UPDATE: After recording this I gave the stove a complete once over. The connection between the stove and fuel line had damaged o-rings causing a fuel leak. I was however making a mistake when I tried to run the stove since the bottle was upside down in the "off" position, putting the fuel intake at the top of the bottle. This should have caused air to escape from the burner but there seems to be a blockage somewhere. A good thing in retrospect since the o-rings were bad. I replaced the damaged o-rings and tried again without success. That's it for me, major safety concerns with this unit mostly attributed to quality control, but also the overall design.
much appreciated review! I've had the exact same issue with my cooker, the EOE Thorium. Seems to be same product sold under a different brand name here in Germany. Slight difference for the fuel bottle, but pump, stove, bag, repairkit is exactly the same. EOE is a company based in Germany, so I'm speculating that both Fire Maple and EOE got the same cheap overseas supplier. seeing your review cleared my doubts that I was not using it properly. long story short: if you buy cheap, you buy twice. all the best, keep the up the great work!
I went through the same process with the FM lava. Their gas stuff is good though. Not great on the liquid fuel. Anyway, hi! Our channels have a lot in common.
While the performance of the Firemaple was an epic fail, I apprecite your professionalism by not throwing Firemaple under the bus. I also appreciate you took time to troubleshoot the stove. While high price doesn’t always mean “best product”, there are some great products at all price points, in this case case “you get what you pay for” seams to be the appropriate judgment.
We have a nice gas stove in our kitchen and a lot of times I prefer making all types of stews on the Msr whisperlite international stove out on the deck just so I have an excuse to tinker with it and get it to simmer. Might need to get a dragonfly just for that option. Thanks for sharing
Thanks. I have the Firemaple remote canister stove after seeing Justin use it. It’s titanium, lite, somewhat flimsy but has worked well for me a few times in cold weather. I would have considered this until you made this video, good save. Has Justin has any problems with his canister stove? I see he’s doing something different this year an MSR I believe. Let me know if he or you have had that can stove fail in anyway before I go out again this winter. Thanks 😊
I just got my hands on the FM remote canister stove you're talking about. Gonna give it a shot. It was lent to me from a friend since it failed on him at -20C...
Interesting, bummer on it now being 100%. Although my winter back packing stove is heavy, I will never part from it, had over 20 yrs. Its the tried and tested 2 fuel Peak. I am not sure I could make myself use this kind after so long with my Peak .
I like the idea of the stove ... Unfortunately it is plagued with faulty designs and bad quality control. The one thing I really like about the stove is that it can be throttled up and down. If they built the stove to better production quality with that feature, it would be at the top of my to buy list, even if it cost near $150 (I prefer liquid fuel stoves over gas).
I prefer sticking to Robust, durable gear, built to last especially when fuel is involved.... I'll stick with my MSR Dragonfly, Simmerlite and Pocket rocket Deluxe and the warranty behind them 👍

Something I’ve noticed on all my MSR stoves is that the burner was clearly used on a test run. That quality and quality control is what you’re paying for.

Yup, pay a bit more and you get something that almost lasts forever.

Thorough review and +1 for MSR. They have been making amazing stove for decades! Thanks for the video Kane!

The Whisperlite is a lot more quiet though...
Nice review
I have seen this stove used by a thru hiker on the Israel Trail 1000 km
He only had good things to say about it
It never failed him
Quality can change over time...

100% agree on that. Knowing that you can get parts for maintenance is a big factor as well.
When it comes to pressurised fuel, always take the true and trusted route. No way id ever trust this thing
Agreed
You saved a bunch of people $60 bucks and more importantly a potential fire and injury.
It's quite concerning.
only working whit gasolina
Une vraie cochonnerie ce truc comme on dit au Québec. J'ai un MSR XGK et jamais eu un seul prob avec depuis le temps que je l'ai .
There’s an even better word to describe this thing! A real piece of…
