My First CNC Part! // Hurco CNC

  • I have always been fascinated with manufacturing and making stuff so it is only natural that I'm interested in machining and CNC. Since starting my new job at Reynolds Machinery in Ohio I have been exposed to some pretty awesome machine tools. While at Hurco I was introduced to their "conversational control" and immediately thought: I can do that!
In this video I show a quick overview of my first ever CNC part from start to finish. This was a great learning experience for me and I hope to do more of it in the future. If you've seen some of my prior videos you know I'd like to eventually incorporate machining (maybe even CNC) into my shop. This definitely set the hook!
If you're in the machining world and recognize the benefits of a great control to minimize setups, programming time, and ultimately cycle time - you need to check out Hurco!!!

Like to see the way the big boys play. Interesting showing the tool changes and that the bed moves instead of the spindle. - Chris

was in fabrication years ago and worked with much older milling machines and punch presses, was fun then and has come so far in simplifying the controls. For example I used a SMP program to communicate with my Machine. It would also take the CAD CAM drawings and convert them into the SMP language for the machines to be able to make our parts. I always preferred to do like you just were though in programming at the controls.

Welcome to Ohio. We are up in the NE part where we do lots of 3D printing (Mahoning Valley). Plenty of people trying to network and produce parts for the local hospitals if/when they are needed. You might see what's going on at Wright State as academic-industrial collaborations are taking off in additive manufacturing here.

Glad that you got the chance to play with the "big toys"! I have enjoyed using the smaller home shop CNCs at the maker space, and I have a small CNC for prototyping circuit boards. I think they are as useful as a 3D printer!
It would be interesting to see a comparison of VCarve Pro and the Hurco conversational interface some time.
P.S. I have met some folks from the maker space in Dayton - they seem like really nice folks and I recommend checking out what a membership would add to your sanity until you can get your own shop back up and running.

Wow, I guess those are considered industrial CNCs. A bit different than the X-carve that I hope to get at some point, but cool to see a much more complex device. I'd heard of a 4th axis, but not a 5th. Pretty cool~!

Welcome to the Dayton! You sure picked a great time to move and be locked in your house! Not sure where you're renting, but you might want to look into Forrer Pointe in Kettering for your storage. Their storage units are meant to do stuff in, so you could kill two birds with one stone to store and use your shop stuff! A friend of mine used to rent a big unit there and ran a VW repair business out of it.
