Came here to understand what Steve Coogan and Rob Bryson were on about with their impression of Alan Bennett in ‘The Trip.’ Had never heard of him! Thought I’d just listen to a few seconds of it, but sat through the whole thing. This guy is a genius!
Alan Bennett is a genius in his ability to write about ordinary lives and make what is unsaid so eloquently clear. Wonderful to see him performing this dialogue.
Bennett proves he's a fiercely talented writer and actor...it's a joy every time I watch this one and all his plays. Pat Routlage is another favorite actor involved with Bennetts works. I found him in my late 50s,and am I glad I did 😊❤

Steve Sandford says it all. Mr Bennett is and always will be a genius. His dry humour and observation is what makes the uK writers stand out among the rest. Bless you Mr Bennett, bless you.
The line in the Pink Floyd song "Hanging on in quite desperation, it's the English way" really sums up a lot of Bennetts work. Wonderful stuff. At once funny, warm, sad, tragic, always melancholic. Superb writer.
"Dr. Chowdry said I should have a stable environment..." Bennett is a GENIUS. No other modern British Writer writes the poetry of banality like he does. (It's actually terrifying...) Genius!!! Funny thing......just for an instant, as the credits started to roll, I looked for the other actors. Only for a split second. But they are so real. You see them in your mind. How can one person just sit there and talk, and be so rivetingly fascinating? The man is a GENIUS. Thank you so much, Mr. Doh. Best wishes from San Diego, California.
This isn't actually the same as the version first aired by the BBC. It's 100% the same text but AB's giving a different performance - faster, for a start, almost perky. His first Graham was more ponderous, almost Eeyorish, and more touching. No idea why it was re-recorded. It's my favourite Talking Head (and the competition is fierce) but I'll stick with my VHS original. Anyone else noticed the difference? Or should I tek a tablet?
Superlative, right down to such a detail as the haunted eyes. It is as though the actor had briefed himself, with the help of some specialist, regarding autism and the various personality disorders. I think this kind of deep clinical study did in fact happen in the case of another superlative portayal, namely Mr Dustin Hoffman's autistic "Raymond" in "The Rain Man". But heaven only knows if it happened here. At any rate, hats off, for what must rank among of the best-crafted dramatic monologues on all of TH-cam.
I’m really glad I was born when I was. I could come out at 15 and it wasn’t a very big deal. Guys in generations before really had it hard. I wonder how many men ended up like this. I know there’s a little of the real Bennet in there but I don’t think he’d have done what this guy did.
OMG!!!! Your comment is EXACTLY what I was thinking. His mother is AWFUL though. She kept him like a pet and housekeeper and wanted to discard him at her own convenience. I really felt for him. A kind, intelligent man to be treated like that. And for her to allow some dude to come along and disrespect him. Despicable.
BillieJolene1 I feel for the mom. Written as a very ignorant woman who is like a sofa. She bears the imprint of last person that sat there. She’s a blank canvas and doesn’t think for herself. He isn’t mentally ill I don’t believe. Just driven to states from loneliness, depression and isolation from everyone except his mother. Nice comment. Thank you.
BillieJolene1 in all fairness he should have had his own life at 50. Being close to your mom and living with your mom are two different things. On the other hand she had no loyalty to a son that had taken care of her for decades. “Oh, Frank says you should be out of the house.” That did anger me. Who gives a damn what Frank thinks. Have friends lady. No one is saying you can’t but stop being led around by the nose by anyone who can form two sentences in succession. She was tiresome as hell.
He really didn't have much of a choice either given their generation and the way society treated people born like him. He wasn't mentally ill but she did cripple him. She certainly didn't show any encouragement or support for him getting out and on with his life as best as he could. The hint was her calling him her boyfriend. She would have been alone without him. He could have gone out and loads of things when he was younger but given his nature would have had a bit more difficult time. He knew it. His mother needed someone to stay with her, he wasn't ready or able to venture out into a ferocious world of bigotry. Sadly, given the chance he could have found himself in the proper places but his mother I think did hold him back selfishly. I say that because no sooner than she met a man she declared that the son needs to get out on his own. So she did withhold confidence in him.

It does not look like he would’ve had the support his family and the father died young. The mother was all about having a man in the place… But is soon as a different man (who probably shared views closer to the ones she really did deep down) came along she thought it was finally time that her son grew up. Well, lady it doesn’t work like that. You are 100% correct when you say that even if he had gotten out when he was younger he probably would not have known what to do and been incredibly socially awkward. I don’t know how some people can be so blind or ignorant and not notice that someone near them that they love is suffering. Even if you think that being gay is wrong would you really want this person, like your son for instance, to go through all this? Not really ever get to live life -Chess and male underwear magazines. Sad tale and very 1988. The year I was born. Struck a cord.

Alan Bennett is an uncommon student of human behaviour. A treasure.
That's the most unsettling Bennett piece I've seen. I'm really not sure what to think other than that he's a genius.
