Thanks for the period vid Alan. It's fantastic seeing the cooling towers, rail yards and power stations which were there but gone and nothing more than stories to me in the 90s. What a great "historical" piece. I remember seeing the APT passing Ripley Rugby grounds in Lancaster from the back of a muddy scrum in the early 80s

I managed to see the APT around late '84 at Euston when I was 9. I was shocked to see it "in the real"

I love driving the APT-P. It’s such a beast!
It also really stood out amongst the traction of the time. It was like the first jet amongst piston engine aircraft. My childhood memories of it, were that it featured in an M&S book on railways. It was supposed to be the Train of the Future!

I saw one fly through Stafford back in 1985. I can recommend The Story Of The APT book, you will have even more respect for this project once you've read the fascinating story.
Alan is right, it wasn't a failure. As we know from our TS buying experience, when unrealistic deadlines are set, pressure is placed upon the development team and the product is rushed out before it's ready then the launch will be a disaster. The APT got the trains running well and a set settled down to regular passenger service. However, further investment was needed, we had a very anti-public transport government and the plug was pulled. Defeat was clutched from the jaws of victory.

The drivers could only use the boost setting for up to 20 seconds before the traction motors started to over heat

The experimental version of the APT, built in the early 1970s, had the cab cars filled up with the engine, and the driver would have to listen to a loud BRRRRRRRRRRRR sound

Not sure if it’s linked or not but many Russian aircraft have blue cockpits as it apparently reduces eye fatigue over long periods of time. The principle could be the same for the APT cab.
