Ddee had like the most impressive run honestly, getting into losers before top 32 and still making Top 8 beating Sonix, Andres, Raflow and Riddles was absolutely insane considering that he wasn‘t even in the Top50 PR Rankings
What an insane tourney, still stuns me how Marss can just show up and win even against a Steve of Onin’s caliber. Also HUGE dub to Aaron taking it over Spargo, not many people can just win over Spargo like that when everyone is counting him out

Would've been cool seeing a Miya segement. Dude beat shuton, light and tweek in a row 3 top ten players then beats dedee and then another top 10 contender in Zomba. That losers run was wild. Wouldve been cool seeing him take it all. Also Neo's game 5 with Acola was intense.

One of the reasons why I REALLY want a new game is to see how acola would do if Steve ends up a top 20-30 character (if thats even possible with his toolkit). While I am not saying acola is carried by Steve, I do think everyone finally has realized that he is by far the best character in the game, so to see consistent top players play smth that isnt blatantly broken is so interesting to me
And shoutout to Marss for always being a blast every twice a year when we see him competing

There’s such a weird disconnect in this community as far as Japan goes. I feel like there’s a lack of eyes on them, so it often feels to the casual viewer like Japan just has random players spawn in and start winning without any work. Compound this view with the fact the two best ones play Steve and Game and Watch (two characters who notoriously lack traditional “fundies” to play), as well as the pride we Americans tend to have about hype vs. lame play styles, and you get a bunch of people who feel like we’re being invaded by skill-less nobodies. I don’t agree, but it’s easy to see why they’re upset.
I agree with you. I love this podcast as much as the next guy, but when they started saying they think Sparg0 is still number one, it kind of shows disrespect to Acola and/or Steve, maybe in the sense of “he’s just carried by Steve, so he’s not actually the best”. It could be a Japan vs. NA mentality too, idk.

He didn’t just win, he beat him NINE games straight the last 2 times they played. Most of them didn’t look close and he had no answers, had to swap to DK and Pythra

He needs to get 1st at pretty much everything until the end of the year and acola also has to flop some events (below 4th is a flop for him imo)

They could’ve talked more about the aCola Neo set but other than that there’s not really anything to talk about there. Once Sparg0 was out no one really thought anyone would beat acola (imo Zomba and Light probably had the best chance but they also lost before getting to him). Spending a long time talking about someone’s underperformance just isn’t necessary, especially when it was losing to Andres and Miya, two very good players. I’ll give you the Noi point tho

Love the show btw, and I know the crew was tired today but would be cool to hear everyones reactions to cool stuff that happens at tournaments instead of just listing them which sometimes happens. Sometimes its just how you ask the question that creates the content. For example: "Neo did well" vs "How about that game 5 heartbreaker tho guys?". I just love hearing your guys's thoughts on hype moments we all know were hype!

There's a HUGE cultural difference in handling pressure between acola and Sparg0 and this is not to take away anything from acola's win but in Japan, kid's are expected to work on their shit from a very young age, both in school and at their home, they have to be on point, tons of responsabilities and that carries over to their adulthood, acola is definitely affected by pressure, when he lost Kagaribi he said he "felt like he let down the entire country" and I don't think its the same for Sparg0, he wants to be the number one, he has been working on that for so long and in the same week he was "Officially" told he was not and then had one of his worst tournament performances while his no 1 rival won the entire thing, he is probably in a hole right now and I truly fear for his mental health.
I seriously hope he's fine and he can bounce back, I truly do, but both as spectator and as a dad, I'm worrying how much damage this thing did, he's just a 17yo kid, If I had this kind of pressure at that age I wouldn't be able to take it but I know he can and I truly hope he has people to support him because god know the internet loves to kick people when they're down.

Every time a mid tier performs well there are people deciding that it was a travesty to not consider them high tier at worst. It's like they can't even fathom the idea of a game where mid tier and up is all viable.

smash 64 took forever and it cut into the talent show time slot and alot of people who had been preparing for the talent for the whole past year didn't even get to perform. Pretty much smash 64 tourneys suck

48:15 Can confirm! I watched all the Tweek sets I could find where he went all Sephiroth and it was by far the best gameplay I have EVER seen with that character! Watching it made me feel the same way I feel when I watch ProtoBanham play Lucina: utter disbelief that the character is even capable of moving the way both of them play their respective character.
If you don't believe me, just know that Tweek got TWO 0 to deaths BACK TO BACK against AK's Snake and didn't have wing for ANY of it! How do you 0TD Snake TWICE (let alone the best Snake in the world!) without even getting clipped by an explosion one time!?

It’s fine to say Sparg0 is the best but the thing is Acola beats everyone 10 times out of 10 atm except for Sparg0. Sparg0 still goes pretty even with Leo, Sonix and Light and is maybe 55 45 with Tweek and Riddles and usually loses to Muteace and Proto, so Sparg0 will probably never be able to match Acola’s consistency
