My personal theory is that Barney's train was en route to a different resistance outpost. Dr. Kleiner mentions that there are multiple outposts to evacuate to in his speech to City 17 in Episode 1. Also, if you carefully watch the Episode 1 ending again, the track Barney's train was on ends up going in a completely different direction than Gordon and Alyx's train. This leads me to believe that Barney and co. ended up in a different section of the outlands, and then made their way to a different outpost, where he acted as a leader to the citizens and rebels there. From there, I imagine his plan was to get them to either White Forest or perhaps some other rebel base.
Since the beggining, when he was just a security guard that wanted to hang out with gordon to when he was leading the resistances against the combine, he still owns us a beer

@@chocofrolik834 That seems strange considering Barney was a major player in Episode 1. Just straight forgetfulness? I think if I vaguely remember correctly, he was phased out because they forgot to re-incorporate him into the story after his White Forest appearance was cut.
Honestly, I haven't really thought about barney when I played episode 2, I guess the whole battle in the end coupled with the fact that alyx almost died really put Barney on a second note. There's actually a mod in development called Half-Life 2: Biohazard in development, where you play as Barney after Episode 1. I'm a writer for that mod and without saying much it'll be very interesting to see how to community reacts to it. (Also note that I've made some major changes to the story, so what you see on MobDB may not be accurate)

I'm still holding on to the old script, though I doubt I'll be able to do anything with it. I don't want to call it Half-Life 2 Blue Shift because that's unoriginal and could cause confusion with another mod called Half-Life: Blue Shift 2.

Because G-man wasn't interested in them. There were loads of people in the Black Mesa Facility, G-man was only interested in a select few. He wasn't even supposed to save Adrian but he argued to with the catch being he couldn't use him like he does with Gordon.
There is a Source mod I've stumbled upon several years ago called "Lost Squad" that aimed to explore what happened to Barney after the events of ep1 Sadly this mod seems to be abandoned as the last posted article on its Mod DB page was back in 2019. Really sad because that mod seemed very promising.

They then almost end up hitting some wreckage that was left over from the 7 hour war. They then battle their way through zombie infested warzones, and hunter ravaged areas to reach white forest.
ive always liked listening to your theories and from what i recall early on before HL:A's release there was talks of a HL:Barney type game. however the rumors now say that it's probably going to be a straight successor to HL:A but it's all in preproduction while citadel is being worked on.

My theory is after the citadel blast in the ending of episode 1. His train also derailed, with the GMan possibly saving his life. I think he's either in stasis or at some other rebel outpost like a fellow commenter mentions.
Valve had HL:A be a prequel (pre-sequel) because they figured having something that took place after Episode 2 would have jeopardized the plot potential of Half-Life 3 in the future. Writing within a time that was already predetermined in the canon was to save them from writing themselves into a corner later on. I've always thought about a new game featuring Barney post-Episode 1 as the lead, a Blue Shift 2 although rumor has it that Valve big project at the moment codenamed Citadel is a prequel starring Barney. With Ep 2's ending re-written from HL:A, I can imagine Barney showing up at White Forest after his adventure in the beginning of HL3 and being confused as to what's going on. Barney would tell Gordon that he overheard the strider battle go on and knew that Gordon must've been there. Then Eli and Barney would talk about the current situation and who the G-Man is. Lamarr is still in space though, I wonder if we'll ever see her again?
When the rumors about the next half life being a VR game started swirling I remember some friends of mine saying it would be Blue Shift 2 following Barney's journey to white forest

if they do make a second barney game they should have the train being blown off the rails by a combine ambush. So barney and a large group of rebels have to go on foot which would take a longer time which would also mean more game time.
5:20 gotta correct ya there. Nothing has changed in regards of lore. The ending of Alyx has pretty created a timeline branch for that specific story to go on. Unfortunately it has little to do with the original Laidlaw plot, especially since multiple timelines were already confirmed to be canon.

I like the idea of a VR Barney expansion. Would also be a cool way of reintroducing Russel to current HL events. After all, he isn't in the original games. Perhaps Barney crossed paths with him along the way.
I never even thought about Barney's whereabouts until now. Pretty interesting. There's also some other Pikmin and Earthbound related videos that could work as well. Maybe not theories, but rather discussions or character analysis.
Honestly Barney should get his own game filling in the time gaps from Hl2 Ep2 and Hl3. Possible titles I’m just gonna spitball are “Half Life: Outlands”, “Half Life: White Forest”, or “Half Life: Episode Barney”
I apologize in advance for the rambly nature of this comment. I think a much better way to end/continue his story would be to have Barney be the one who accompanies Father Grigori in the cancelled Arkane Return to Ravenholm rather than Adrian Shepherd. Shepherd would have been a bad fit for that game, and basically nothing from Opposing Force 1 would have tied things in (no Race X, HECU, or wrench/knife). They could have had Barney’s train break down near Ravenholm (the more normal part of the city that wasn’t completely overrun by zombies), and they’d make their way to the buildings. Barney would be unconscious for several days, and in that time the refugees would have been infected by Father Grigori’s “cure”. That would be a great way to explain where all the headcrabless zombies came from, and when he was asleep Grigori would have upgraded/repaired Barney’s Combine armor so it would have the electricity resistant ability from the cancelled game. A much better option for Shepherd would have been that cancelled Opposing Force 2 mod where the first part of the game takes place during the 7 Hour War, and the rest probably had them conducting small raids on the combine and building up the Resistance. Unfortunately that mod was taken of Moddb, and basically nothing got done in terms of levels or story (there were a few levels, but it never really went anywhere). Here’s what I would do (or at least an idealized version of me who actually has the skills nesisary to do this): The first fourth/third of the game would take place during the Seven Hour War, but it would be similar to Halo Reach where it makes you feel awesome and deluded the player into thinking they can win (assuming they don’t already know the outcome). I’d take lots of inspiration from the city missions in Halo (you’d have a few vehicle sections in a tank where you’re able to mow down a bunch of Synths. There’d be a few buildings occupied by Combine, and you’d flush them out by blowing up their machinery. And have a few turret sections, but be able to remove them like Mmod.). You’d see Combine invading and at first you’re able to beat them back (this is just the scouting force), and after you “win” they’d truly show up in force like when that massive Covenant fleet arrives at reach after you blow up that ship. The rest of the city chapters would be like a mix of New Alexandra (Reach) and Coastal Highway (ODST) where you try to save as many civilians as you can, then flee into the wilderness with the army and civilians (there was an unused cutscene from Alyx that shows the 7 Hour War, and it’s kind of like what I’m describing where it looks like they can win at first, and has the different beta Synths). The rest of the game would be conducting raids on Combine trains, small bases, and trying to help civilians escape (then you’d see human Combine, but those different Synth soldiers haven’t been phased out yet). Apparently they were planning on bringing back Race X. Building on this when you’re in the woods or wasteland you’d see some Pit Drones, but just assume that they’re part of the ecosystem like the Xen creatures became. Then you’d see more of them, and realize that they’re coming from a hidden base. You’d see different Race X members, and enslaved Vortigaunts. There would also be a few Alien Grunts wearing Synth carapace (they’ve been growing their own). The base is a mash up of human, Combine, and Xen/Race X technology (they’re scavenging stuff and are trapped because of Combine technology). Their leader would be the Kingpin (was supposed to be in the mod, and I decided to mash these different things together to make a third alien faction). That would be the boss, and it has telekinetic abilities (throws physics objects at you). These specific Vortigaunts would be free, and are now on your side. They were going to have marines on your side so I’d make fleshed out squad mechanics. Like in Opposing Force there would be different classes of marines (medics, engineers, and normal soldiers). You’d be able to give them commands like man this turret, throw grenades/concrete fire on this enemy, fallow/stay, hop in this vehicle, and take cover (they’d naturally do this last one). There would be a mix of solo combat, and squad combat (maybe you’d go into a place and get ride of hazards or open a door so they can get in). Eventually you’d get Vortigaunts helping you. Similar to the Arkane Opposing Force 2 there would be a big emphasis on electricity, but it would be more like the electrical weapons in Halo Infinite (amazing gameplay, pretty bare bones in terms of content). There would also be different electrical puzzles, that would require friendly Vortigaunts, batteries, or just using a Shock Roach. This all sounds amazing I’m my head, but they could all be terrible ideas. What do you think of this?
This all sounds legit cool!! I've always wanted some official Half-Life side game focusing on the 7 Hour War. It's a part of the lore I feel could be explored more.
Barney repaid Gordon’s beer by adventuring with him in HL:3 Also in the same vein I want a mossman expansion. More focused on the barley recognized squad mechanic. And physics then combat. Taking place at the citadel first. And then leading to the borealis. The Barney expansion would be like
Like another comment said there is a good chance that Barney just went to a different outpost, and this may be because Barney was guiding a bunch of civilians who likely would've been safer in an unimportant outpost knowing that White Forest would be the focus of the military action of the combine due to the rocket. Likely it wouldn't even be his own decision, but rather Magnesson ordering him to go to another position.
Unlike Alex and Gorden who travel light and are able to find a car/take very dangerous shortcuts, Barney and the many groups of resistance members/ citizens has to regroup ,take care of the wounded, form a plan/find a path that is safe or alot of people to travel by sending scout ahead and wait ect, the game dosnt show alot of people went on the train but is safe to assume there where at at least 50-100 people with Barney. lets assume it took 6-8 hours for Gorden and Alex to go from the train crash to white forest.the start of the game isearly morning and the seting of white forest is late noon early afternoon. Barney side would at least take a whole day between planing and moving though the forest and mountains.with probably many compromised roads, like there is no way Barney and that much normal peoples crossing a radiation area with zombies or going down a mine or even take thier shot with a main road if the combiens are moving alot of thier force to Whiteforest from all direction. i would give them probably the whole day to arrive to White forest if not more.

Hello (new subscriber) Hare is my theory but I wanna say that this includes Epistole 3. So ita clear that G Man likes Alyx. We know that he takes her with him in epiatole 3. Mainly becouse she can be easily manipulated now when her father is dead. Its possible that after he takes her, he sends her back in time (in HL Alyx) where he shows her the future and what will happen to her dad. There she agrees to save Eli and work for G Man making a paralel universe (the HL Alyx ending) or changing time as a hole. By all means Gorden is brought back (in the HL Alyx ending) remmembering everything that happened in Epistole 3. This will explain why Gorden ( us the player as him ) feel so shocked and confused about all of this. I also wanna mention an alternative approach: In epistole 3 the G Man may have made Alyx to expiriance HL Alyx in her mind but also like that manegin to change the past. This will explain why Alyx follows the G Man without worrying in Epistole 3 and also by changing the past Freeman is placed in the HL Alyx ending but unknow if he remmembers what have happened. Its possible that Barney has met the G man too but this is unknown by us. P. S. Sorry for the long comment that is not related to this videos' question but I wanted to say my thoughts. Neat video! Really, Barney is an amazing character, and I'd love to see him get more background and story as a whole. I'm perosnally nbot sure about a VR game tho, it will hindrance many players from enjoyinbg the experience firsthand. Also fun fact, the name Barney is pet name from BERNARD and supposedly Irish. Real talk, his character took a back seat to the events of episode two, what with the portal storm, Alyx’s encounter with the hunters, the antlion mines, he really wasn’t needed to tell the story Valve wanted to tell. yo barney is my favorite hl character and i was so fcking sad he wasnt in episode 2 hence the reason i dont like episode 2 and only played it once. i have some theories as to what happend to him and theyre kinda sad, first one is that g man didnt really follow barney around in blue shift is because gman was working on making sure barney got out of black mesa so that 20 years later he'd stop gordon from going to nova prospekt, and since gman didnt need barney anymore, he got rid of him without raising any suspicion. the second theory is he died, and everyone knows expect gordon, they dont tell him so that they dont make him sad, after going through what he went through, barneys death could break him even more.

If the next mainline Half Life game allows Gordon to finally eat and drink something, Barney handing Gordon that beer he owes would be the perfect way to show it off.
Barney can appear in HL3 to help with alyx save from gman, or just be help like alyx in some chapters, he can't be just dissapear. Maybe get even gman interest.
I think if anything when we get a episode 3, or Half life 3, or whatever, following Gordan right after his moment in half life alyx at the end. My hope is barney will show up and act somewhat as the new alyx while she's gone.
We need a sequel to Blue Shift where you play as Barney during and after episode 2. It could be in the Alyx universe and could be a nice prelude to Half-Life 3. It could start with the part where Barney separates from Gordon and Alyx, then he makes a stop and that's when the citadel blows up. So then the resistance has to make it there on foot. And they could get captured by the combine and a ton of shenanigans could happen. He would return to see grubs (or whatever they are) outside of the white forest base, and they go in and sees through the window where Alyx kills the grub and then G-man and her go away through a G-man portal and Eli yelling about wanting to kill him. Then Barney can come in and be like "I can help with that." Then the credits roll.
Then, since Valve can't count to 3, they could finally make the Adrian Shepard in Half-Life 2 games, where he manages to sneak out of the void with the help of the vortigaunts while G-man is busy trapped in the vault in Half-Life Alyx. Then he goes through the events of episode 1-episode 2 but from a different perspective. Imagine if he starts in Nova Prospekt and gets out just before it explodes. Then maybe he returns to Xen and Ravenholm and then sees the collapse of the Citadel and sneaks on the train with Gordon and Alyx. The game could then end with the explosion and his fate unknown. Then Valve can make Half-Life 3 or just something else

I think probable the obvious theory is G man since nobody mentions his existence after episode 1. Might not be but after he seems to vanish into fin air after episode 1 and nobody mentions him I go with that ^^
Remember that it was originally intended to be a 3-episode series, so we didn't get the full story. My guess is that Barney was probably intended to play a bigger role in the original plans for Episode 3, and his whereabouts during the events of Episode 2 would've tied into that.
I think it would be really funny if it's Barney who ends up killing the G-man. It would be so ironic if the man the G-man paid so little attention to is the one who manages to end him

They did recently find notes from something called Half-Life: Citadel. I think alot of people are hoping it's gonna be centered on barney

My theory is after the citadel blast in the ending of episode 1. His train also derailed, with the GMan possibly saving his life. I think he's either in stasis or at some other rebel outpost like a fellow commenter mentions.
Valve had HL:A be a prequel (pre-sequel) because they figured having something that took place after Episode 2 would have jeopardized the plot potential of Half-Life 3 in the future. Writing within a time that was already predetermined in the canon was to save them from writing themselves into a corner later on. I've always thought about a new game featuring Barney post-Episode 1 as the lead, a Blue Shift 2 although rumor has it that Valve big project at the moment codenamed Citadel is a prequel starring Barney. With Ep 2's ending re-written from HL:A, I can imagine Barney showing up at White Forest after his adventure in the beginning of HL3 and being confused as to what's going on. Barney would tell Gordon that he overheard the strider battle go on and knew that Gordon must've been there. Then Eli and Barney would talk about the current situation and who the G-Man is. Lamarr is still in space though, I wonder if we'll ever see her again?
When I ended Half Life 2: episode 2, the first question came into my mind was: And where was Barney this whole time?

if they do make a second barney game they should have the train being blown off the rails by a combine ambush.

5:20 gotta correct ya there. Nothing has changed in regards of lore. The ending of Alyx has pretty created a timeline branch for that specific story to go on. Unfortunately it has little to do with the original Laidlaw plot, especially since multiple timelines were already confirmed to be canon.

I like the idea of a VR Barney expansion. Would also be a cool way of reintroducing Russel to current HL events. After all, he isn't in the original games. Perhaps Barney crossed paths with him along the way.
I never even thought about Barney's whereabouts until now. Pretty interesting. There's also some other Pikmin and Earthbound related videos that could work as well. Maybe not theories, but rather discussions or character analysis.

I apologize in advance for the rambly nature of this comment.
I think a much better way to end/continue his story would be to have Barney be the one who accompanies Father Grigori in the cancelled Arkane Return to Ravenholm rather than Adrian Shepherd. Shepherd would have been a bad fit for that game, and basically nothing from Opposing Force 1 would have tied things in (no Race X, HECU, or wrench/knife). They could have had Barney’s train break down near Ravenholm (the more normal part of the city that wasn’t completely overrun by zombies), and they’d make their way to the buildings. Barney would be unconscious for several days, and in that time the refugees would have been infected by Father Grigori’s “cure”. That would be a great way to explain where all the headcrabless zombies came from, and when he was asleep Grigori would have upgraded/repaired Barney’s Combine armor so it would have the electricity resistant ability from the cancelled game.
A much better option for Shepherd would have been that cancelled Opposing Force 2 mod where the first part of the game takes place during the 7 Hour War, and the rest probably had them conducting small raids on the combine and building up the Resistance. Unfortunately that mod was taken of Moddb, and basically nothing got done in terms of levels or story (there were a few levels, but it never really went anywhere). Here’s what I would do (or at least an idealized version of me who actually has the skills nesisary to do this): The first fourth/third of the game would take place during the Seven Hour War, but it would be similar to Halo Reach where it makes you feel awesome and deluded the player into thinking they can win (assuming they don’t already know the outcome). I’d take lots of inspiration from the city missions in Halo (you’d have a few vehicle sections in a tank where you’re able to mow down a bunch of Synths. There’d be a few buildings occupied by Combine, and you’d flush them out by blowing up their machinery. And have a few turret sections, but be able to remove them like Mmod.). You’d see Combine invading and at first you’re able to beat them back (this is just the scouting force), and after you “win” they’d truly show up in force like when that massive Covenant fleet arrives at reach after you blow up that ship. The rest of the city chapters would be like a mix of New Alexandra (Reach) and Coastal Highway (ODST) where you try to save as many civilians as you can, then flee into the wilderness with the army and civilians (there was an unused cutscene from Alyx that shows the 7 Hour War, and it’s kind of like what I’m describing where it looks like they can win at first, and has the different beta Synths). The rest of the game would be conducting raids on Combine trains, small bases, and trying to help civilians escape (then you’d see human Combine, but those different Synth soldiers haven’t been phased out yet).
Apparently they were planning on bringing back Race X. Building on this when you’re in the woods or wasteland you’d see some Pit Drones, but just assume that they’re part of the ecosystem like the Xen creatures became. Then you’d see more of them, and realize that they’re coming from a hidden base. You’d see different Race X members, and enslaved Vortigaunts. There would also be a few Alien Grunts wearing Synth carapace (they’ve been growing their own). The base is a mash up of human, Combine, and Xen/Race X technology (they’re scavenging stuff and are trapped because of Combine technology). Their leader would be the Kingpin (was supposed to be in the mod, and I decided to mash these different things together to make a third alien faction). That would be the boss, and it has telekinetic abilities (throws physics objects at you). These specific Vortigaunts would be free, and are now on your side.
They were going to have marines on your side so I’d make fleshed out squad mechanics. Like in Opposing Force there would be different classes of marines (medics, engineers, and normal soldiers). You’d be able to give them commands like man this turret, throw grenades/concrete fire on this enemy, fallow/stay, hop in this vehicle, and take cover (they’d naturally do this last one). There would be a mix of solo combat, and squad combat (maybe you’d go into a place and get ride of hazards or open a door so they can get in). Eventually you’d get Vortigaunts helping you.
Similar to the Arkane Opposing Force 2 there would be a big emphasis on electricity, but it would be more like the electrical weapons in Halo Infinite (amazing gameplay, pretty bare bones in terms of content). There would also be different electrical puzzles, that would require friendly Vortigaunts, batteries, or just using a Shock Roach.
This all sounds amazing I’m my head, but they could all be terrible ideas. What do you think of this?

Like another comment said there is a good chance that Barney just went to a different outpost, and this may be because Barney was guiding a bunch of civilians who likely would've been safer in an unimportant outpost knowing that White Forest would be the focus of the military action of the combine due to the rocket. Likely it wouldn't even be his own decision, but rather Magnesson ordering him to go to another position.
Unlike Alex and Gorden who travel light and are able to find a car/take very dangerous shortcuts, Barney and the many groups of resistance members/ citizens has to regroup ,take care of the wounded, form a plan/find a path that is safe or alot of people to travel by sending scout ahead and wait ect, the game dosnt show alot of people went on the train but is safe to assume there where at at least 50-100 people with Barney.
lets assume it took 6-8 hours for Gorden and Alex to go from the train crash to white forest.the start of the game isearly morning and the seting of white forest is late noon early afternoon. Barney side would at least take a whole day between planing and moving though the forest and mountains.with probably many compromised roads, like there is no way Barney and that much normal peoples crossing a radiation area with zombies or going down a mine or even take thier shot with a main road if the combiens are moving alot of thier force to Whiteforest from all direction. i would give them probably the whole day to arrive to White forest if not more.

Hare is my theory but I wanna say that this includes Epistole 3.
So ita clear that G Man likes Alyx. We know that he takes her with him in epiatole 3. Mainly becouse she can be easily manipulated now when her father is dead. Its possible that after he takes her, he sends her back in time (in HL Alyx) where he shows her the future and what will happen to her dad. There she agrees to save Eli and work for G Man making a paralel universe (the HL Alyx ending) or changing time as a hole.
By all means Gorden is brought back (in the HL Alyx ending) remmembering everything that happened in Epistole 3. This will explain why Gorden ( us the player as him ) feel so shocked and confused about all of this.
I also wanna mention an alternative approach:
In epistole 3 the G Man may have made Alyx to expiriance HL Alyx in her mind but also like that manegin to change the past. This will explain why Alyx follows the G Man without worrying in Epistole 3 and also by changing the past Freeman is placed in the HL Alyx ending but unknow if he remmembers what have happened.
Its possible that Barney has met the G man too but this is unknown by us.

Neat video! Really, Barney is an amazing character, and I'd love to see him get more background and story as a whole. I'm perosnally nbot sure about a VR game tho, it will hindrance many players from enjoyinbg the experience firsthand.

Real talk, his character took a back seat to the events of episode two, what with the portal storm, Alyx’s encounter with the hunters, the antlion mines, he really wasn’t needed to tell the story Valve wanted to tell.
However, I’ve got a feeling we’ll see Barney again. I think Valve want to make up for Blue Shift…
yo barney is my favorite hl character and i was so fcking sad he wasnt in episode 2 hence the reason i dont like episode 2 and only played it once. i have some theories as to what happend to him and theyre kinda sad, first one is that g man didnt really follow barney around in blue shift is because gman was working on making sure barney got out of black mesa so that 20 years later he'd stop gordon from going to nova prospekt, and since gman didnt need barney anymore, he got rid of him without raising any suspicion. the second theory is he died, and everyone knows expect gordon, they dont tell him so that they dont make him sad, after going through what he went through, barneys death could break him even more.
There was a Half-Life: Opposing Force sequel in development set in Ravenholm. We need a Blue Shift sequel set in White Forest.

We need a sequel to Blue Shift where you play as Barney during and after episode 2. It could be in the Alyx universe and could be a nice prelude to Half-Life 3. It could start with the part where Barney separates from Gordon and Alyx, then he makes a stop and that's when the citadel blows up. So then the resistance has to make it there on foot. And they could get captured by the combine and a ton of shenanigans could happen. He would return to see grubs (or whatever they are) outside of the white forest base, and they go in and sees through the window where Alyx kills the grub and then G-man and her go away through a G-man portal and Eli yelling about wanting to kill him. Then Barney can come in and be like "I can help with that." Then the credits roll.
Then, since Valve can't count to 3, they could finally make the Adrian Shepard in Half-Life 2 games, where he manages to sneak out of the void with the help of the vortigaunts while G-man is busy trapped in the vault in Half-Life Alyx. Then he goes through the events of episode 1-episode 2 but from a different perspective. Imagine if he starts in Nova Prospekt and gets out just before it explodes. Then maybe he returns to Xen and Ravenholm and then sees the collapse of the Citadel and sneaks on the train with Gordon and Alyx. The game could then end with the explosion and his fate unknown. Then Valve can make Half-Life 3 or just something else

It's strange that they didn't add Barney to Half Life Alyx, Both Alyx and Barney usually help the citizens in City 17 to escape and avoid the combine
Remember that it was originally intended to be a 3-episode series, so we didn't get the full story. My guess is that Barney was probably intended to play a bigger role in the original plans for Episode 3, and his whereabouts during the events of Episode 2 would've tied into that.
I think it would be really funny if it's Barney who ends up killing the G-man. It would be so ironic if the man the G-man paid so little attention to is the one who manages to end him
