Later he made one double century and this would have been second one and being captain Rahul dravid should have notified to sachin before declaring. Everyone can be wise in hindsight and say that the match finished in 4 days but that was not known when Dravid declared. Imran made a similar declaration when Miandad was at 280 against India. At the end of the day a team plays the game to win, in that process if there are individual milestones that is a bonus, not the other way round.
