This is one of the only Metallica songs that ever showcased Jason Newsted and how good of a bass player he was.

Jason is actually (and perhaps increasingly) being now realized as a quintessential component of Metallica.
It is sad that they were mean to him.

Yes Jason got the writing credit for this ,he wrote the bass line and he said originally this was supposed to be an instrumental on the black album to follow suit with the other albums having instrumentals

fun note: the pedal used to make that wha-wha you refer to as the sound of someone crying is actually called a Crybaby.

Love how James can write these awesome lyrics, & their performances are sooo tight & insync, They definitely rule in multi tasking & their diversity of each hit they created, This is why they're Thrash Metal God's!!!

Little facts: It was meant to be as an "instrumental" track of The Black Album, but Bob Rock (them producer at the time) suggested to add the lyrics and some other musical elements. The interlude is a harmonizing guitar solo, done by both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, before the main solo kicks in (Before the harmony happened, James Hetfield did a little solo beginning with the volume swelling at his guitar).
Well, obviously I like it so far, but I'm interested in what it would sound like it was an actual instrumental (just like Jason Newsted wanted it to be; he would get here even more "credit" for his music, I believe, and even his bass riff was much longer and a little bit more experimental)!!!

This song belongs to their famous BLACK ALBUM (1991). I was one of the firsts who purchased this album in Greece. In this album, they introduced very interesting new sounds that surprised their fans (and me too). Also, there's their first album that they included some other instruments like violins (Nothing Else Matters if I remember well).

I used to play this song and Blackened (also from MetallicA) as a mid song in a set, we had an original band but we used this song to break up the half set, give people something they were familiar with. Your question in the slow breakdown that you were asking about, if that was a guitar, the answer is yes. To achieve this, you use a volume pedal, you hit the note with the volume pedal down, bring the note in with the volume pedal, then fade it out with the volume pedal. You do this for each note and achieve the effect.
