    This reading has been so helpful in my study of Hebrew. I appreciate particularly the slow reading. It makes reading and pronunciation an easy task. Getting the pronunciation right really impresses my friends. LOL.

    "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates."

    I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today (May 25), this, along with Leviticus 19:18 and Mark 12:28-34, was the basis for our Sunday School Lesson for today. It was entitled "The Greatest Commandment." The hymn, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling compliments these Scriptures, regardless of denomination.

    Thank you for the help in pronouncing the Shema correctly. I have been attempting to pray it in Hebrew and then English but I have trouble remembering the vowel sounds and making sure that I speak it correctly. This slow version is extremely helpful! Todah Rabbah!

    Very helpful. Read at just the right speed. Having a pause between each word gives time to think or try and pronounce the next word and see how wrong I get it. I also find the highlighted word read in red really helpful.

    How about this?
    Deuteronomy 13:6-9
    New American Standard Bible (NASB)
    6 “If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife [a]you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods’ (whom neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end), 8 you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him. 9 But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.

    • @DavidEmanuel0007
      @DavidEmanuel0007  9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Queruvim de Fogo Good spot. The tetragrammaton is read as a perpetual qere-ketiv, which means that the reader does not pronounce the name of God, but instead pronounces the word "ADONAI". This is how Hebrew is taught, according to the Masoretic tradition. Even though the word is not there, this is how it should be pronounced to avoid speaking the name of the Lord.
      Blessings

    • @queruvim
      @queruvim 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      David Emanuel "to avoid speaking the name of the Lord." Such words are in contrast with the Bible when it says that people "may know" His name. Psalm 83:18 Satan has used false religion to hinder people from coming to know God by name. In ancient times some Jews chose to ignore the inspired Scriptures in favor of tradition that called for avoiding the use of God’s name. By the first centuries of our Common Era, Jewish public readers had evidently been instructed, not to read God’s name as it appeared in their Holy Scriptures, but to substitute the word ʼAdho·naiʹ,meaning “Lord.” Doubtless, this practice contributed to a tragic decline in spirituality. Many lost out on the benefits of a close personal relationship with God.

      does the tradition still apply for avoiding God's name even when the tetragram shows up more than 6,000 times on the scriptures plus Psalm 83:18 says that "people ought know that the Almighty is Jah, Yahweh, Jehovah but not Adonay, Elohim, etc...? I'm just asking not arguing...

    Question:
    Why do most people say “Adonai” (spelled אדוני) instead of what is clearly visible; which is the creators name יהוה (YAHWAH)?

    • @DavidEmanuel0007
      @DavidEmanuel0007  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is probably the most common question asked. I do not have time or space to get into the detail here, but the reading of the divine name is subject to something called a perpetual qere. Although you have correctly identified the consonantal tradition as yod-he-waw-he, the vocalic tradition (vowels) reflects the same (or equivalent vowels) for the word Adonai. Thus, when reading the word, it is traditionally read "Adonai." This is not the only instance of the phenomenon. In numerous places across the Hebrew Bible, there are places where the consonantal tradition is not read, but the tradition reflected by the vowels is pronounced. If you wanted more information, you would need to look up the tradition called qere-ketiv. This is not a secret conspiracy to hide the name of the Lord, or anything like that. Most people simply follow the Masoretic tradition.

    How come you read it ( יְהֹוָ֖ה ) Adonai which is not Adonai. It is not written as Adonai that spelled like this ( אֲדֹנָי ). Your teaching is misleading to read Hebrew.

    • @DavidEmanuel0007
      @DavidEmanuel0007  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read accoding to the hebrew tradition without pronouncing the name of the Lord. The vowels around the name of the Lord are part of a perpetual qere that tells the reader to pronounce "Adonai" instead of the name of the Lord. This is the way I was taught, and I am happy to continue with it.

    • @rosemariego8965
      @rosemariego8965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DavidEmanuel0007 Okay.. I respect your belief. It is enough for me that you have shared with me the reason why you cannot say the correct pronunciation of what is written. I just compared it to the Hebrew Alphabet chart and Nikkud Table so that it can be transliterated into phonetic letters and I found out that it is NOT Adonai.
      The Yod or Y with vocal shva "e" is Y + e - Ye. The Hei or H with a dot on the top (left side) is cholam or Cholem "or" is H + or - Ho.
      The Vav or V with Kamatz or Kametz "a" is V + a + H (last Hei) - Vah.
      If all are combined it reads (Ye + Ho + VaH) YaHoVaH. It is Yehovah not Adonai but if the cholam or dot is omitted it is "Yeh_vah".
      Based on the Hebrew Bible, the Tanakh, the 6th letter in Hebrew alphabet is pronounced as "V" because of the Hebrew word Vayikra, they wrote the first letter as "V" (Google: "Leviticus 1 in Tanakh" and "Isaiah 42:8 in Tanakh" to see the tetragrammaton with complete vowels).
      Anyway, thanks for paying attention to my comment.
