Thanks! I upgraded from V4 to V4EX - and didn't regret it. Strong pros: - No upscaling device needed (if you want to use a capture card instead of re-scanning). -The WAY better tbc if you are working on glitched video stuff
I didnt get much of a chance to put much glitched out stuff through mine sadly (only borrowed it for a week from a friend) but it definitely handled signal loss gracefully, which is a big + when you are using old gear that sometimes has a split second hickup every once in a while
You move the output preview window by using the touchscreen on the device. Same for moving around Picture-in-picture; which you can do with live sources to produces feedback trails. 😲
I've been kind of interested in the VR-4HD as well, has anyone used one in a video glitch context? I don't love that there is no manual control over the fades, but it ticks a lot of other boxes specs wise.
@@catfullofghosts4478 that would certainly make it better. Weirdly the manual says midi over USB is a thing but never lists the implementation chart anywhere I could see. Spam every cc and see what happens I guess.
@@politesociety there isnt a menu on the device that lets you set the controls? Edirol dont use a standard midi implimentation sadly. It’s either programable, or some weird fixed thing that could be notes, cc
@@catfullofghosts4478 I did end up finding the midi chart for it, and on top of most things being sysex based, i could only see fade time as an option, no direct control of the fader itself. I don't have the device so not sure entirely what's in the menu, but it didn't look promising. Not that fader control is the most important thing ever. There is sysex control of chroma key options though...
I got one for a really good price at B&H! My only gripes are that you don't have the ability to switch which effect is active like on the V4, and that the USB streaming output is at 720. Fortunately, the HDMI output can get up to 1920. I was also able to get the streaming USB output to show up as a video capture device in OBS on Windows 10. May be a driver issue? 🤷
I've been using these units for years and never knew you could scale the output with the value knob, but I do know you can move the output around with your finger using the touchpad!
I am happy with the v4ex. When i do shows i use two mixers chained together and the picture quality is much better than using the analog v4 as an output. My computer looks crisp and clear through the EX, rather then blurry, when i had to use a downscaler with the analog. One bad thing is that i cant get my new computer to play nice with the EX. My old computer from 2012, 14? Works fine. Im thinking it is a driver issue. If anyone knows a fix that would be dope.
Great review! I have both and even though I really like the convenience and the much better tbc in V-4EX, the real analog feedback of the V-4 is much richer and interesting than both digital and pseudo analog feedback from the V-4EX. I've managed to get one relatively cheap on the ebay, but the touchscreen isn't functional which is quite a bummer and I haven't found any place where they sell spare ones.
thanks 😆 yeah, V4 feedback has a lot more visual appeal to me without the need for extra video fx in the feedback path. As for spare parts, I have had a lot of luck with: www.roland.com/uk/support/spares/ they pointed me to someone in my part of the world for Edirol/Roland V1 from 2004 replacement parts. They were a bit $$ but they were genuine parts, so.
Thanks!

Yay! Love these vids, learned loads from previous ones
A new favorite channel - love the intro and the whole aesthetic.
Awww thanks!!!

oh what!???? I didnt even think to try that 😂
Another great video! Learned some things about this mixer I've been using for years, cheers!

Never got the chance to use one. I wonder if you could use usb midi to drive the fader manually

@@politesociety mmmm... yeah, I have a V1 that uses SYSEX as the only way to turn on midi control of channel inputs 🥲, its a big bummer

the switching effects issue, is something i may be working on 🤫

Oh cool! How did i miss that 😂
There was a bstock v4ex on ebay for $300 like 3 hours before this video came out. RIP
🥲

Pc computer? If anyone works out how to use the usb video or the usb midi on a modern pc plz tell us
Have you ever watched Bad Gear?? This is like video version!!
Oh yeah. Thats true 😂, similer-ish vibes. Thats a flatering comparison

If theres one thing i know about them is that there are people selling them for 100 euro once in a while
that is WILD cheap!!! How lucky can you get!
