Thank you for the tips. I though my vibe was damaged because I have to use it at 9/10 of volume. That gives me a relief. I also found that 6.5 is a sweetspot for some songs with a lot of gain and punch, so the vibe waves dont interfere and cancel the guitar sound. Its great to know that you find it correct. I use mostly speed at 2, so I would try the 7. Thank you,

Ex #1 sounds like the faster "Berkeley" setting that he used for "Hey Baby". I've gotten that also by using the "Vibrato" setting.
But the same Berkeley show, when he played "Hear My Train", it was definitely slower and on the "Chorus" setting.
-If you're ever interested in talking about that, we can break it down to the second you hear it. But generally speaking, it's when he's coming out of his wailing solo, and breaks to the mellow point (5:15) and rolls his volume way down to where there's barely any fuzz, but it's when he's using both wah and Univibe. You can hear the Univibe especially at around 6:30. Love that!
Two of the richest 'vibe shows for me is obviously "Machine Gun" #1 and amazingly, to me at least, was Maui and "Hey Baby". Thick, rich Univibe tone. Something that goes without saying but many don't realize, is how much more pronounced the effect is when you're playing loud! When I play either my half-stack (JTM45) or my old Super Reverb CRANKED, the way it bounces between the speakers and guitar just adds so much to the effect. It's crucial to get those Jimi\Trower sounds where the sympathetic feedback trails the notes - some more than others of course.
Trower's "I Can't Wait Much Longer" is another overlooked great 'vibe example. We all tend to focus on the obvious "Bridge of ...".

Thanks for sharing. The “loud playing” is a good aspect. I’ve played +150 Jimi Hendrix Tribute shows over the past 4.5 years and especially the festival shows where the Plexi gets pushed loud without an attenuator create that great bounce you’re talking about. I think one of the most intense and watery Uni-Vibe sounds I’ve heard of Jimi are the Shokan House takes. Some faster settings…just great for themselves ✌️🎸

Cool video, thanks! In my mind Jimi used the vibrato mode (at quite fast speed) in the studio on the songs: Pali Gap, Hey Baby, Dolly Dagger... while live he only used the chorus mode. But you mentioned that he used as well the vibrato mode live. What would be those examples?

    • @MikelBluni
      @MikelBluni  ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks Manlay for your positive feedback and your interesting input 🙏 In the Isle of Whight clip I’ve shared in this video one can clearly hear how Jimi switched from Chorus to Vibe and then back. You are right there’s hardly something recorded live that clearly sounds like Vibe mode, but I wondered why Jimi intentionally switched back and forth between the modes in that scene. I mean if he always played Chorus, why even touch the switch? To me the Hey Baby/Midnight Lightning clip of the Maui recording is hard to say if it’s not vibe in fact ☮️✌️

@@MikelBluni Thanks for the reply. By the way, since some time ago I observed that there's a possiblility (that I couldn't confirm by pictures), that in the late part of 1970 maybe sometimes he pluged the guitar first into the Univibe instead of the wahwah. It's hard to say how it was exactly connected but this small snippet of the Wight shows that the guitar cable is not going directly into the wah but also neither directly into the Univibe, looks like maybe it's plugged to a female jack that may bifurcate the signal... maybe one side to the univibe and the other side to the rest of the pedals and then to two different Marshalls? It would be nice to investigate that. Clearly on Wight the sound is not so phasey and woshy-woshy as on Maui or Woodstock.

@@ManlaySound Very interesting!!! I’ve heard many people say that he went UV first at the first Fillmore BOG show. I mean in the end Jimi was a state of the art gearhead for his time, so he experimented just like we guys do 😊 I’ll keep the cable routing you mentioned in mind. There is also something like a distributor unit used on the amp directly (I think at Maui). Still not sure if that was just the regular daisy chaining or something else. Another consideration with the vibes compared, this original univibe had a totaly diferent equalization, with more enphasy on the higher register, more highs, more watery. The midnight vibe more emphasy on the high mids. Just slightly diferent. That made huge diference in playing and tone again. The tests were made in a 67 super reverb, a JCM 800 with vintage speakers and a 67 Marshall super bass with original cab and speakers G12H 55hz.

That thing about vibe mode being louder might not translate across all univibe pedals. I have a Dunlop version (the big chrome square shaped one) and the vibe mode is considerably quieter than the chorus mode.
I'd love a univibe with concentric knobs (hope I'm using the correct word).

I actually investigated JH pedals & sounds because ppl wanted me to play JH.
I talk to music industry ppl and they told me to get exactly the right Hendrix tone , would cost me above $10Gs. Because the pedals I need aren’t around anymore and this was about a decade ago. And Jimi also made his own couple pedals or call it upgraded them , which means - what electronic stuff he use to create whatever pedals he was making to his liking.

Wow 😮 You really listened very closely to that. Indeed we hear a change of tone 🎸 Here’s are my assumptions: a) I don’t think that anyone besides Jimi kicked in the UV - we can clearly see that the two camera people on stage at not near the UV; b) the wind caused big problems to the recording. Maybe it was also the reason for the sound to change, as Kramer had to work heavy on it in post production to make it listenable. Maybe filtering out windy noise and adding eq, because the foam around the mics made the recording sound dull, caused what we hear and perceive as the swooshing sound; c) Maybe Kramer added UV intentionally in the post production. I’ve heard that Kramer worked with re-amping after Jimi’s Death, playing his original takes through cabs an re-record - don’t nail me to that info - it’s something Noel Redding told me once 🎸🔥

@@Gimi.Endrics Eddie Kramer has been involved from day one on after Jimi’s death in quite a bunch of posthumously released albums! Maybe he’s been off in between to return with 1997s First Rays…
I’m sure he did the mix for the live recordings of the Maui gig in 1970. It had to be mixed and mastered to make it some kind of listenable for the movie. So yes - I could imagine he experimented with adding stuff and re-recording right after Jimi’s death.

what's the settings- its about 100 bpm ....intensity titrated to taste. That pretty much covers 90% of his mid tempo rock tracks. This isn't a complicated machine here

Univibe by ear to match? Don't understand the great mystery. Never had an issue setting up a vibe

Your videos are amazing. But i saw your volume on 10. And that possibly may be a mistake. Let me explain. I tested a real pristine univibe and like the schematics the original is way under unity gain. In fact there is a drop of volume of about 30%. I compared it to my midnight vibe that does unity volume. The equivalent was 10 on the original vs 7 on volume on my univibe...This changes the whole behavior with whats before and after. If your vibe does unity gain or above unity gain then the results could be off. Unless Jimi's Vibe was tweaked... wich is possible... But originals have a huge drop in volume

That vibe sounds absolutely legit. Vibe is annoying. It’s on par with rotating speaker as coolest sounding modulation, but for me it’s so limiting. All I play with vibe is poor renditions of hendrix songs. Not very creative. Worst possible vibe is the big box Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe. I have spent days on end tweking it to sound like BOG hendrix. If oppoturnity arises, i might buy original for the bragging rights, but at the moment i dont own any vibe and i intent to keep it that way just to focus on creating something on my own. I wonder if anyone feels the same?
