Living Single, created by Yvette Lee Bowser, premiered on FOX in 1993 and featured an all-Black cast of roommates living in Brooklyn, New York. It was an immediate and "unexpected" hit, according to Entertainment Weekly in 1994. I know you already heard me talk about the image the show presented of black people, but that part really cannot be overemphasized. To put that into proper context, all the jobs of the characters on the show include stockbroker, attorney, and magazine editor, as opposed to the representation of people of color in those days.

I wish they reboot it. I loved they were ghetto and rachet. Just 4 classy females that were had great careers. Not degrading themselves.
Just wanted to mention Erika Alexander also guest appeared on Black Lightning, which reunited her with Cress Williams aka Scooter. As a fan of Living Single, I was excited to see that connection. Oh, and I was excited to see her and T.C. Carson reprise their Max & Kyle characters on Half&Half tv show.
I was just gonna mention Half and Half. They were always making Living Single references on that show as well, I think because it was the same production company or something. You know, the one with the lady on the windmill?🙂

I watched Living Single all the time. Even as a white woman the stories and characters were iconic and relatable to me. I loved Kim Cole’s airhead with a big heart.

Queen latifah literally said the producer of Friends spoke to her about how envious he was of living single and would make a copy of it when he had the opportunity to do so.
The Fresh Prince wasn't inspired by Living Single. It was out 3 years prior, and two of the man characters played Wills girlfriend on the show.
Thought so as well. All in all, it was a great time for sitcoms black characters.

In my personal opinion, I feel they were robbed. They stole their show and gave it to the show FRIENDS. This was a great show and it was not recognized. They stole their storyline and this is a shame.
And character development. They stole all these details
I never seen friends have a blk person as a friend. But living single had every races in the show.
They had that one black lady play Ross' girlfriend, Aisha Tyler, I think.

And even then the main role she played was getting passed around by Ross, Joey and a one-off ex-boyfriend who of course, was also white.

Living Single was one of my favorite shows. I have the full series on dvd and I watch it all the time. The chemistry between all of the cast was so nice. Plus, it reminds me of a period in time when the Sunday lineup included Martin and Living Single.
Damn i gotta get a dvd player. I got a playstation but ive had bad experiences using those for playing dvds. You just made me realize i gotta get one. I got all these great dvds and no player. Tv sucks its time to take a time travel.

Who wrote this thing? Living Single didn't open the door for Fresh Prince. That show was on air 3 years BEFORE Living Single aired in 1993!

Living Single was never as popular as Friends. In fact, Living Single was competing with other black sitcoms that had far better promotion. Considering that Friends and Living Single were on competing networks, it makes no sense that Fox would kill the series to make a competing series do better. Friends just had much better promotion, and Living Single didn’t have the juice that other black sitcoms like Fresh Prince or Family Matters 🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️

It's also almost like she focused on the negative things of T.C. Carson. Don't get me wrong, I'm trying to ride the man lol, but him voicing kratos made him a legend when it came to voice acting.

This was out when I was a kid. I watched the pilot on Max and now I fully understand what they're talking about. Amazing show!! Love that I can watch it now as I'm approaching 40 and gone through some life experiences.

It was an excellent show. I lived not far from that age group at the time of its airing.
I related to the show because it closely resembled my life and friends.
3 girls and 3 guys all moved from TX to NY upon graduating from college.
1 girl was my cousin. She was doing fairly well in auditions and landed several roles. I aspired to Act but never quite made it through, or even sometimes “to” auditions.
We all “Temped” until we gained permanent positions or landed a gig that sustained us.
We were close and still have contact with each other to this day.
Ironically, some of our personalities resembled those of Kyle and Sinclair.
One had the drive of Kadisha (not sure of the spelling), while another was a little like Regine. We had our own version of Maxine however. She would be the “Christian” version.
We didn’t have an Overton but we all had to be “handy” to survive the seasons in New York City.
The world was cheated when the show ended so abruptly. It was just getting good ( as the saying goes).
Living Single started in 1992-93; 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' had been on since 1990.... 'Living Single' was a classic show because it was normal people who had their own lives dealing with reality and enjoying one another, no foolishness...the men were serious-minded with their occupations: a handy-man and a stock broker, so you have the money and the housing taken care of while the women embraced business as their neighbor, 'Maxine Shaw' was a lawyer and politician....The reality of the show was about feminism and economics for women but all those women needed men, that's the bottom line.
They didn't need men. They WANTED the companionship and live of genuine men. Don't retell this story with today's nonsensical narratives.

And Sinclair and Overton ALWAYS HAD EACH OTHER! You frame shit in your current intellectual dysfunction to make yourself right but that isn't what happened. Cut the shit and get some therapy because something is clearly wrong with your mental evaluation.

Racism is always at the root cause for any black shows being cancelled.
As a 63 year old white woman in 2024, I loved this show when it aired and I certainly did see it and watch it well before I ever saw "Friends". I don't recall paying much attention to 'Friends' until years later when I caught re-runs of it on a cable channel. 'Living Single'? I watch it in re-runs every chance I get. Love the cast and the chemistry. The strength of friendship. And the characters come across as real. Not like the old "black" sitcoms (no knocks to 'Sanford & Son,' or 'Good Times' or the actors but really, those show's characters were portrayed very stereotypical as uneducated poor black folks.) 'Living Single' always seemed more realistic to me. I think I already mentioned, I still watch this show. :)

I was 20 when this show first aired, and then had the experience of watching it all over again with my then teenage daughter a few years back, because she absolutely loved it and wanted me to watch it with her.
Tc was done wrong but found his place in santa monica studios. He voiced one of the greatest characters for Playstation Kratos from god of war and voices many characters from many animation and cartoons movies and tv. And Maxine from the show makes black comic books.

If Friends can be dusted off and brought back then Living Single can. Question is….what exactly would it take for this to happen? If we had all the Black shows come back that made an impact that would be awesome. Living Single, Martin, A Different World, The Cosby Show (in whatever way possible due to the whole Bill Cosby scandal), Moesha, Family Matters, Good Times and The Jefferson’s. All these shows were not just for entertainment but encouraged positively. It’s some trash shows out here that been out for too long that are negative and teach nothing. The Black community needs more positive influences that look like us on tv. Representation is important.

This show was the 1st & last of the decent contracts in the industry for us IN the industry. I've been independent every since. I don't feel bad for anyone that claims to be overworked. I agree that the industry is greedy. However, overworked, nah, you can always quit, walk away. Which is more important your career or your health 🤔?
