Ah. Yes. The age old Knights and Wizards rivalry. Even in death, they still hate each other. Dark Souls PVP has proven me that they vehemently hate magic users like me because I magic too much. :(
Why wizards don't just stock up on a bunch of clones with the 'Clone' spell, is beyond me. All the safety of lichdom without the icky business of tracking down and befriending someone to sacrifice later.
@@tannachambers7787 you can only have one active clone at a time and it has to be identical to your original body so it doesn't counter death by natural causes like old age which is why immoral and insane mage's take the path of lichdom.
From the players handbook. Page 222. 'You can also choose to have the clone be a younger version of the same creature.' There is also nothing stated as to the number of clones the caster can have. Death night: You dare to disturb my song!? Bard: Never! *gets out intrament* I wish to give it the respect it, and you, deserve! *plays the accompaniment*
@@Thrudv You'd have to write the death knight's story, then turn it into a song. The song would probably need to be in some form which can be long, but other than that, I don't think there's any set format.
It's a good idea, you can spin it around, maybe you need to learn his song to learn of his identity and it's weakness... or just a permanent way to destroy him.
Yeah, It occurred to me that adventurers would have to listen to the song in order to understand something that happened in the distant past in order to solve some sort of mystery.
@Preston Garvey I guess you assume the person making these videos does not do anything else. Even if that would be true, good for him I guess. But hey man, what about getting your OWN channel consistently growing with videos about a game? Seem easy enough, perhaps you should do it.

@Goliath Online You could make that warlock have to fight honourably or he won't get XP for what he did, as his Patron will refuse him of leveling up, as the Patron has to willingly grant power. It is basically the same as with clerics or pallys that not following their god/oath
This actually is an interesting concept and could potentially give reason for a hexblade warlock to be good-aligned: the DK patron whose soul is within the weapon could have become disenchanted with things but feel too far gone from the light, and now seeks a noble warrior to wield the blade so that its honor can be restored by proxy.

Eh, I'd think that Death Knights of Fallen Paladins are cursed that way because otherwise the result would be FAR worse since instead of a DK which is bound to the rules of that curse, retains his/her honor and is obviously a bad news bears DK; you'd have a living high level ex-Paladin free to continue effing everything up doing heinous shenanigans and probably turning to evil gods or etc. to get his/her divine power fix. Basically the exemplar of DK's, Lord Soth, would be just as powerful or even more so if he wasn't a DK and considering the heinousness of his actions, would have no incentive to stop wallowing ever further in that crapulence such that he eventually wouldn't hope for / want redemption. As a DK though, redemption is explicitly on the table.
Well you are wrong Soth was turn to dk after he didn't follow god's queat because three elven females tricked him. Basically gods decided to throw fire mountain on his world and they told Soth that he can stop it, but he failled, killed his wife and after that, gods cursed him. He wasn't really evil before.
I'm Dming CoS to a group of friends. When we started the group wasn't complet, they all took either support or glass cannons classes, and knowing their tendencies i knew that they wouldn't be able to pass lvl 3... So i added a DMPC, i know, i know, but it was as a tank, he don't really do much outside combat, rarely speak out and never takes decisions for the group, It was a Tiefling Paladin. After a while we got joined by another guy who rolled a Goliath Fighter, so i though, "well no more need for this DMPC, lets get rid of it", but i though to myself that it would be a shame to just, make him dissapear in the mists... The party as grow to like the character since through him i do jokes and commentaries, and then i got the idea... They are close to go for the Amber Temple..., i will be runing the Ambre temple using CoS : Reloaded, cause the vanilla Amber temple is Meh... Knowing 2 of the party members, they will not pass up the chance to make a deal with one of the Vestiges, and i Know one of them is gonna mess something up... So it'll trigger a fight with the Lich/or a defense mecanisme that makes the whole side of the mountain collapse or something. And get my DMPC trapped/killed, while he covers for their escape, in an heroic sacrifice... And when the moment is right, he'll come back as a Death Knight and face them..., oh that will be funny to see their faces...

DMs take note: Paladins don't just simply fall. It has to be something heinous. Something that could lead to them becoming a Death Knight. Not for just being an asshole.
Personnaly, I say that if your character change allinement, you go to oath of redemption for a bit. If you fail your redemption (continue to act like an ashole) then you fall.
@@Alex-gl8li Remember, in 5e Paladins are Oath-based, not Alignment based. Meaning if you break your Oaths, you become an Oathbreaker (but I would argue that it is not immediate, it would be a pattern rising). Too often, DMs seek to IMMEDIATELY hit Paladins with Oathbreaker/Alignment Shift (based on Edition) rather than let it play out. Anakin (using another's reference) didn't fall in Episode 3, that was when he became an Oathbreaker. His fall began in Episode 1 when he started breaking his Oaths for Padme. Even killing the Sandpeople wasn't an alignment shift, it was just his first act of Evil to which he was immediately remorseful of. If you are Evil, you don't feel guilt. You don't feel remorse. You only feel those if you are still Good. (Neutrals don't give a FUUUUUUUCK when you are looking at the G/E side.)
Salamanders would be great to know more about. They are my favourite elemental and they have an interesting history with efreet and azers. Great video as always!

I grew up on Dragonlance, specifically Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's books, which involve Lord Soth. They're absolutely worth looking into for inspiration for a Death Knight.
He also had Ice Wall, Shadow Walk, Raise/Control Undead, Bixby's Fist...and, most likely more. Lord Loren Soth was a Death Knight amongst death knights.
Soth was one of the strongest beings in Dragonlance. Also from what i recall, he didn't kill his wife and child himself as the blurb in the death knight description says. He simply refused to save them when his castle began to burn. (Edit: elven wife and child. He definitely had his first killed)
@@bananorn00 he also had to relive his crime via the elven banshees telling and retelling his tale night after night after night and the only woman he truly loved was kitiara uth matar whose dragon mount skie also known as khellendros had developed feelings for her as well.
Lord Soth actually murdered his wife to marry an eleven maiden he rescued, and then failed to stop the Cataclysm due to his own insecurity. As he and his wife died in fire, she cursed him to undeath. Read the dragonlance books, specifically the Twins Trilogy which contains Soth's account
If i remember correctly, she cursed him to live a life for every one he destroyed. You're going to have to kill that guy a lot of times before he stays down.
Awesome characters. I love their origins. That being said, they pale in comparison to the One God. I know they came back at one point, too, but I do not recall how.
They were a fun start for Descent into Avernus, one of my players is a cleric of Kelemvor so he got some cool moments with dead three followers on their interpretation of death.

MrRhexx: Why does a Death Knight's blade deal additional necrotic damage? Me: It's because they undivine smite, right? MrRhexx: It's because the paladin's soul resides in that sword. Me: So they just stack the divine smite on top of that necrotic damage, then? *Takes notes for my table's upcoming Deathknight fight*
Now I'm imagining playing a Death Knight PC, one of the fallen Paladins trying to undergo a life of redemption. Lots of good roleplaying opportunities there. I think I'm gonna prepare that character right now, just in case a DM ever lets me do that
Alternatively, you could play an Undying Warlock sworn to serve a Death Knight that's trying to redeem themself by sharing their power with you. Kind of a "life coach", or rather "undeath coach" I suppose, trying to help them be a better person and do good to repay what they've done wrong.
I actually ran one that was a Paladin of Pelor. Didn't remember that he was dead, never took off his helmet. Was a hammy goodie-two-shoes hero with constant headaches. His identity got revealed when a giant smacked his head off with a hammer, and he went to pick it up. Long story short, a wizard once found him and stuck the Helm of Alignment-Shifting on him, with a hypnotic suggestion to never take off the helmet, unless something bad would happen. Headaches were a result of Pelor not liking undead. He ended up finally dying whaling on the BBEG, and was laid to rest redeemed in Pelor's eyes.

In 3.5 they were templates that you add to a creature (assumes humanoid but never explicitly stated if I remember right). They also gave the only way, as far as i have been able to find, to gain undead turning immunity. The biggest gameplay weakness for undead was not a factor for the deathknight.

I wouldn't mind hearing more about the Yuan-ti. They are my favorite race in the setting, and it honestly surprises me how little most DM's I've met know about them, and how dismissive they are of them as a whole, cause there is so much cool stuff about them.
I will not be satisfied until you've covered everything there is to cover in D&D. I have never played it and just started listening to your videos when working because it was really interesting. I can safely say that I am very much addicted at this point.
The most powerful and sad story of Death Knight was Lord Soth. It was beautiful and tragic. He wasn't just regular death knight though. He was death knight that was able to command other death knights. And the truly sad part is Lord Soth wishes to redeem himself and not be a death knight, but it is futile hope as he is forever cursed to relive his fall every night and be told his story by banshees. :)
I listen to these videos all the time. Usually when I’m exercising. Your work is very appreciated. Definitely my favorite dnd lore channel. I started playing a little over 30 years ago when I was still in elementary. We had the core books in the library so when you pull lore from the ancient editions, I scream like a little girl inside. I believe a death knight's song is sung by banshees. These banshees used to be the people who committed evil acts that helped bring about the knight's fall from grace.

All of your lore video are fantastic. But I haven't been this blown away since the asmodeus video. Really incredible work. Your videos are watched and shared whenever they come out, thank you for the busy month! Maybe one on the arch-devils and their respective levels? Definitely enough there to group together in broad sense or you specific enough 1 per video. Anyways, excellent work, your effort pays off in droves. Thank you again.
Great video. I like the idea of a Death Knight PC that actually seeks its own redemption. They have to do something heinous and horrible to fall, but as we all know the redemption arc trope is alive and well and good storytelling. A Zealot Barbarian that was literally too angry to die would be a good one. Or a once Lawful Stupid Paladin of justice who had a backwards view of justice.
Death Knights are some of my favorite monsters, and this video makes me like them even more. I want to run a game with one as the main antagonist now. BTW I'm loving the increased frequency of videos, but don't overwork yourself. As for suggestions for monsters, how about Yugoloths, Allips, or Astral Dreadnought? Or some of the planes that aren't really mentioned in detail in 5e, such as Pandemonium, Gehenna, or Elysium.
Hey man, let me start by saying this channel is great and I love watching your stuff. So much so that I'm pleading with you; don't burn yourself out doing this. Your videos are worth waiting for. If you can, please, take your time, enjoy what you're doing, and keep doing it as long as you can even if you make fewer videos. As for monster videos I'd love to hear more about my favorite monster, myconids. But really? I'd love to hear about ways to achieve immortality that are well outlined in D&D materials. I love the idea of playing characters whose goal is to achieve immortality by good and/or evil means.
I wanted to ask why is necromancy evil people are afraid of necromancy they're not afraid like of pyromancy. there scared of someone resurrecting the deda but not of a person capable off burn down their house in a Snap of a finger. Why?
Because instead of just killing you; necromancers are able to kill you, bring you back for purposes of servitude, and then do whatever they wish with your slowly decaying corpse.
Because while a pyromancer could burn your house down, they could also create the fire you use to cook food, or forge metal, or keep you alive in a freezing environment. It’s like asking why people aren’t afraid of kitchen knives. Sure, you could get stabbed by one, but that not it’s only, or even primary, purpose. Necromancy on the other hand is used almost exclusively by people with bad intentions, and the magic that is used usually comes from planes that are evil. You could use a zombie to protect a village, but for every one necromancer who is “good” there are a few dozen bad ones. Plus, undead not controlled by a master (excluding ones like liches or vampires) inherently seek to kill any living thing it finds. It’s just what they do.
That might be some other early DnD monster. I actually homebrewed an Undead Barbarian called a Draugr. Think what'd happen if you fused a Wight with a Barbarian and gave it a good dose of PURE RAGE!!!! Sorry for the yelling, that was just me illustrating how they'd say everything. Like a Zombie with Undead Rabies. They can come about a couple ways. When a Barbarian goes through the same thing a Wight did, making a deal with a Dark power of Undeath to fight forever, or they're revived by a powerful necromancer. The most prominent way though would be through a rage so potent that they literally just get back up and fight beyond the point of death. Needless to Say, Draugr are powerful. Not as Strong as a Death Knight, but they also have a similar undead servant thing to their Life Drain like a Wight. I made them based on the Norse equivalent of the Zombie. Honestly it helps embody the Norse's affinity with being flipping metal. Their zombies don't shamble about mindlessly looking for food, they run at you swinging a weapon half as big as a car. You try beating that with a Lucille. He'll beat you with sword that'd stop a train. Have fun.
@@sorenr6080 I made it to fit a Northern Skyrim type setting? Some advice, if you want to use the Skyrim Type Draugr, use a Wight's stat block and replace their zombies with Skeletons and give them Cold Resistance. The Draugr Deathlord would be a Wight with better equipment, more damage, and a few magical abilities like Dragon shouts.
@@sorenr6080 you're welcome. I've also been working on some Voodoo stuff. Dr Facilier is my favourite Disney villain and Baron Samedi is cool so I'll be making that aspect prominent. I'll always have a soft spot for deathknights. My cousins had a ton of early edition d&d stuff so when i'd stay there over the summer while my parent worked i'd read the manuals as well as all the old dragonlance books and one of my favorites was Knight of the Black rose where Lord Soth was pulled into ravenloft and is quite unhappy about it. I love this one, any ideas on a good song for a death knight?
@@Thrudv You'd have to write the death knight's story, then turn it into a song. The song would probably need to be in some form which can be long, but other than that, I don't think there's any set format.
It's a good idea, you can spin it around, maybe you need to learn his song to learn of his identity and it's weakness... or just a permanent way to destroy him.
Yeah, It occurred to me that adventurers would have to listen to the song in order to understand something that happened in the distant past in order to solve some sort of mystery.

Death Knight's soul weapon sound like a really inspiring hexblade warlock patron choose.

DMs take note:
Paladins don't just simply fall. It has to be something heinous. Something that could lead to them becoming a Death Knight.
Not for just being an asshole.
Personnaly, I say that if your character change allinement, you go to oath of redemption for a bit. If you fail your redemption (continue to act like an ashole) then you fall.
Does enslaving children count?
Except usually a player being a "asshole" in D&D would usually get you life in prison IRL.
like slaying all the younglings?

I grew up on Dragonlance, specifically Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's books, which involve Lord Soth. They're absolutely worth looking into for inspiration for a Death Knight.
Lord Loren Soth also had Power Word: Kill at his disposal.

Great video as always. Would LOVE to see a video about Rust Monsters sometime in the future!
Idontno6 D Astral Dreadnaught? When did he do that? You mean the Astral Dragon?
he might not have. I looked it up and I didn't find it. I thought I edited my comment, I'll do that now
Hey man, let me start by saying this channel is great and I love watching your stuff.
-Mark there were more zombie guards here before did you recast the control undead spell before 24 hours were up
-Ummmmm
People fear what they dont understand. And as death is often cited as the greatest mystery, it just makes sense.
I love your videos! ive been playing this game 30 years and im still learning new things. Thank You!
Theoretically, could my Human Barbarian become a death knight?
Have fun.
@@Master_E444 Thank you so much, I actually forgot about draugrs :( But they are actually perfect for my barbarian, since he hails from the north!
@@Master_E444 Thank you so much, You've been a great help!
@@sorenr6080 you're welcome. I've also been working on some Voodoo stuff. Dr Facilier is my favourite Disney villain and Baron Samedi is cool so I'll be making that aspect prominent.
I might include a reflavored and slightly modified Draugr as a revived Tribal Guardian reanimated by the Resident Voodoo expert as a massive powerful but feral guard dog using some talismans, special potions, and a few rituals to the Loa.
Thanks again for reminding me of my summer days in the mid nineties.
I’d you overwork yourself and switch to 2 videos a week I’d be perfectly ok with it. Take a break now and then.
I love your vids. I was wondering if you could do some on specific villains like Lord Soth, Acererak, Strahd, Xanathar, Tiamat, etc. There is so much information about them it’s astounding and I think you’re the best person to present it
Considering he only covers Forgotten Realms specific lore I don't think we'd ever get Lord Soth, but I agree.
I remember when I used to DM and one of my players said they would like to DM for a bit because it looks easy. I said sure, then I made myself a Death Knight character and convinced him that it just an evil paladin. He never looked into and I taught him a valuable lesson.
Or you might be a little bit of a jerk lol
That's uh... kinda shitty lol, you should have encouraged and helped your friend. Not try and pull a fast one on someone who didnt know any better.
i absolutely love your videos and they gave a much needed depth to my understanding of the various creatures of the d&d multiverse
thank you from the bottom of my heart
Why no Discord, my guy?? Love the content and your coverage of top-tier/epic-level monsters & NPCs, high-level magic and its history, or the new artifact series you have going on now is all some of the best lore research & otherwise uncovered material I have ever come across on my journeys through the TH-cams! So, I sincerely thank you for your contributions to the community... we appreciate all you do!
Thanks Rhexx, was thinking about picking up Death Knight for a 3.5 campaign, so this is great!
Its hard to find a D&D youtuber that does his homework and present the topic in a way that doesnt bore me to death. Thanks for the uploads!
(Sorry about the broken English)
I wasn't expecting a Death Knight video, and I love you for it! Next you could talk about vampires? I've always been curious about specific vampire's lore, like Kas for example.
I have to say. I run a home brew and you have given me so much more to work with.
a while ago I unsubscribed because I never clicked on any of your notifications, I think it was around the time you were doing the space stuff, this video made death knights my favourite creatures in dnd no question, so you earned me back :) good video!
after watching this I have just created the story and background of a death knight I have just put into my world for my players to find and discover the secrets of. Thanks for these videos!
Absolutely fantastic! Best I have seen on TH-cam! Great material.
Your videos are so enlightening about the creatures of DND. Thank you and keep doing such amazing work!
Hey MrRhexx! I'm trying to learn more about Ravenloft and love learning about more Gothic Horror DnD creatures, like the Death Knight, Vampires, Flesh Golems, Lycanthropes, or any DarkLord. Any videos you make on such creatures would be fantastic!
Greatly appreciate the videos, it's my form of podcast when I'm working on the computer.
Suggestion: what they don't tell you about gnolls
(contains 2 suggestions for future videos)
I LOVED this video man :D you made some good memories come back! I used a brooding death knight, soulbound to his cursed castle, against my party for a small Halloween campaign! (and even tho they didn't know about him being able to redeem, they did manage to aid him into attoning! So pleasantly suprised!)
1) I know its cliche but I'd love a video "What They Don't Tell You About Orcs"
its such a common enemy but i feel like most DM's portray them as totally dumb and without reasoning for their actions. They do have a very barbaric and challenging society tho, with different hierarchies inside! :)
2) Also, after you get bored of Creatures Types, how about doing a "What They Don't Tell You About *God's name* " ?!
I'd love to hear the stories of Corellon Larethian and his relationship to Lolth etc, also something most people don't know enough about. Thanks a lot man...
I've been going through the Dragonlance Books and Lord Soth had me very intrigued. Nice to see some Death Knight Lore.
I love your videos. They have given me so many campaign ideas for my current running one. Wish I could Patreon, but hopefully my gratitude is enough. Thank you very much!
I know I'm a year late but.... I subbed and turned on the notifications. Bro long live THACO! I still play Vet 2.5 with my same crew from 25 years ago. On our 9th campaign!
Dude I love this!!! I have been on a death knight kick for like a month now!! Thanks!
Of course I appreciate this!! I've always wanted you to upload more often. I absolutely love your videos. I'm sure it takes a lot of work to put these together so thank you for all you do.
Im pretty sure my dungeon master made a group of knights for the BBEG of the campaign either Death knights or Hell knights, my own paladin only surviving death at the hands of one by divine intervention from his goddess. Super eager to see which way it goes or if it's its own unique element in the future :)
2 rhexx vids in 4 days. What have we done to deserve such a blessing
This is so good gave me an idea for the tail end of my campaign I'm currently running.
I......YOU VIDEOS GIVE ME LIFE MAN YOUR THE BEST DND LORE CHANNEL BECAUSE YOUR QUALITY
I love the Death Knight. Lord Soth was one of my favorites from Dragonlance.
