Although you didn’t see me in the film, where Patricia Routledge was on the top deck of the London Bus, I was the Conductor downstairs !. I worked at Shepherds Bush Garage in West London, and the bus was hired by the filmmakers, so we weren’t carrying any passengers. I’m so happy to have finally begun this film. I can’t believe I’ve read all but two of Barbara Pym’s novels, and I missed that this movie was ever made of her. It has been many years since Ive read Barbara Pym so now I am going to start all over again. Patricia Routledge is a marvellous actress - would watch anything she does. Thank you so much for this one, it was fascinating. Cheers.
Fantastic film: Routledge is perfect in the role. I first came across Pam at uni and now have every one of her books. She wrote so well, and expressed such sensitivity about just being human, so many everyday details that often get forgotten, ignored, or glossed over.
What a wonderfully imaginative love letter to Barbara Pym. I have been reading her books over and over for decades - scores, really. Even have the cookbook! Delightful to see well-known characters woven in and out of in this film. I am drawn to start one all over again this evening!
Love Patricia Routledge. Listening to the words of Barbara Pym in this video, it makes me think about people that live alone & how everyone needs hugs...simplistic as it sounds. Thank you for sharing.
Who would have thought that a film would be made about Barbara Pym! I love her novels - her settings, characters and voice are unique, In the panel game of guessing the author, a paragraph would be enough to recognize Pym. What a fantastic film this was; in a quiet, understated way but shot with humour (much like Pym's style) it captured her world... and I can't imagine anyone better than Patricia Routledge to play Pym. Thank you so much for uploading this.
A quiet contemplative film but quite enjoyable for its calm sedateness. Thank you for this presentation. Now I must reread Miss Pim's novels. The world needs calm now in the midst of 2020.

I had something similar. I had read "Miss Pym Deposes" by Josephine Tey which was a murder mystery, so I came to this expecting a dead body at any minute (my money was on the vicar). It was a surprise to get to the end with no foul play and then discover it was about a real person. I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same.

This is a beautifully made film. I recently discovered Barbara Pym and have now read all her books. She is an exceptional writer and especially her earlier books are filled with gentle humour and a deep understanding of human nature. She was a master of creating a singular world where all her characters operate and perhaps they are cosy worlds but often the truth is found in the trivialities of our daily lives.
Excellence! I've never seen such natural acting before. The scenes with the actor playing "Henry" is unlike anything I've seen before - like peeking inside someone's window.
How lovely to see Jilly Cooper. As a student circa 1970 , I'd never miss her pieces in the Sunday Times. She was a sparkling fresh media voice back then.

8.45, Bishop's delight!! Loved it. Patricia Routledge is really skilled when it comes to monologues. I believe she used to be part of the cast in Coronation Street. Thank you.
I've never read Barbara Pym, I watched this because I've been watching Alan Bennett plays and monologues and this looked interesting. Tomorrow I'm going searching for a copy of one of her novels. I get the feeling that she writes in a comparable way to Jane Austin, she writes about what she knows and creates characters of humour that are real and neighbourhoods that are utterly believable. I can't wait to get reading. Thanks for uploading this and opening up a new author for me.
@@zharapatterson Another largely forgotten but wonderful writer!! So many terrific low-key female writers of the 20th century. Do investigate the Persephone press if you can (google it) - they reprint all these female writers many of whom are barely remembered nowadays but who are without exception, evocative and marvellous. If you like Barbara Pym and Elizabeth Taylor, you are in for a treat!
@@zoefoster1873 Yes, I looked it up ,but I'll already heard of Persephone Press. Have you heard of Virago Press,? they are also located in the UK, they also publish forgotten woman authors, from the UK and the US. I hope you do some research on them. Persephone Press published A Biography of Elizabeth Taylor.
@@zharapatterson Yes, I know Virago and like them too! I just love the covers and end papers of the Persephone books, they are so elegant. I hadn't heard of the biography of Elizabeth Taylor so will try to find a copy. Thank you for that!
Well, because this isn't really what I got out of Barbara Pym. (only watched 10 minutes, so I'm probably pre-judging). The bit with the arrogant Bishop looks to me like a direct, updated nick from Jane Austin. (Was it Mr Collins?) Some must see a lot in common twixt Austen and Pym, my sis loved both, while I at the same time as she was finding Pym, I was discovering Anita Brookner, by whom I was far more impressed.
I confess, although I am an avid reader, I never heard if Barbara Pym . However, I paused this video and logged onto my public library tomorrow her first book!
What a beautiful drama it reminded me in some ways of a book called The scent of water where the character was very similar to the main protagonist in this quietly understated on the other characters in the programme were equally brilliantly played but finally I don't feel one could not mention the indomitable Patricia Routledge fantastic actor and as one of the other commenters have stated chronically underrated also something I noticed which having watched Patricia Routledge for many years I think she has a very strong resemblance facially two Dame Joan Plowright fantastic programme and I enjoyed it immensely best wishes somebody who loves literature London😊😊
I loved this, no idea why I have not seen or heard of it before. I love Barbara Pym's work, and I have read a lot of them. I can recognise some of her work in this programme, just delightful. It is criminal that her work was neglected for such a long time.
Having watched this I can understand why Philip Larkin thought so highly of her : they both looked Life square in the face free of false sentiment . Their detachment could appear rather cold hearted but it's their deep compassion which shines through all they wrote .
She voiced thoughts that many of us have ..especially finding things to fill the time while waiting for The Day, enjoying and noting all around her as I do.It is uncanny she expressed herself exactly as I do myself. "I believe it is a dire sin to wait for each day to pass so I keep myself busy" ....Thank you for sharing this. So very well acted out by all.i looked up Paul Scott, Staying On. It is a hurting shame she did not have the luck or siding to win that one time. He went on to a much better novel re Day of the Scorpion.
This short film reminds me of the opening words of L.P. Hartley's The Go-between: "The past is another country; they do things differently there." I never imagined that my own country would fall into that category, yet here we are. Things were different back then. It was indeed another country.
+gemstash pym had a gentle dignity. she took the reader by the hand and shows us a world of gentle spinster women and, often, church affairs. her last novel,; quartet in autumn', was booker nominated and quite different, a rewarding read.
I hadn't heard about Barbara Pym until now and I have no inkling as to what she was like. But Patricia Routledge always gives a certain warmth to the characters she creates, whether drama or comedy. Wonderful actress!
I just discovered Patricia Routledge last night here on youtube. *A Woman of No Importance* written by Alan Bennett of Beyond the Fringe. I tried watching Beyond the Fringe but I could not understand the dialog. Win some, lose some. I have read Pym's books for a long time. She is just so good.
This was lovely to come across. Barbara Pym seems like an old, dear friend to me. I share her gentle amusement at the little absurdities of everyday life, though we live(d) in different times and places. She provides me with comfort, reassurance, and happiness almost every day. I have read all of her novels many times, several to the point that I can recite passages from memory. I think she's wonderful! I am glad to find other Pym fans here because I long for your company too. Isn't it fun to find the reference to another of her books as you read along?
Wonderful! I love Barbara Pym's novels, and just found out about this film. I wish I could get a copy to view on my TV, since my computer screen is small. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much, and it was a treat to see Barbara's sister Hilary as well as her literary executor Hazel Holt. And of course, Patricia Routledge's acting was superb. I also loved Susan Wooldridge's character. Actually, I believe she could have played a good younger Barbara Pym. And the other actors were fine, too. Thanks for posting.
If I knew it was about The Barbara Pym I would've watched it a lot sooner. I love her novels and I read her biography, which was semi-autobiographical because her friend found her diaries (she Did keep diaries!) and she made full use of them. She died before age 60. One line I do remember from her diary is, when she found out she had cancer she said, "I'm not going to make it to 60?" She also said if I had it to do over again I wouldn't be as involved with the Church.
No one else could have done the role justice. Dame Patricia brought to it the clarity, pathos, and nuance needed to portray Barbara Pym as a woman of her time who spent her career shining a light on the miniature tragedies and foibles of a quintessentially English way of life we'll never see again.
Such a wonderful portrayal of Barbara Pym. I see I have watched it on the anniversary of her death. I am inspired to read more of her novels and to renew my membership of the BP society.

Mari Christian i would . . . but i don't have a circle :) not that i know of anyway . . .
Just lovely! PR was, as always, wonderful! Love her, love Pym! Tysm S Holmes
😊
A must see❤❤A truly moving masterpiece both film & Dear Patricia Routledge as always perfectly executed ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A quietly beautiful film - we need more of these. Slow and understated everyday things and people - refreshing.
I had to pause watching this as my eyes were tearing up and I’m in my lunch break at work! Fantastic! Never seen this before. I’ve read a few Pym novels and enjoyed them ; ms Routledge is always a firm fave. Can’t wait to finish the rest of it tonight
Delightful short play enhanced by staring Dame Patricia Routledge. Totally endorse previous glowing tributes.
I love Barbara Pym and Patricia Routledge! A real treat!
This has opened my eyes to Patricia Routledge, very good.
A very fine ACTRESS AND singer with comedic talent TOO!
HAVE YOU seen dame Patricia in keeping up appearances AND hetty wainthropp.. marvelous television 💯❤
A lovely bit of escapism, from a gentler time. Thanks for sharing.
8.45, Bishop's delight!! Loved it. Patricia Routledge is really skilled when it comes to monologues. I believe she used to be part of the cast in Coronation Street. Thank you.
1961 i THINK💛
Very good diction and clarity!
First time seeing Ms. Patricia in a drama. Thanks!
Also try Elizabeth Taylor, not the late violet eyed actress who died in 2011 but the excellent writer who died in 1975.
Why would anyone dislike this? oh, humanity...
Because they do not appreciate fine acting in all its finest ie_dame Patricia Routledge💖
Routledge was a musical comedy star also. Check her out in The Pirates of Penzance. Great actress!
I totally adore Patricia Shes just such a multi talented lady,Very funny sings beautifully too :-)
I confess, although I am an avid reader, I never heard if Barbara Pym .
This is so lovely. Thank you very much.
I loved this, no idea why I have not seen or heard of it before. I love Barbara Pym's work, and I have read a lot of them. I can recognise some of her work in this programme, just delightful. It is criminal that her work was neglected for such a long time.
Having watched this I can understand why Philip Larkin thought so
highly of her : they both looked Life square in the face free of false sentiment .
Their detachment could appear rather cold hearted but it's their deep compassion
which shines through all they wrote .
He went on to a much better novel re Day of the Scorpion.
sums up life really 💕
🌹🌻💛
Dame Patricia Routledge
Britain's greatest gift x
What a treat! Thank you. I watched it first time. I subscribe🌼 so many wonderful actors, such a pleasure to see them all young and talented.
This short film reminds me of the opening words of L.P. Hartley's The Go-between: "The past is another country; they do things differently there." I never imagined that my own country would fall into that category, yet here we are. Things were different back then. It was indeed another country.
A foreign country
Brilliant! Thank you very much for the upload.
there was something special about barbara pym. i think patricia routledge captures some of the essence of the lady. i love this. thank you.
+John Eunson What do you think was special about her? She was an introvert, I think and I can relate to that. Anything else?
+gemstash pym had a gentle dignity. she took the reader by the hand and shows us a world of gentle spinster women and, often, church affairs. her last novel,; quartet in autumn', was booker nominated and quite different, a rewarding read.
I hadn't heard about Barbara Pym until now and I have no inkling as to what she was like. But Patricia Routledge always gives a certain warmth to the characters she creates, whether drama or comedy. Wonderful actress!
Yes< and what a delight to have stumbled on this film! I have read most of her novels...a long time ago now- and did not know about this film.
Patricia, a British icon from a time gone forever in old England.. lovely story of village life. Thank you.
This is very special, thank you for uploading this so much
Endearingly enjoyable.
Love Barbara Pym.
Having the remarkable Patricia Routledge play her is a fine tribute.
Wishing DAME Patricia Routledge a very HAPPY 91st BIRTHDAY 💛❤🌟👒👜👠🍰🍵..
February 2020💛❤💛❤💛⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐xxxxxxxxxxx happiness ALWAYS
TO DAME Patricia-
I love this and I love her novels.
Interesting to hear the Booker short list. All forgotten novels now, even the winner.
Wow. This is so different from Keeping Up Appearances. Most excellent Patricia. Bless you
I love Patricia ROUTLEDGE ,Isnt' she SPECIALLLLLL
She certainly is 💖💖💖💖..xX dame Patricia Routledge will turn 90 in February xx🙏🙏 God bless her .....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
What a tender story, and so well portrayed. Poetic and yet very down-to-earth. Or is it down-to-Heaven?
So glad she got the recognition she deserved before she passed away. Amazing to think that her work was passed over so many times before “Quartet”.
I really like this lady!! Everything she does, she does it with class!❤ Ahhhh, Mr Big Al!! Love the hair!!!✌
