Dear sir,I was immensely benifit Ed from your masterclass,I have a small request ,can you pl make a masterclass on the two Rameau piece La Egyptian and le rappel des oiseaux..regards from India
Mr. Wim, Beethoven was precise in the tempo indication of this piece, quarter note = 96, in this Allegro the tempo unit and the metric unit are the same. Please listen to Schnabel great performance and read 'Tempo and Character in Beethoven Music' of Rudolf Kolisch.
I don't think so, but anyway, it is not my purpose to influence anyone, I just share my thoughts and journey on this. Great performances indeed (really) ,but, as I see this, very far away from what I believe the composer might have had in mind. greetings, Wim
+AuthenticSound actually was 80, not 96, anyway this is a very interesting topic and it is good to hear your opinions. Btw, there is a awesome text about it at symposium.music.org/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=1992:on-tempo-indications-based-on-beethovens-music
Valentina Lisitsa should watch this masterclass. She plays everything like a house on fire... including this piece. Something very beautiful is lost with the extreme speed she plays everything.
It always felt awkward trying to play this piece "allegro" and to accentuate the first beat of the measure in the beginning. Thank you for sharing your fantastic insights!

Just started playing. Always loved this song. Your insights are brilliant. It gives me that extra touch of magic to perfect my playing.
