    here is the difference, and you touched on this in your apt description of american wrestling (and this was my experience too when i wrestled), the number one priority in american wrestling in physical.... strength, toughness, stamina... it's all about things being hard and pushing your limits.... not the russians... their concern is NINETY PERCENT technique.....
    and here is the thing about strength and conditioning... everyone can get relatively strong and relatively conditioned the additional HOURS you can spend per day gaining that physical edge over other people will only really amount to being 5 or 8% stronger than another person who is not working nearly as "hard"
    but guess what... a superior technique absolutely wipes its ass with that 5% strength and conditioning advantage...
    here you train every day and beat up your body... there, they train technique AND RECOVER...
    and this is with having shittier food than ours, more stress and a harder life...
    these are just my observations, but i doubt SEVERELY that i'm wrong

    I think the big difference is that in America, wrestling is PURELY competition. Nobody thinks about it as a hobbyist sport, it’s looked at as Something that’s grindy and tough-not that it isn’t tough- year round. Other countries: Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Iran, etc. take a more hobbyist approach, like how a lot of people look at boxing/Jiu jitsu here in the states. People in those countries can pursue amateur careers as wrestlers like people do here with boxing, Jiu jitsu, mma, etc. but here, wrestling is reserved for school age people and the very elite, so people can rarely compete/train actual wrestling outside of those settings. In part, the hard, grindy system reserved for the elite can be credited for how well we do on the international circuit but I think that having clubs all over where people can train/compete year round-even as complete amateurs at any age-is ideal to helping us get even better. The other countries have clubs everywhere for everyone, why shouldn’t we?

    I've been fortunate enough to train at a wrestling club with a diverse crowd from other countries. the biggest edge I've noticed from Russians/Kyrgz/Ukraine wrestlers is advanced setups-techniques and little details that makes everything more efficient. Not much energy wasted trying to outwork/grind your opponent

    I aint no specialist, but something that strikes me as quite fairly obvious is that American wrestlers appear to have different bodies to Russians (and east european wrestlers in general). The forearms for example, Russian and East Europeans have massive, Popeye like, forearms. Furthermore their upper bodies on average seem more v-shaped and their muscles more ripped and less round and watery than Americans. I also think they've got bigger necks. There is some difference in the physical training for sure

    Thank you. You just listed the reasons why I did not take wrestling in high school.
    I had friends on the wrestling team, and I could sometimes beat them at wrestling because I was a fatty, and they simply could not work around a weight difference. This gave me the impression that wrestling (and all martial arts in general) was just about how physically strong you were, and I was not interested in that. I have since learned that this is not the case, and am now very interested in martial arts.

    I agree in the aspect Russians are better than americans over all. It is about technique but they have better fluidity in there moves. Alot of the moves the americans are taught are much more stagnent. Russians look smooth because there is less transitioning in the moves. Another reason is they lift and do strength conditioning much more specific to wrestling. They do bodyweight lifts and carries, Strenght bands and kettle bells.. then have a beer in the sauna to relax after hard work

    I like the idea, but if you can't preform that technique when you're tired then it's worthless. I'm a technical wrestler, but that's why we grind so hard. "1st period goes to the guy with the better technique, 2nd period to the guy with better cardio, and the 3rd period goes to the guy with the most heart.".. I've seen guys smashing their opponent, and then get pinned; or give up 5 takedowns to lose. We grind to break out opponent.

    Its their COACHING and TRAINING. US has the better raw athletes and talent. Jorda Burroughs was the most explosive athlete in wrestling and could take down anyone in the last minute. The Eastern Europeans can't necessarily train for that explosive power but they did a good job but Burroughs also did win Gold against Russians and in Worlds. Im sure many of Dagestans best wrestling coaches would love to come here and train for salary and career. Disagree? The world studies most of the power lifting techniques from the EE for the last few decades now wrestling needs to catch up. US talent and EE Coaching is win, win.

    Do you think we'd have a better showing if US high schools and colleges wrestled freestyle or greco exclusively?
    ie. Mango and Coleman forewent NCAA competition and were obviously better versed in freestyle than for example Askren and Fay who'd both dominated in NCAA folkstyle.

  • @iWrestleUSA
    @iWrestleUSA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would help if kids that wrestled in the USA only learned Greco/Freestyle. For kids growing up and doing folk style and having to transition over later in the development of their wrestling can make a big difference when it comes down to being an Olympic Champion.

  • @Spartanets1

    And it applies not only to wrestling, but every other sport and even way of life and politic. Look at russians hockey players, they play much softer and technical than americans. Americans are just bullies. It is about mentality. Americans invented the foe in their heads, they allways thinks that russians are very agressive thoug strong bad guys, so we (americans) need to train harder and be more agressive and thougher. In reality when both team meet each other in sports - russians just do sport, softly and technicaly, but americans allways takes it to personaly and try to be bullies to prove that they are much thougher than russians. Years of propaganda has left their marks..

  • @GBDazzler
    @GBDazzler 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Too much emphasize on agression and pace rather than skill and technique, hence whenever you watch americans they look very stiff. Then look at the russians, Iranians, azerbeijani's, uzbeks, kazaks, ukraine, bulgaria, they are all very technical, relaxed and still have unbelievable power.

    I agree, technique is key. I wrestle in high school and am known for my huge muscular arms and hard work, but I lack on technique and experience.. Therefore I lose most of the time to guys that look like they havent eaten for days, but that have better technique

  • @truemanc
    @truemanc 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The best wepon you have in wrestling (or any combat endeavour) is your brain.... I would always say perfect technique and set sequences until they are flawless.... this will take time but will pay off in the end and they will stay with you longer than the 5 sets of reps you did in the gym.

    @kenprimo Thank you for your explanations! I'm a huge fan of both wrestling and MMA. But I think Russian/East European wrestlers are pretty athletic as well (just look at Alexander Karelin!). I just wait what will happen if Russian/East European wrestler start to enter MMA in the same large numbers as the US wrestlers do!

  • @lwcjoe1

    @kenprimo Well, but I think that most US MMA-wrestlers/ex-wrestlers into MMA are not pretty much skilled in BJJ and/or Boxing as well.

  • @bushpilot99
    @bushpilot99 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Dead-on explanation, skill lasts forever. It was the same way up here in Canada when it came to Hockey in the 70's , kids growing up developed their skills by just playing a lot of games, made them tough, fast and strong. International competition we weren't doing the greatest, than in the 80's training strategies started to change and in the 90's skills development was focused more at the junior level. The result. 19 medals in the last 20 years at junior world championships 12 of those gold.

    Well, if post-Soviet wrestlers are even better than US wrestlers - one could just imagine how good Russian/ex-Soviet wrestlers would do in MMA and what impact on MMA would they produce, - if they start to enter MMA world in the same numbers as their US colleaugues do!
    I'm just surprised why there's no such huge influx of Russian/ex-Soviet wrestlers into MMA world!

  • @GBDazzler
    @GBDazzler 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @kenprimo I've been to Iran, and they are more relaxed but they also train like animals the juniors were able to lift 3 times their body weight, and they are also more technical.

  • @takedowns101
    @takedowns101  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ussrwrestling yeah, but their mentality and bodies fit well for the sport today, which is athletic based ability at the moment. Eventually skill will separate whats what as the sport progresses.

  • @GBDazzler
    @GBDazzler 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @region015 Yep, americans are trying to use it all the time hence stiffness. Really america will never be the same again in wrestling as Iran are back when america were at their peak iran was in wars and revolution, russia have more than just one rep that they had in soviet times they have ossetians, chechyans, and dagestani's wrestling for a lot of different countries when they don't make the russian team, iranians are doing this also so the comp is now tougher, hence worse results for usa.

  • @lordjimbo2

    2010 us wrestling got mauled. I have been herein boston working with
    russian wrestlers here since, 1996 russians research and work their techniques by analizing and breaking all parts and sequences down to its initial core, (i.e.) proper stance,footwork, and execution of the series.
    they dont have a go go attitude, its slow and practice the techs slow and they mean slow perfecting technique. so i know what you mean: train smart wrestle smart and practice the technique smart,

    they have a stronger wrestling culture in russia, and state funding at the higher levels. we don't. this is why we don't always see college national champions trying to continue on to the international elite level.
    also, alot of our potential wrestling talent is invested in other sports, like football. there is no football in russia. if you're strong, you do weightlifting or wrestling. those are popular sports there. here, amateur wrestling champions won't even get recognized most places.

This is a popular answer but it's been proven wrong. Currently the best male wrestler in the world is American. The best female is American. The best team is America. So popular answer but still wrong.
