I've watched so many videos, tutorials, and recordings of professional flute players and YOU by far are THE best I have ever heard. The only other flute player that has stopped me in my tracks like this is James Galway. You, sir, should be recording records for all the world to hear. You're amazing. Mr. Lance this exercise is perfect it helps in so many areas of skill development. I was confused about going back down the arpeggios but I got it today. This also helps me be more attentive to things I ignored before

3/14/2024 I just bought it and this is exactly what I needed to improve my tone. I’ve been learning how to control my lips, breathing and flute level (parallel) to obtain the desired tone with this exercises. So happy with it. Thanks

I have a question: I have trouble with the third octave F#, and I noticed in exercise 3a at 7:04 and in exercise 3b at 9:31, you use your middle finger for the F#, but at 9:39 you use the 4th finger. Of course, both sound glorious but can you explain why? Does it have to do with approach and whether there’s a high G involved? All the best and thanks!
Great question! I use the two fingerings pretty interchangeably. In general, the middle finger F# is slightly lower in pitch. If I was feeling sharp at the time, I probably chose in the moment to use middle finger.
GUYS I NEED HELP!!! My G key is playing a F# and I have a concert in a week and a half. I have no idea why it is doing that and no tutorial is helping me. I have no time to take it to the repair shop because it takes about 3 weeks since where I live theres only one music store in the whole territory. SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASEEE😭😭😭😭
Hey Lance, I like you, so I just spontaneously bought your book so I could play with you. But you went off script! You started doing stuff that wasn’t in the book and you didn’t finish some of the lines that you quoted. I can’t think that fast. That’s why I bought a book. I wonder if you’re going to do this again. I like your book and it sounds nice so far but I’ve only had it for 20 minutes.
Hello, Pamela. Yes, I do plan to do more of these. For these warm up videos, there is a set range. In this case it was low C to high G. The book continues higher (and lower) but I stop when I’ve reached the top/bottom of the range for the video. Of course, you are welcome and encouraged to continue to higher/lower notes. Also, I try to include some tips and practice techniques that are not in the book. Hope you are still enjoying the book. Thanks!

I’ve been using your book on my own for practice, and was thinking about how to help you improve your future play along videos. When you refer to page numbers, it is very helpful. While the student is finding the page number in your book, you could give the student a short pause by relating a musical fun fact to give them time to find the page, just a couple seconds. When you refer to the pre-practice exercise, you don’t state a page number and because there is no exercise number assigned to the pre-practice exercises, it is difficult to quickly find it. I didn’t know what you were referring to at first or where and what section prepratice was, so at least a page number is appropriate guidance probably. That made me get lost for a minute or two on both the C Major, and G videos and I fell behind. Of course I could’ve pause the video but otherwise, I kept up very well and enjoyed playing with you. I suggest that before you make another play-along video, you watch back your own two videos from the point of view of a student and follow along with your own instructions. I mean actually watch and listen and follow your own directions… open your book and go to the sections in real time as you’re explaining … as if you’re not the instructor but the student. If you will do this, I think it will benefit your future play-along videos. I don’t mean this is criticism at all. I think you are an excellent teacher, and that is why I want to play along with you. I would like practice sessions to be a little better organized, though, and a longer. Also, I wish you would pick some more challenging key signatures, like a flat, major or E major. Maybe at least two or three repeats. And warn the student when you are going higher in the scale than is what is on the page in real time. I realize at the beginning of the video you say you were going to go up to high G and that’s great. But in real time, when playing along with you, the page looks like that’s the end of the exercise and perhaps students have a hard time improvising playing those notes that are not on the page itself. For me, I know all of the notes even past high G, but I am not used to thinking about doing those high scales without sheet music in real time. You might say something like, “and now up to high G continuing with …”. Replicating higher scales without sheet music is good practice, but it would be nice if you mentioned you were starting the bushwhacking. If that makes sense. Thanks. @@LanceSuzuki Hi Lance my high f# often cracks down. I am experimenting with aperature and fingering but haven't yet fixed the problem.
