  • Responding to a question from an Oggie, here is hooking up your modern rig to a computer and using WSJT-X. We use the IC-7300 reference station as the example rig, and the computer is a 64-bit Win10 machine. Feel free to comment with additional suggestions. 73!

Dave, I think you missed a very critical part of the WSJT-X setup. In the setup screen don't you need to go to the "Audio" tab and set the input and output sound cards to be those in the radio and not the default Windows audio devices? If you don't do this I believe WSJT-X will be sending the audio to the default Windows device and trying to decode from the default Windows audio input device which is usually a microphone if you have one on your machine. On an IC-705 which is all I have to test with these are labeled "USB Audio CODEC".

One of the things I learned when using my IC-7300 for multiple scenarios is....save settings to the SD card for any configured modes that are different from the default behavior. That way once you figure different things out you can recall the file so you don't forget something.

The 7300 works well in split mode dave. It keeps your harmonics out of the transmission. Kinda necessary, especially when you blare out ft8 at a near criminal 50 watts. LOL :P

Hi, Dave. One of the features of firmware version 1.40 is a setting specifically for FT8. This allows rapid switching between FaT8 and other modes. I’ve been using it and it is very convenient. BTW, tell us about your plane. Thanks. 73 N6###

Dave, you only did half the video... you talked about needing to set up the IC7300 for rig control but never actually showed the settings needed. Also as mentioned you didn’t go into the audio set up in the Menus to show the software where to receive and send sound.

Could you please do a small series on the various digital voice modes and getting them set up for a DVMega (or similar) hotspot and what features you may lose by running them with a hotspot vs a radio and/or repeater thanks and have a great day

I have found that if you ask ten people, you will get ten answers of how to do it. I had thought that it was as simple as ABC and 123 but I found found that it was not. It does not make any sense but I find that others have had the same experience. Take away is to keep asking questions and when you find the EXACT solution that works.... STAY WITH IT. I had mine up and running just fine with the 7300 connected to my PC along with WSJT-X and Gridtracker so that FT8 was humming right along with many QSOs. Then one day, things did not work. Hoping to get things running again as FT8 is quite the bit of fun. Wanting to give FT4 and a few other modes a shot.

Are there any settings in the radio setup menu we should be concerned with?

I have a timing problem. One of the videos gave a thing to use to set it but when I tried it, it didn't look like he showed in the video and it didn't set my time so I uninstalled it. So I still have a trouble with the timing.

It’s the same cable that is used for an HP printer. It’s the very original USB cable. The end that goes into the computer is a type a at the end that goes into the printer is type B. Hope that helps.

Anytime anyone says that you need to install a driver to do anything, that should be a big red flag. Drivers often get outdated which makes your hardware useless. Also, in most cases, an installed driver is completely unnecessary. When are hardware/radio manufacturers going to stop doing this to us?

FT8 may be a easy mode to do but I myself find it very boring..Give me psk, ssb, or even cw any day of the week..I deleted my ft8 software over a year ago after doing it a week or 2..
