutting plates, or both if you choose too. I put a big shot cutting plate on the bottom with the cutting mat on top & dies facing upward, this works great for me but obviously you do what you find works best.
Hey Mary...The We R Memory keepers glitter vaccuum is USB rechargeable not batteries. Also wanted to let you guys know to keep an eye out for sales and coupons. My daughter and I both got ours for $10 at Michaels I believe...it might have been Joann's. It was such a good deal I almost thought they were going to tell us it was a mistake and we couldn't get them. Haha
Thank you for all your helpful tips!! I have been using the self healing mat for my die cutting. I have the large Gemini and I use the Gemini Jr plates, my sandwich is the bottom plate, the self healing mat and the top plate, I run my die and paper thru and it cuts every time. So glad I found out about the self healing cutting mat trick, saves me from constantly buying those cutting plates. Alcohol inks! Going to put the on my Amazon wish list right now!! Thank you again!!
Hi Mary, QUESTION: Regarding the alcohol inks, can they be used to refill alcohol markers? Have you ever done this, and if so which more affordable alternative did you use? Thank you for all of you artsy help.
I have not done this but you might find someone on YT that has. When mine run out I am likely to purchase a comparable Copic refill but I haven't come up against that yet.
I have been wondering about those alcohol inks! Glad to see this👍🏼 I’ve always appreciated your money saving videos❤️. Glad they are selling self healing Mats cut to size, I bought a large one and cut it down to size myself. Love my ladybug too🐞You rock Mary💪🏼🙌🏼👍🏼🌈
I use 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol as my blending solution for alcohol inks. It’s very cheap on Amazon compared to the branded blending solution. It works the same as the branded.
Hello there, very nice alternatives for our studio. I particularly liked the alcohol inks. I've been checking around too for all crafty alternative because as we all know, we have an expensive hobby or business. Just a thought, rather than waste the inks on the cloth, what I have discovered is using every bit, I cut and envelopes from white copy paper or cardstock and use the brushes to color the white paper and cardstock, blending a few colors or just one. Then I glue the envelope in my journal or the front of a card, that's what I call utilizing your supplies and saving money, just a though. Thanks for you time reviewing the above products, I found these quite informative and will be ordering a few of the supplies, i.e, alcohol colors and blower, wink.
LOVE your idea not to waste the inks. I always have intentions to do that but forget. Thank you so much for the reminder! YAY! Love saving money and stuff.
Thanks for showing the lady bug vacuum. I went straight to Amazon and ordered one. I had to get the green, but that is fine. I had one of those days where I kept getting embossing powder everywhere. I was an accident waiting to happen.
Yes, why are we all having to purchase new plates? Love this topic. I just paid 350 bucks to take Anna Griffen's create class for scrapbooking. It was gorgeous! However, it came with these beautiful 12" dies. I warped and cracked all my plates cutting these out. I worked out by trial and error how to make a small STRONG base plate and it works soooooooo great. No warping, no cracking and it was free. Have you seen Jennifer Mcguire's video about using the double-sided plates by Gemini? Brilliant! I'm definitely getting those. Just spent 50 bucks on new plates, though....geesh. ❤🧡💛
I purchased a small vacuum from Amazon. Just a black and white one. A little more $ than the ladybug one and I love it. I use it all the time. It picks up small bits of paper as well. Really impressed. The mats are something I would be willing to try but I have the larger Gemini. So I’m not sure if it will hold up. If I was to purchase from Amazon a plate for my large Gemini it would cost me 29.99$ cad. But I purchased a few from Craft Stash in the UK for 13.99$ cad. Plus I got free shipping cause my order was over 100$ cad. Imagine. So I bought 2. 😳. I’m not an alcohol user but those seem like great deals. Thank you for sharing. Great video. Love these.
I'm always looking for a good deal! I've never tried alcohol inks because they are so expensive. Also, the blending brushes! I may have to treat myself to those 2 items. Thanks, Mary!
Another great and informative video Mary! I bought an inexpensive blower tool and I didn't like it. I broke down and spent the money on the Tim Holtz blower tool and I think it works much better for me. I assume the mini vac will pick up embossing powders, is that correct?
Very helpful video. FYI here in Canada the alcohol ink set is $35.99🤦. I did however order the ladybug vacuum, do you know if it will suck up embossing powder?
I would calculate the price per ounce, and then evaluate how many of those twenty-four colors I would actually use before investing is a mega pack of alcohol ink. 😉
05:47 - There's actually an under-appreciated die cutting / embossing machine that doesn't require a bazillion shims. Instead, the machine has a mechanical knob that lets you adjust the height of the rollers themselves. It used to be sold as the "Crossover" machine by Tattered Lace. Now it looks like "Crossover II" is being sold by a brand called "Crafter's Edge". I have the original Crossover machine and I love it. :) One of the benefits of not using a bazillion shims is that you end up cutting into the clear top plate - meaning that you can see if the paper is fully cut through without having to disassemble the sandwich first. Main downside of this machine: it's more expensive than most other die cutting machines out there.
Someone told me about that recently and it looked amazing. I asked the company if they would let me try it out for all of you but haven't heard back yet. It is so cool that you don't have to have a gazillion plates.
Mary, another hint...if you have a delicate die that does not cut, put bubble wrap packing between the plate and the cardstock with the die on top of that and then your other plate. I save all the bubble wrap envelopes that come in the mail and use those. It works perfectly! Great and is free

Thank you so much! YAY! I love these so much!
I use 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol as my blending solution for alcohol inks. It’s very cheap on Amazon compared to the branded blending solution. It works the same as the branded.
Yes to this! I have used 99% and showed it one of my money savings videos. So great
Hello there, very nice alternatives for our studio.
YAY! Love that little lady! lol
I can't wait to check out her video; so helpful. Yes the need to change plates so much is egregious. Glad we are finding alternative solutions.
Love these.
Right?? It's like the most "non-needed" needed thing in my craft room. hahaha Thank you for all the shares in here!
I'm always looking for a good deal! I've never tried alcohol inks because they are so expensive. Also, the blending brushes! I may have to treat myself to those 2 items. Thanks, Mary!
YAY! I'm so glad this was helpful. I love those alcohol inks and such a great way to save money to play with them
Just found you! Awesome video! Thanks for the money saving tips!!!
I'm so happy that this was helpful to you! Thank you for letting me know
Loved the video!!! May I ask where you got the plastic and magnetic shims?
Cracked me up when you said you added "first born" 🤣😂🤣
Hahaha...thanks Susan! :)
Another great and informative video Mary! I bought an inexpensive blower tool and I didn't like it. I broke down and spent the money on the Tim Holtz blower tool and I think it works much better for me. I assume the mini vac will pick up embossing powders, is that correct?
Great to know Lori, thanks so much! You aren't the first person to say this in the thread so I'll have to watch out for it.
That Happy die! Please let me know where you bought it? Great ideas! Always enjoy your tips, tricks, hacks and cost savings!
I could not find it linked separately because I believe it came in one of the Catherine Pooler's Sursee kits. I'm so sorry. :(
I got the ladybug mini vac at my dollar plus store for $4
Oooh great deal! LOVE IT!
Very helpful video. FYI here in Canada the alcohol ink set is $35.99🤦. I did however order the ladybug vacuum, do you know if it will suck up embossing powder?
Yes it will, that is what im showing in the video actually. Yay
I would calculate the price per ounce, and then evaluate how many of those twenty-four colors I would actually use before investing is a mega pack of alcohol ink. 😉
That microfiber cloth is great. All the others I have tried stick to my fingers and i hate the feel.
OMGoodness....I CAN"T STAND the feeling of the others ones when my hands are dry (which is all winter long) lol. I'm glad I"m not alone
They have self healing mats at Dollar Tree and they work just fine too.
Yes this is new info to me and I can't wait to go track some down
