    The reason why people keep on confusing 4C hair is because they think 4C= dry, brittle, frizzy, and unmanageable. So when some gas dry, brittle & dull 3C/4a hair they think it's 4C abs it's SO insulting.

      xshesyourqorqeousxx3 I don’t think you should feel insulted. Just chuck it up to lack of knowledge. I don’t believe people are tying to offend by saying they have 4C hair if they don’t, they just don’t know. 4C hair appears more dry and more course than any other texture and when you feel your hair looks like this because of the lack of moisture, it can cause you to be confused. Many people go off perception of the hair because texture categorizing is quite confusing. I use to think I was 4C until I did my research. But when I said I was 4C it definitely wasn’t to offend, it was because I simply lacked knowledge of hair textures.... Having 4C hair doesn’t make your hair less than or more than because all hair textures can be healthy or not... AND.... With all of my research, I still don’t know my correct hair texture. I just know that I’m not 4C because of all the buzz and arguments over the 4C texture. Maybe I should seek a professional 🤷🏽‍♀️

    • @Tinarousse27
      @Tinarousse27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      why oh why would you think it's insulting to have 4c hair? There's nothing wrong with having 4c hair and shame on you for thinking otherwise

    • @xshesyourqorqeousxx3
      @xshesyourqorqeousxx3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +192

      Diane Rousse I don't think 4C hair is insulting. I have 4C hair and I love it. What is insulting is when girls with 3C/4A hair call their hair 4C because it's dry and unmanageable because they believe that 4C hair is like that without understanding that they don't know how to properly moisturize their hair

  • @judahwoodrupp8318

    How people can't see a difference is confusing to me. 4c shrinks like fucking crazy and is extremely tight when it shrinks. 4b looks similar when dry but the curls fall when it gets wet. This is an excellent example.

    • @sweetchocolatesecret
      @sweetchocolatesecret 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yeah I can see the difference too. When 4C is long the curl pattern is not nearly as visible as long 4B hair. I'm surprised no one else can see the difference....

    • @Tinarousse27
      @Tinarousse27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      when my hair was shorter I always thought it was 4c, but as it gets longer I start to see some more defined curls, and I think that the weight of your hair might make it look different when it's longer. So it's not really obvious when you try to compare someone with very short hair vs someone who has long hair like in this video

    • @soobinsboi

      Thanks for this explanation, im a boy and ive been growing out my hair and my mom has been twisting it often, i thought i had 4c hair and the twists where what was making my hair curly but a few weeks ago my mom put my hair into bantu twists and my hair soon was really puffy and frizzy but after washing it my hair got back curly. This whole week ive been confused about my hair and i guess i am actually 4b because my curls do come down when my hair is wet.

    • @thearough
      @thearough 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      tblackman78 no matter how long 4z hair gets will never hang like 4b not even when wet and if their hair was the same length 4Z hair does never look longer just denser it grows down not out like all other hair types and packs in tighter. their is no reward or ease of styling for 4z hair. it looks the same and goes nowhere it wont ever braid out like the older son. its not hair thats meant for growing. 4z is springy and shoots back not stretchy like 4b. u can almost stand on 4z coils its resistant to stretching and manipulation. 4z has a naturally zero natiral water content than 4 b and other types which gives it its unique behavior and weightlessness with length

It's high porosity and is always thirsty. Conditioner is a snack I feed my hair 2 times per week. Lol. Deep conditioning is a meal, protein is a rare dessert.

    theres def a difference between 4c hair and 4b hair, idk why people act like one is better than the other or that hair differences are taboo to talk about. and yes hair texture matters. 4c hair just because it barely or cant define, it gets less representation in the natural hair community and people assume its dry! defined hair doesnt mean its even actually moisturized.

  • @Tyiece
    @Tyiece 6 ปีที่แล้ว +823

    Both of these look like 4C to me. 4b texture has a visible curl pattern especially when its wet or super moisturized, also has a natural sheen

    • @Brownie8986
      @Brownie8986 6 ปีที่แล้ว +388

      Not exactly. Sheen is a reflection of hair porosity, not curl pattern. Take 2 people with stick straight strands but if one has more porous hair than the other she'll look like she just stuck her finger in an electric socket after air drying whereas the other will be smooth. 😂😂 It's hard to compare hair that is short to longer especially textured though so they may have similar curl patterns just different porosity.

    • @Ms.Byrd68
      @Ms.Byrd68 5 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      But isn't that about Porosity levels? Low porosity repels whereas High porosity soaks up moisture, product, etc.. like a 'sponge'. You can be anywhere on the hair chart with these porosities.

      @crabrangoonz8026 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@Ms.Byrd68 I think the structure of 4c hair make it low porosity porosity by nature. 4c hair is defined by dense, fine strands that are tightly coiled. because the coils are tight and the hair shaft is fine, it's difficult for moisture to penetrate the hair. I believe that 4c's only get high porosity hair from heat/chemical damage.

      I rubbed my fingers through a coworker's hair this morning and definitely felt the difference between 4b and 4c.
      The reason for this is because we had been going back and forth for a few weeks because I've been claiming to have 4c hair because I wanted 4c sooo badly.

    I appreciate the video however I do think it’s inaccurate. Both examples of the textures were not healthy representations because they had no moisture. Many “4c” naturals feel as though they have no curl pattern but in reality they are not moisturizing their hair properly. As a kinky textured natural myself i had to learn this. We are always looking at 4c hair in a unhealthy dry state so if its a dry stiff no curl fro then it has to be 4c🤔 but If a “4c” natural was to reach max hydration people would swear they were 4b! Also kinkier texture naturals should get out of the mindset of not wetting our hair we are not permed anymore you should be drenching your hair at least every other day thats how you get your curls to come back to life! (I had to learn this & Im still learning) but lets stop labeling the textures we should only be concerned about density, porosity, width. These are the things that help us know what works for our hair as individuals. Texture typing really doesn’t aid in helping us see what our individual head of hair needs. Lol i hope that made sense.
    Hey lovelies, Feel free to go check out my channel! I post hair videos for us kinky textures & more!❤️🤗 thanks!!

      Thank you.....dry parched hair is automatically considered 4c hair???? I have 4c hair and my hair has a lot of definition because I moisturize properly....most type 4 folks are not moisturizing properly and just class their hair as 4c as if 4c hair can't have definition...nope

      wcallisa22 I’m not trying to be mean here but you guys the hair table we are given isn’t really accurate ...4 type hair if anything goes beyond a-c..and you guys need to understand this and understand that the world is too damn diverse for a lot of peoples hair to react the same way...I group myself into 4c hair but I know it goes way beyond that and I’m telling you no amount of max hydration will bring out any curl..tiny bits maybe but my hair is meant to be coily and not curly..so it saddens me when other hair types wanna bash us like we don’t take care of our hair instead of understanding that we’re all too different..and second of all I’ll like to say...your real hair texture is the texture you get if you used only water on your hair daily and oil to protect and so if your hair curl or coil pattern changed from max hydration...oh that’s a good thing but it’s the products that changed your hair pattern and that’s not how it grew out of your body...you may not agree with me and that’s ok but that’s how it is for me...some hair textures are just meant to not curl but coil instead.

    • @LightsCameraAshley
      @LightsCameraAshley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      MeMy Me I completely see where you coming from. We all have different hair thats why I brought up porosity, density, and width because those things are info about your individual hair. And can i ask what is a coil? When I think coil I think of a tiny tight curl. And I’m not trying to tell you what kind of hair you have because you are right some kinky textures don’t curl even when wet but they usually dont have much shrinkage because of that. If your hair is shrinking 80% plus you have curl no matter how tiny. Also I wanted to address the statement that your hair texture when its wet is the natural texture if you’re hair. That’s true ta an extent. The more tight a curl is the more hard it is for moisture to enter the strand so if your hair is wet and the water is mostly sitting on top of your hair are you really looking at your hair in a drenched state? If you are constantly looking at your hair in a unhealthy state its easy to say oh this is normal this is how it grows out my head when in reality you have been using a routine that constantly keeping your hair dry n frizzy. Wash & go your hair at least every other day and ket me know if you still dont have curl pattern. Just drenched in water regularly seal with your oil or cream n watch your hair slowly take the moisture in. For kinky coily CURLS this will revive your curls to show with only water. Remember dry hair won’t curl!

    • @LightsCameraAshley
      @LightsCameraAshley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      MeMy Me oh and you can not change your curl pattern with out hard chemicals (perm, dye, texturing). The curls you get when using gel or cream is the curl that twisted out your scalp the product only minimized the frizz!! However if you learn to properly get moisture into your hair you’ll need these products less as your hair will be less frizzy

    Hi there. I’m new to your channel and let me say thank you for all of the work you put in to make this adorable video and to raise awareness in the natural community. Shot out to those adorable kiddos 😘😘😘However, I’m a 4c and my daughter is more 4b, but the only difference is that her hair is a tiny bit softer in texture and holds moisture slightly longer than mine. However, we treat them the same by practicing healthy hair habits and using the same products. Honestly, I don’t think natural hair can really be defined. Honestly, we can barely tell the difference in our hair types. People think that 4c hair is bad bc its dry, but it’s actually the most diverse type. We also easily dread and have stronger hair strands by nature. I just overcome dryness by using a daily hair spritz so to me my hair isn’t dry unless I want it to be. Thank you for sharing!👍🏾👍🏾

    my sister has kinky hair but her hair when its wet, it does soak up the water while, my hair soaks up any type of moisture. Its kinda annoying because my hair shrinks up a lot while hers don't, however my hair is super curly both wet and dry, while hers looks like she did a blow out

  • @Talldoll1
    @Talldoll1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Type 4 c looks the exact same when you braid it, twist it and eventually take it out. One kid's hair is longer one is shorter but the length doesnt tell you anything.
    Also, to me most ppl who have 4c hair have this self deprecating idea that their hair "can't" do certain things. 4c hair can spiral into curls if you take the time to detangle and let it be. Dont swish your hands through the spirals because that's like swishing your hands through spiraled ribbon. It's just going to mix together and tangle right back up. So finger comb, scrunch or wring the excess water out and shake out water.
    Also dont pick! 4c hair for many ppl tends to be thin. It easily snaps, it's not coarse. So when you're taking your fingertips to grab tiny pieces to fluff out as if you're trying to see the texture you're just teasing it out which is why it looks frizzy.
    It's not hard work... no it is. But the first thing is to change the attitude about 4c hair, treat it like gold, and let it be

    I can definitely tell the difference. I have 4c hair. The difference between the two is how they take in moisture. Water makes 4c hair knot up way quicker. The younger child has 4b hair as evidenced by when the hair was wet the shrinkage was looser & a bit more manageable. 4c hair needs more “training” & constant styling in order to achieve that over an extended amount of time. I’ve never had my hair straightened or pressed. It’s only been blown out which is why I can clearly tell that 4c hair needs a lot more TLC to fall in loose curls or appear moist when not styled.

    Will definitely say my hair definitely not 4c just looking it at and i might be a 4a 4b as well. This was very helpful. The only difference is that my hair is fine and color treated so it gives a different look. That's why I rather just look at porosity, this texture stress is just too much work. As long my hair is healthy

    I feel like true 4c hair is rare just like true 1A hair is rare. A lot of people who say they have 4c hair really have 4b or looser. But this is a good representation of 4c hair. The 4b hair seems to be a mix of 4a and 4b. Usually 4b hair is a mix and not straight 4b.

    4c hair looks like it has no separation just coils & coils interlocked together all over the head doing their own thing & it's very cottony to the touch & to the eye. 4c is usually very puffy. 4b has more give & it doesn't form an afro as well as 4c. 4b is curly/ coily so the spirals will lock together easier Making the curl pattern more visible but it will still look a little puffy. From being a 4B myself I've also noticed that it's very easy for me to straighten my hair with out heat & lay my edges down without heat. If I braid/ twist or band my hair while it's Dry it straitens(using lots of oil of course) so much that it will go limp.

    When mother(grandma for some/Whomever you consider family/not just female family/) is giving a child she loves protective braids ,,, that feeling is beyond priceless. My mom hated doing my hair she thought it was feminine of a guy , she changed her mind but still it was and still is one of the best moments I have in life 💯🙌🏾💙 and my hair is also similar to your sons with the long hair after it’s moisturized &/ when it’s just been unbraided . My hair texture is unusual for its mostly curly when it gets longer tho it does long almost wave like coils . But when I put it in a tight pony tail it almost straightens to a slight wave ... crazy idk
