Steinbeck is one of my tippy top favorite authors, and East of Eden is one of the few books I’ve read twice. All of the Steinbeck works I’ve read have explored the US (and the Americas) through the pov’s of people who are typically swept under the rug. He seemed to make his life’s work an attempt to give these people a voice, to not celebrate or condemn them, but to bring their lives into focus. I love so much that you explore why you don’t like a book. ❤ Also, I’m totally going to grab onto your coattails and can’t wait to start the Wayward Pines series! I really like Black Crouch’s books, especially Recursion, so this series sounds great!
Very fair assessment if I’m Thinking of Ending Things. 😊 I was on a Foe high when I read it so I was good with it. 😂 I am TOTALLY with you on unsettling books. One I read and really enjoyed this month was The Watchers by A.M. Shine (a movie was made from it as well - I have not seen it and it wasn’t well received). As another commenter mentioned, Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is unsettling as well. I swear for the first 50 or so pages I was almost anxious. Highly recommend! I did not enjoy Recursion as much. Will DEFINITELY read the Wayward Pines series this year!!
I need to read East of Eden too! Great thoughts on Curious Beginning. I too had a hard time liking Veronica Speedwell and don’t want to continue on in the series for similar reasons. Agreed on Bishops memoir too, not enough magic to make it amazing. Love seeing a historical fiction at the tippy top. Now that book is on my radar 😊
You had an interesting month with lots of variety. I liked Grapes of Wrath more than East of Eden. I also enjoy Veronica's intelligence a lot. And the banter between Stoker and Veronica is fun! I had a good month with mostly good or very good reads. I read 14 books!! A Song for Arbonne by Kay was the best! It's enough like historical fiction that I think you'd like it even though it's fantasy.
I also read A Curious Beginning and I loved it!!! I didn’t find Veronica obnoxious or rude. I’m excited to continue the series! I also read The Third/Gilmore Girls and adored Kelly’s story!! I went into wanting to know more about the woman-Kelly-not the character-Emily so that probably made a huge difference in how I read it and enjoyed it!!
Great video❤ I love historical so will read Mistress of the Ritz. I’m a Steinbeck fan, East of Eden my fav and grapes of wrath is close To me recent books are an easy read and I forget about them You won’t forget Steinbeck novels, and most classics, they are memorable and thought provoking. Steinbeck tells the story as it is and life is not always pretty. Love the Yearling and again, real life back in that day.
I picked up Pines off my parents' bookshelf in December and could not put it down. I sat down to read the first couple chapters or so with my coffee in the morning, and the next thing I knew, I was halfway through the book!
The Grapes of Wrath is one of my top 10 lifetime favorites. East of Eden is long, and I have read it twice and liked it best the first read. The movie is good.
I think you are better off reading East of Eden rather than The Grapes of Wrath given your reasons for disliking OMaM. The hardships of the depression play such a huge part of TGoW and East of Eden is very different. Have you read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch? If you haven't I think you will like the weird story. It is my husband's favorite book and I liked it, but not as much as he did. I had a really good reading month. I read several books including These Truths by Jill Lepore for my US history project and it was excellent. I also read I Who Have Never Known Men and I have so many thoughts about the meaning of the story. I liked it because I will be mulling over the book for a long time.
Deanna Raybourn... Silent in the Sanctuary. Lady Julia Grey got me hooked on Deanna Raybourn. I liked Lady Julia better than Veronica. I still want to finish the Veronica series.
Unsettling...weird? If you haven't read Geek Love by Katherine Dunn be prepared. Like nothing I'd ever picked up up before. But beware, you'll soon be rooting for some of these completely off the wall characters. Happy reading
Bougie, Funny what you think. Watched a show called " The Pitt" the other night S1,E4. Stupidly woke, but a Fairly good representation; it is TV so it all ends well. Not quite the mind numbing exhaustion and hopelessness in the middle of the night reality though. Depicted the 4 minute race against time well. Steinbeck is that point where the earth and everything you thought would hold fell away. Not to be overly dramatic but the Joads leaving Oklahoma is etched in the American consciousness of the last generation. (REC: Audible, The Passenger, Stella Maris)
Of Mice and Men is my least favorite Steinbeck. East of Eden and Cannery Row are much better. I loved Grapes of Wrath but again it's about the dustbowl so it's a little grim too.
Isn't it odd that what one person loves others hate. 😊I love Steinbeck. I gave both Of Mice and Men and East of Eden 5 stars. I just love his writing. I am older than you and that may have something to do with it. I just don't know.

Born a Crime is maybe in my top 10 favorite ever, the audio is so good!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Wayward Pines - Dark Matter is on my TBR.
I need to read East of Eden too!

❤️❤️❤️
What moves the dead by Kingfisher is unsettling. It’s her own version of Poe’s House of Usher. Much more sci-fi .
I mentioned Rabbits in your wayward pines video
❤❤❤🎉
