    The UAZ van at the start of the video is an UAZ 452, nicknamed 'Bukhanka', which means loaf of bread, after its shape. I own one, converted to a camper. I can tell you that these vehicles are at least equal to a Defender 90 in difficult and heavy terrain. Fantastic vehicle, but needs a lot of mechanical attention.

    Thank you for another great video. When we are in Russia in the '90s these UAZ vans were everywhere - one dark winter night I found a man passed out drunk in a bank of snow. I just saw him in the corner of my eye - he was comatosed! I had a friend call an ambulance and a UAZ turned up as the ambulance. By that time I had managed to get this guy up and he kinda liked my place - he didn't want to go to the hospital. Fortunately, the abundance drivers knew how to deal with him. Keep safe guys!

    Awww...that's a great shame as it looking such a stunning place 😢 The midges would have driven me mad !! Did they bite ?? Like the routine of sweeping the porch step before having to climb into the camper 👍 Must be great having the drone to send up and scout the trail ahead...very handy 👍 Looked flipping windy on that climb and shame to have missed out. Look forward to the next episode ✊👊

What’s the name of the app you use for overlanding camping spots? 3. Which rear diff guard have you fitted - any recommendations? Is it iOverlander?

    UAZ-452, Nickname "Bukhanka" (Bread of a brick form). Live axles on a leaf springs and a wheelbase of just 2.3m makes it an offroad monster!
    The most hilarious fact is that it was widely used as an Ambulance in Soviet union (and still is in some regions).
    My brother was transported to hospital for a treatment of appendicitis with one of these.
    "It was the worst experience in my entire life" he said.

      @@leighdearle5965 I found the camper tour! pretty cool stuff. I was just wondering if you changed your mind about some things, or would've done things differntly now that you've been traveling for a while! I caught on to the smaller wheels ;P

      @leighdearle5965 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steinar.offroad if you've watched a few of the videos maybe you saw that unfortunately a few years ago in Portugal we had a serious accident.
      So this is actually the second build that we've done on the same model car.
      We learnt a lot from the first build and think we almost got it spot on 😉
      One thing we would never do again is run wheel spacers with a heavy load.

    • @steinar.offroad
      @steinar.offroad 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leigh Dearle now that’s a good tip! And I saw that video! Good thing you didn’t have the camper with you at that moment. Didn’t quite realise the first truck was a goner until this comment (I’ve only started watching recently so I haven’t watched everything chronologically). I’ll take a better look at the build episodes to see if I can figure out what choices you made (differently) 😜. Have a good day, have fun and the best of luck on your journey! Maybe we’ll see each other on the trail one day (when poor student life is over and I can start building). Great inspiration!

      Yep, back in 2007 on a 2 night trip from Almaty where we stayed at Charyn Canyon too, another amazingly stunning spot. No way of checking for certain as there definitely wasn't a drone with us, but the camp we used was right by the water at the end of an inland track where you could turn left or right, so I'm guessing it was the same place. Must've been close though. Epic place & nice seeing it from the air 👍

    You can get a UAZ Bukhanka registered in the EU. As far as I know there's even a Russian-run company in Germany who import them and do a few technical upgrades to meet the demands of the western customers. I first saw these cars in Iceland, where they seemed to have been quite popular some twenty years ago. And - yes - it's still the same model, if you do your engineering right in the first place, there's no need for a new model every two years ;-)

      Then we hot spot the laptop from the phone for upload.
      Sometimes it's hard but we try to plan ahead to be in reception for upload days or even upload several videos and pre schedule them to release on TH-cam if we know we'll be out of range.

      Hello Joe
      No connection problems as long as I keep the truck in my line of sight through the camera screen.
      We do this a lot, Steph drives and I fly around.
      I've had it up to 500m from the truck.
      I did nearly lose it once flying in Morocco. We were on a mountain trail and I flew behind a mountain and completely lost the signal.
      Lucky the drone stayed still until we came around the corner and I could see it again.

    I've never tried to operate a drone though I am an ex RAF pilot so I suppose I ought to be able to do it. I am full of admiration though for the quality of all your videos and what prompted me to comment on this one in particular was the drone camera shots of GrizzlyNbear on those uneven tracks. It seems that it would be quite difficult to maintain the drone in a steady position relative to the moving vehicle and especially to move it in the opposite direction from that of the car. Congratulations to both of you for your terrific ranges of skills and knowledge as well as your bravery in venturing so often into the completely unknown and making such great videos as you do so.

    I too have thought about a UAZ as a camper though I doubt the rules in New Zealand would let me import one.

    I truly hope I’m wrong, but you guys are taking so many unnecessary risks going to these decrepit countries. I see you possibly being kidnapped by some extremist group.
