    No wonder Three disliked the Brigadier at the start of his run, he remembered all of his interactions with him like this and how arrogant he was! What a shock it was for the Brigadier when he saw a lot of sand outside UNIT HQ and he thought that he,Benton & the 2nd Doctor were transported to another country before realizing that they‘re on another planet in anti-matter universe.

    • @julietfischer5056
      @julietfischer5056 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The commentary for the moment he looks out the door consists of whoops of laughter from Manning and Courtney -- partly for the way the set-up required him to spin around to gawp at the camera.
      Why shouldn't he think they were somewhere else on Earth (or even another planet in our universe)? Once he accepted that he was in another universe, he was back in form.

Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines thought it would be funny, so they improvised it in the take, knowing the schedule was so tight that it would have to be left in rather than reshot.

      I’d sooner have low-budget monsters with an entertaining and imaginative story and a well written script than a crummy story with poor characterisation with massive special effects being used to paper over the cracks.

      Alex Hetherington It’s not just a matter of budget. It’s also a matter of time. The scripts frequently demanded quite complex and extravagant things from the designers in terms of sets, props and costumes but, as well as the low budget, they usually only had a finite time to figure out how to do it, make it work and get it in front of the cameras. The turnaround for making an episode of Doctor Who at that time was frantic to say the least, and every 90 minutes worth of Who had only a fraction of the time that a 90 minute movie would take to make. Which inevitably leads to corner-cutting, rush jobs and no time to remake things that didn’t work. It’s rare that things went perfectly, and not uncommon for them to look really bad (such as the Gel Guards from 3 Doctors). It’s certainly not the case that they didn’t think about it. A lot of thought often went into design, but the designers just didn’t have enough time to give it the level of thought that they would have wanted to.
      It certainly wasn’t for lack of talent. The costume designer at the time was James Acheson who, as well as designing Tom Bakers first costume and a number of more successful monsters, has also won three Academy Awards for his costume designs in movies.
      It’s very easy to sneer or poke fun at some of the monsters in classic Who, but I’d love to see modern Who designers do any better with the time, budget and technology that was available back then.

      @@GrilloTheFlightless well that told me.What you said though is exactly my point the designers were probably very good but because of time and budget were very finite and that's one of the reasons why all bbc stuff looks the same.Don't get me wrong I'm a huge fan of doctor who but some of the classic episodes haven't aged well.Now because of how strict the the bbc are doctor who suffered and the same is happening to the modern episodes that's why the ratings are going down and down.Ive seen better effects in other TV shows if the time and with small homemade projects today with smaller budgets.

      In the Troughton story "The Wheel in Space", the Doctor reveals a TARDIS function where the inside appears as that of a real police box from the outside. I just sort of go with that whenever the interior of the TARDIS prop is visible during Classic Who rather than see it as a production error.

      Delicious Kawaiigami A quite literal Omega level event happened. Omega (see: partners to Rassilon later betrayed), was mad at being left behind in an "antimatter" universe while his fellow timelords moved on in the normal universe. To fight back at this he decided to drain their usage of the Eye of Harmony. The Time Lords were able to summon enough power to bring the second doctor forwards in time to his third incarnation but since they were squabbling had to bring the first doctor (still portrayed by William Hartnell in this special) to settle them down. At some point Omega decides to steal the whole of U.N.I.T HQ after transporting the third doctor to his universe but then realizing the second doctor was at U.N.I.T in the T.A.R.D.I.S and couldn't have that. This scene then happens and some other stuff later on including the supposed destruction of Omega and the restoration of not only the usage or the Eye of Harmony but also the Third Doctors dematerialization circuit and his knowledge of time travel along with the codes necessary to do so. Before this restoration the Third Doctor was exiled to Earth in one century sometime around the 70s (you may have heard this referenced in the new series a bit). He then travelled a bit longer as his third self and his other two selves had gone no longer needed for the time being but then after a while he got extremely irradiated and regenerated into his fourth self and then later his fifth where we'd see the return of three and two as well as one (portrayed by Richard Hurndall this time), while four was sort of stuck in time-limbo. The fifth doctor travelled a bit more then regenerated into his clown outfit but had some of the best episodes. One of which being Trial of the Time Lords. Sort of like if the end of the last episode of Troughtons official run had been a full episode instead of a clip. He then regenerated and turned into Mr. First to be Scottish/Seven. Not too much special except for the fancy question mark umbrella. He regenerated into shortest on screen run of a doctor in existence aka Eight, who didn't on his own will regenerate into a Warrior bit forced himself to. The Warrior/The one who broke the promise completed this half regeneration by regenerating into Nine who was absolutely fantastic and should never be skipped. Nine turned to Mr. Shipsfordays McGee aka Ten. Ten got obliterated (good riddance) by radiation and turned to Eleven who although having a horrible redesign of the Daleks in his run and getting an annoying teacher for a companion in his later run. The Lone Centurion thing was pretty good with the companion known as Rory Williams/Pond. Eleven became Twelve via a new set of regenerations granted by the timelords and Twelve although having a bad start got some traction later on. Twelve will come full circle counting down to one and regenerating to Thirteen.

      Thanks for your reply but isn't that kind of too much information? I've been watching doctor who for like eight years. I have seen all of the new series and different bits of the classic series so I have a general understanding of what happened prior. I just wanted to know what was going on in this scene. I already knew the latter half of your reply.
      Clara seemed to have good chemistry with the doctor. They were pretty alike. She even tricked him in Hell Bent.
      And Rory had a heart every guy should have. How many do you think would wait 2 000 years for their lover? :(

      The 2nd Doctor, advised by The 1st Doctor, switched off the force field in the TARDIS causing the TARDIS as well as the entire UNIT HQ building to be transported into the black hole and enter Omega's world.

      The Time Lord Omega sends an anti-matter creature to bring the Doctor to his self-created world in the anti-matter Universe. However the creature couldn't quite transport the TARDIS itself so it settled on the next best course of action: transport UNIT HQ containing the TARDIS. As for the "beach", it's not so much a beach as it is a vast desert. It seems when Omega created his world he didn't bother with flora and fauna, instead he choose just simple rock and sand.
