- Everything you need to know about The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love." |
"Our World" coincided with the height of the Beatles' popularity and influence, following the release of Sgt. Pepper. Even The Beatles, who were seldom overawed by anything, were a bit bomb-happy about the challenge of coming up with something good in such a short time. They worked best under pressure, and the track was written especially for the broadcast.
Brian Epstein stated the following regarding "All You Need Is Love": 🗣️ "I've never had a moment's worry that they wouldn't come up with something marvelous. This is an inspired song, because they wrote it for a worldwide program and they really wanted to give the world a message. It could hardly have been a better message. It is a wonderful, beautiful, spine-chilling record."

This is the debut of our new narrator, Caetano; hope he passed the audition! Please leave a like and comment below! ☮✌
He did a great job!
Just one minor thing...sometimes the narration didn't match the text exactly. Not a complaint, just an observation. My wife always said I should have been a professional proofreader.
I was hoping for Samuel L. Jackson, or James Earl Jones, but it'll do.
Nice job lad. RNB
he's annoying, please go back
I commend his efforts but feel like the narrarator is a little dramatic. I'd prefer an older, male voice similar to Attenborough. I appreciate the youth and playfulness this narrator brings though.
The chord sequence in this song still blows me away. The fact that they build up a V (D) chord only for it to have a key change in D major is just genius. And how it just goes back to G major via the III-vi (B7-Em). Simply mind-blowing stuff for such a simple song.
John Lennon always dove in and out of different key sigs and made it sound seemless
Steve Race, narrator of Our World/BBC employee on working with the Beatles for the Our World broadcast:
"The four Beatles had been assembled on a sort of fountain in the middle of the studio…I had a few words with each of them in turn. What was the song called? Whose idea had it been? (’His,’ they said, pointing to each other). And then I put the question to John that was intriguing me. Ninety-five percent of all popular music is in 4-time, but there was more than a hint of unfamiliar 7-time in ‘All You Need is Love.’ ‘Did you know your song was in 7-time?’ I asked. I still remember the cool, serious look he gave me as he replied ‘Yes, I know.’ Then he indicated Paul, adding ‘-but blame him."
This arguably could have been the absolute peak of the Beatles. However, a couple of hundred thousand people didn't get a chance to see it live in the central Ohio area. I was 16 in 1967 and at the time there was only four TV channels to watch. The channel that would have played it was a PBS channel. Instead of carrying the Our World program, they opted to play an opera singer instead. They promised to record it and play it the next day which would be like recording the Super Bowl and playing it the next day after the game was over. After all this time I'm still pissed. Lol
I saw the show live that night. To this day, All You Need is Love is my favorite Beatles song.
That's so beautiful ❤❤❤
At the age of 16 I was
able to watch as well -
Absolutely thrilling and
unforgettable moment
in Summer of Love 67.
Message still valid 🕊️
Nice
A nostalgic picture - Summer of love, the Beatles at the peak of their creativity, Lennon's last moments as the group's leader and the imminent death of the band's manager.
@@lennon1252 easy, baby! Im more John's than Paul's but...
@@lennon1252 Paul could not do without John and John could not do without Paul. Ringo once said that if it was not for Paul, the band would have only made three or four records. This being sad, I think that John was the main driving force in the first half, while Paul became the driving force in the second half when John lost more and more intrest in the Beatles. Though for, the peak of the Beatles would be 2 years later with Abbey Road.
Everyone including John knew Paul was taking over and John wanted him to. Paul just did it but in the recent doc even Paul admits he really doesn't want it either. I mean it got so much bigger then from the days they really did want to be four Elvises performing rock covers for beer money in dive bars.....
What a brilliant song .... Lennon was on fire in 1967 .....
I think the acid opened up his creativity.. (Even more so)
She Said She Said,
Strawberry Fields
Tomorrow Never Knows
@@gostrum1 didn't know of She said she said & got to hear it thanks to your comment. great tune, indeed
@@TheNightdiver absolutely 👌
Lennon was on fire for it all. It was his band since day one. At some point he felt trapped and wanted to be married to Yoko instead of his blokes.... but he was still on fire again up until the dreadful thing in NYC... Granted he had a much needed break period to find himself.... or whatever.
@@gostrum1 Yes I believe the Acid was a good thing because he knew how to use it properly ... He knew as an artist it was his responsibility to express his experiences and emotions in his work .... that's musically and lyrically.
'Tomorrow Never Knows' is a good example of that .. who else would/could be brave enough to write a song with one chord that has no chorus ?!
The Acid made him reject commercial values and helped him channel his artistic visions into music ....
Great work, Caetano! 🎉
Paul's alternative song was 'All together now'.
Could be. Those type songs all seemed to end up on Yellow Submarine. Regardless, I like the entire soundtrack granted it is objectively not one of their strongest.
Gus does a beautiful job of narration, but the new voice was VERY well done! Now I want to listen to this song again❤
Caetano did a very good job!!! Props to both of you for your work!
You forgot Donovan was there too
Donovan was povital in teaching john about fingerpicking.

You sound poverty stricken
That's the best Brian Epstein impression ever! 😂😂😂😂
The problem of Geoff Emericks memories, is that you have to take them with a grain of salt.
I am pretty sure John is chewing gum while being filmed singing all you need Is Love which may show his casual attitude towards the whole event......
John Lennon 🎶All You Need ls Love 🎵 as he used to beat his girlfriends
That's why Yoko is hard on the eyes! 😲
I so love all these stories. Keep them coming.
❤❤❤
The lines “All you need is love”. “All you really need is love’, are spoken by the actress with William Holden in the beach scene of the 1957 movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.
I now wonder if the award winning movie played a part in the creation of the lyrics.
Sounds like an upright bass
On the subject of "All You Need Is Love," Hunter Davies once asked John Lennon about the song title and John explained that the title could be taken in two ways. At one level "All You Need Is Love" could mean that love is the most important thing in the world, but it could also mean that love is the one thing you're lacking and haven't got.
And/or both?
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also i like the new voice ❤😊
4:57 no... not at all. They were taking the piss. It's a great move actually.
The BBC's "the world via satellite" was a bit "colonial Empire"... so, starting the proceedings with "La Marseillaise", so French, so "not English" and then singing... "There's nothing you can do that can't be done" is brilliant. John was denouncing national feelings of superiority. John, in Imagine, argues against nations... I think that's going too far, I believe in national equality. But, this move is very choice to John's believe I think.
I don't know if the BBC played the Marseillaise very often before then. 🤣
It makes the whole even relevant still today.
Poor Brian; maybe it wasn't an accident.
Georges 3 originals at this point in 1967 were all written on one type of a keyboard or another. His only real guitar solo on Sgt Peppers was on Fixing a Hole. His rhythm guitar work was solid as ever. But on All You Need Is Love, his guitar solo sounds 'rusty'. He went so far as to request a separate channel just for his solo. Seeming to anticipate the possible need for a redo. Unfortunately, he was right. His full guitar chops returned on the White Album and was never an issue again throughout the rest of his life. RNB
Who did the solo for 'Hey Bulldog' ?
@@Tom-hk6ubGeorge. This guy's talking out his arse.
@@Tom-hk6ub Hi Tom. That may be one of the last unsolved questions remaining on the 'who plays what' questions regarding the Beatles. I lean in the "John" category. When watching the Bulldog footage, George is always seen playing the chords or the riff. John, who wrote the song on piano, is seen giving George back his Gibson S G. Why would John have George's guitar? My reasoning is John never brought his. He didn't need it. So, it's possible George wasn't feeling it. Also, the 7ths played in the solo are very similar to the ones played by John in his solo on You Can't Do That. Speculation? Absolutely. As for George being 'rusty'. You can really hear his guitar playing on the Esher tapes really nicely coming back to form. Never looked back after that. But, alas, it's just one man's opinion. Cheers, RNB
Paul played solo on Fixing, box set outtake has no George present
@@PaulFormentos Hey user. Hard to argue with the box set! My understanding is the basic track was recorded at Regent Sound (who kept no studio notes on the session. Opening the door for this conversation). The line up on the rhythm track recorded that night reportedly had Paul/Harpsicord George/Electric guitar and John/Bass. Upon returning to EMI, The Beatles sang their vocals and Paul recut Johns Bass. If the Box set is correct, Paul also redid George's guitar work. This would make the finished backing track just Paul and Ringo. Not sure I am ready to buy that. But by this point, Paul recutting George's riffs/solo is always a possibility. If I am wrong, sadly it won't be the last time. Take care, RNB
Has anyone read the book; The Beatles, shout in their Generation by a Phillip Norman? This book was written in 1981.I’ve alway’s wondered where he got all his information for this book?📕 Maybe,he did a lot of 🔬 research?🧐 It was one of the best book’s about the Beatles that I had ever read!😊
I read Shout also when it first came out n thought it was excellent! It had a lot of 'behind the scenes" info n tidbits that- to this point- we hadnt heard before.
@@johncook8720No. It's an absolutely dreadful book written by someone who none of the Beatles actually liked.
A good book, but way too Lennon biased
Okay,but I did read this book 📕 a long,time,ago!It was during the(early)nineteen eighties.I have a few other book’s as well.There from;those British paper’s,the London Times.But,these are picture book’s,that I’m talking about,here.The more recent one was by;James Patterson,which is called Lennon.
Fans have little appreciation for that book not only for its fictionalized episodes but also for being sensationalist and biased. It is in the same league with Albert Goldman's 'The Lives of John Lennon'. It was the narrative of the eighties.
Nice voice, Caetano!
Great piece history..,Wish actual performance again..
All you need is love.... granted being broke still sucks.
That was great, really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work.
They did a good job playing live but, actually George could finish his solo properly.
Terrible voiceover. Sorry, these AI voice overs are awful . The inflection in the voice is grating. Using AI might be convenient but its a real drain to listen to.
Once Ringo and Paul are gone we might not have a single person alive from the Beatlemania era to confirm or deny anything. Thankfully we do have a metric butt ton of video and audio.. but still it is nice to have living 1st hand witnesses around.
Instead of playing one of their tried and true singles they just wrote a great song for the occasion.
My mother sat the family down in front of out black and white TV to watch Earth's first satellite broadcast. She said she used to really like the Beatles in the old days but that they had "all gone to pot." I was eight years old and I remember this show like it was yesterday.
WAS 9 YRS.OLD, AND HAD 4 TEENAGE SISTERS AT THE TIME.THIS EVENT WAS SO BIG ,EVERY RADIO STATION TUNED IN "AM"..IT WAS MAGICIAL
were are the beatles in that photo at 0.50 see if we got proper fans on here
Hello Caetano
And you didn't play the song why?
Really Enjoyed This
It’s Siri’s brother narrating
This doesn't seem quite right. It says that the vocals were live, but they were "pretending" to play their instruments, and that this was a last-minute decision by George Martin. First of all, it would seem to contradict the earlier statement that Martin wanted the whole thing mimed, but had gotten overridden by the group, with the note that by then Martin had no real authority. So how would Martin have been able to impose this change, when the group had unequivocally stated that they wanted to play live? Also, it's pretty well documented that George did in fact make a mistake at the end of his solo, which was either cut-out or re-recorded (I've heard both). So I think it's pretty clear that they really were playing their instruments (except for Ringo), on top of the pre-recorded backing track.
Not EP-STEEN. It is pronounced EP-STINE.
Or even Ep Shtine. That’s how we learned to pronounce “Stein” in German.
His family preferred to pronounce Eps - teen.
Wasn’t Donovan one of those;”flower children,”too? Not many of these people are alive, now! They’re dying off. But,I should talk…..half my High School 🏫 Class is gone, now. We only have sixty one or sixty two people left!😊
That's a nice jolly thought Betty. Thanks for sharing.
Donovan is alive and well, looking fabulous, still wearing caftans, very long white hair and eyeliner.
He really pulls it off❤
Okay,I’m sorry 😞 that I offended anyone! But,I didn’t know that Donovan was still alive?Yeah, thank’s for reminding me!We did wear caftans,as well!I’m certainly glad the long look 👀 in fashion came back!It would hide a lot of flaws, now!Ha,ha!Those were the day’s of;lovely entertainment, with;Star Trek,Mod Squad,Batman,The Monkee’s,ect.I’m very sad 😔 that I don’t remember Star 💫 Trek’s premier on t.v.!But,when one was a child 🧒 in those day’s it’s hard to remember everything! My mom 🧑 was right, after all! It’s hard to remember everything in your life!
Good narration, definitely a step forward. I would check the pronunciation of Epstein, it’s ei not ie.
What a load of tosh! Those who wish to put all their work through a microscope are welcome to waste their own time.
I'm on John's side - he always maintained that there were no mystical or any other coded messages in his lyrics.
Having bought all the singles and LPs on the day they were first released, I still believe no one can touch them.
They're all as relevant today as they were back then and I'm quite content just listening to them, rather than analysing them to death.
Geoff Boots.
Many of their songs do convey a message, even if unintended. The message on this song was clearly explicit. John's comments cannot be taken too seriously. He had a way of putting down some of their work, even some of his own work, and he would often contradict himself. He did a lot of trash-talking of the Beatles after the split up, when he was full of bitterness. I always felt it was very disrespectful of their fans. After all, without the fans, there would have been no Beatles, and furthermore, the fans made them millionaires.
9:45 - 10-38 - Brian Compliments the guys, George compliments John.
100 guys! TODAY’S MOVEMENT needs to be All You Need Is Love! Love yourself completely and show/give love to everyone else around you including right wingers or left wingers. LETS SHOW EACHOTHER MORE LOVE. Then our politicians will follow. Because the politicians come from
Us. Let’s honor John.
Paul’s song was All Together Now. They thought it was too much like a nursery rhyme and went with AYNIL.
Did The Beatles get paid any money for their segment on Our World.
Thank U so much for this wonderful story-telling !!! It was such a huge historic event, indeed !!!
Is this about the Packers Quarterback ?
Eagles showed no LOVE
I was born in 1970 and declared them my favorite group before I was ten, and they still are, and my earliest impression of the Beatles really centers around this song. It felt like the quintessential Beatles song, and everything else they were before and after can be viewed through this song, its message, and the images that come from the recording. If that makes sense. It's not their best song, but it's the most Beatlesque.
Thank you so much 4all Informationen. Lg from Germany, Beatles Fan Elli 🌹🕊✌❤
The new guy talks a bit too slowly. I feel his pace lags.
His voice is loud (I had to turn my volume down).
the doing within love is the real part of it
Mart'n not Mar-Tin. Typical of novice would-be narrators who over-pronounce words, putting more emphasis and importance on their voice, rather than the actual content.

He just used the British pronunciation, which is fine by me. After all, George Martin was British.
Gosh i thought i knew all the details about the Beatles and this song after 40 odd years of listening and reading and watching documentaries, But there's a lot of new info here for sure.
On the song i always thought John Lennon was basically taking the piss, and mocking the hippy free love peace stuff there. Certainly lots of their stuff from 67 seems critical of the peace and love and global world kind of views. Listen to those songs they're mostly about their children hood in Liverpool and very traditional English life. Like I think Paul McCartney says about Magical Mystery Tour as a story about one of those popular holiday outings back in the day. On a coach with a mystery destination, that always turned out to be Blackpool.
Thanks for the vid. Way back in the day, my dad was a trumpet player in a dance band, that played Glen Miller stuff, and they supported The Beatles in a concert in October 1963 at Trentham Gardens in Stoke on Trent. By all accounts it turned into a sort of riot with fans going crazy scaling the building and climbing in through upper floor windows and stuff. It was massively reported in the papers for a couple of days just before their televised London Palladium gig. Everyone thinks Beatlemania began either earlier in Liverpool or after from the Palladium gig, but it was at Trentham Gardens October 1963. There is a few minutes of Super 8 film of the gig on TH-cam. My mum was their too pregnant with me. I was born in December.
Thanks for the great vid.
Correction: i only began to think John Lennon and The Beatles were critical of the peace and love thing in the last few years. For most of the time i thought they were fellow travellers with the libertarian hippies, not getting on the bus without a genuine ticket
I don't think they were dissing the peace and love movement. They may have been a bit removed from it living in their ivory towers, but I think they were well-intended. John clearly states in this video that "it's not going to be done just by saying it." So he meant it. Ironic, because he wasn't exactly a peace-maker in his everyday interactions with people, and in fact, had bursts of violence, especially with the opposite sex. He was a very complicated person, possibly bi-polar.
Near the fade out Lennon mutters "Yes He's Dead"
