    Honestly, they've always appeared very friendly for guard dogs. They do look awesome and very intimidating/capable. The breed seems like great dogs to have as buddies/deterrents.

      90% of those with bad intentions will definitely think twice before entering the property when they have seen these dogs. Criminals will have done some research prior to the actual day of the break in. However the bark that these dogs produce is of a complete different level. Both of our girls have a very deep and very intimidating bark that will happen straight away when a non member of our family is at our front door. Which is again a massive deterrent!
      Yes, they are very loving towards the people they know and trust. I have heard some worrying stories of Boerboels that will display an extraordinary amount of aggression towards anyone apart from the owners. You really don't want to have that!

      @Pawfextion the best thing to do is early socialization daily. The boerboel can look slow and ponderus but when they see something they want, that's when you see how fast and agile they are. There's no need to train these monsters to protect, when it's already part of their DNA.

      @elenadejesus7489 You are completely right! It is part of their make up. They are just natural protectors but so loving at the same time. You're dead on the money. Early socialisation is key! To me, Boerboels are the perfect dog. I love mine deeply, and how they love back is not like any other dog I have experienced. Side note.. The physique on your Black one is next level. *That* is what a Boerboel should be shaped like... broad shoulders and a waistline. Great video..

    I love boerboel but I ended up with Alabai as property guardian because we have so many predators in my area I felt Alabai was better suited to handle that. Maybe one day I will have a boerboel. For now I’m very happy with my Alabai he’s very independent and not clingy at all which I like

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @heydiahrea I think you made the right choice. You need to know what you want it to do, to make a proper choice between these to breeds. If you want a dog to be independent and not clingy then you are better off not buying a Boerboel. Boerboels need their family, they will guard their families but they rather be with you than outside on their own. Boerboels are independent thinkers but operate differently than an Alabai.

  • @MrTimbeatty
    @MrTimbeatty 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    My boerboel is great. But she barks very infrequently. Basically only if she sees the threat. Doesn't bark at the doorbell. Doesn't bark just to come in/out. If she sees a stranger (person or dog) she'll bark. But that's about it. Never barks in her crate at all unless it's an extreme potty situation. Extremely good with any children and puppies. Okay with adults after intro. Adult dogs are the only concern I have and it's just her body language, not any incidents.

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @MrTimbeatty It looks like you have such a nice representative of the breed! My suggestion is to not avoid these situations of seeing other dogs. I hear a lot of people talking about meeting other dogs etc. They think that they know what they are talking about. However, your dog does not have to like every dog and doesn't need to meet every single one. She just needs to be calm and unfazed when she sees other dogs. Dogs in general should be trained to understand that the owner is in charge of the situation and all the dog has to do is just follow the owners lead.

      Hi, @nicolemarie3660, Thank you so much for your kind message! Those dogs are beautiful dogs to own and if you want to eventually own a Boerboel, then these dogs will be a great foundation in terms of dog ownership knowledge. Boerboels are generally also very much food motivated. They are stubborn and will push the boundaries sometimes. Especially the first 24 months. During those months you just make sure that they understand where their position is within the pack. I am sure that you will absolutely fall head over heels in love with this breed once the time comes to own one yourself.

      @Pawfextion  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @davidnightingale3901 Thank you for your compliment! On this channel you can ask as many questions as you would like and you will always receive an answer! ☺️
      Okay so there are some health issues within the breed some, if not, most can actually be avoid or at least decrease the possibility of happening. It is extremely important that you will get your pup from a good breeder who truly cares for the breed. Make sure that both parents are health tested and ask for the results. The breed standard is tough and does not allow entropion or ectropion on the eyes. All breeding dogs from reputable breeders should be hip and elbow health tested. My advice to you is to truly invest a large amount of time in finding the right breeder. We also have a video on this particular subject. Observe and ask questions and try to poke through the superficial stuff. Any breeder can pretend to be nice and reliable for a certain amount of time because they want your money.
      So once you have your pup it is extremely important how you raise the pup. The first 18 months are extremely important and are the building blocks for the future of your dog. By feeding it correctly, weight management, exercise management and the right type of socialisation you will set your dog up for a beautiful future. If you put too much weight on too early it will just put strain on the bones and joints. This will definitely cause long term damage. We also have a video called "How to Raise the Perfect Boerboel"
      Hope this answer helped but please don't hesitate to ask any other questions if you have them.

    Growing up in rural Australia, I was always surrounded by working dogs. When I was 14 years old, a girlfriend asked if I could mind her pet, whilst she holidayed on the coast with her family. Her pet was a dachshund- a sausage dog, a pampered, silly, friendly, highly strung, indoors-warrior type pf mut, which could not cut the mustard with the (real) dogs we had on the farm. Hoping to increase my credibility with the sweet-young-thing, I agreed to mind her dog for 2 weeks. It didn't go as well as any of us might have preferred. By the time my girl came to collect her pedigreed, pampered pup, he was a scarred and beaten shadow of his former cocky self. I lost a girlfriend over the incident but I was compensated by a thoroughly convincing argument against small dogs. By the time I finished school and left home for the coastal city, I thought I was ready to acquire the individual accompaniment of a devoted partner. I chose a Doberman. At least, I assume it was a Doberman. It certainly looked like a Doberman. It behaved like a Doberman. It was smart as fuck and stuck by my side, like a Doberman...BUT...I never got to see the sire, which the breeder's assurances convinced me was also a Doberman. No papers, no guarantees other than a wink and a nod. But, By Crickey, that dog grew into what can only be described as "the best a Doberman can be." From my first acquisition of a larger dog, there was never a second thought about what sort of dog I would have in the future. It didn't necessarily need to be a Doberman. It just needed to be: 'of that size.' I've had Great Danes, Doberman/Bullmastiff crosses and Woolfhound/Doberman crosses over the past 50 years. (The woolfie was a bit scary- being bred to bring down wild pigs.) My last dog- the one I bought for my daughter- was a harlequin Dane, female. She was a great teacher for my 10-year-old girl. My next dog could be any of the above, any mix of the above, any other short-haired large breed that need not chase after everything it sees. I'm reluctant to go for hunters like Weimaraners, Short-haired pointers, and Labradors shed too much. Ilike what you have shown of the Boerboel. I'll acquire my next family member in Philippines. Are there reliable breeders of your Boerboels in those islands?

      @patricktyr-egge5001 Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. It was great reading about your journey in the large breed dogs world. Before our first Boerboel we had a Viszla and he was great and loving aswell, an absolute softy and perfect family dog. I just missed the solid substance, size. I'm just obsessed with natural body mass and muscle mass. The other option was the Rhodesian Ridgeback, however the Boerboel has always my obsession and I did not want to invest money on a dog breed that I wasn't completely passionate/obsessed about.
      You can do some research into NBO Boerboels and ZBD Kennels. I know they both breed Boerboels, however I don't know much about the lineage of their breeding dogs and how they operate their businesses. We have a video on how to find your perfect breeder, which is full information on how to find the right breeder for you. It might be of use to you and the journey that you are on to finding your next dog. Good luck and stay in touch! Would love to stay updated on your journey... 😊

      @ChadPayne1 Thank you so much for your question and it is great to interact with you in regards to this fantastic dog breed. The Boerboel does well in the heat, however like any dog they need shaded areas and plenty of cooling water. Our dogs are outside during the day time, but will have plenty of areas where they can hide away from the heat. However that doesn't mean they are sun worshipers. They love laying in the sun and snoozing the day away when it is hot. They will obviously slow down a bit and are not as energetic as when the temperature levels are more pleasing. However this breed is all round a great dog for most various climates. Always with any dog breed you need to be cautious of your dog getting overheated. So if you live in a climate where the summers get extremely hot, then please gain the extra knowledge of how to deal with a dog that has overheated. This can be the difference between life and death. What has sparked your interest in the Boerboel?

    • @guyhmajor
      @guyhmajor 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have two in Spain and in July and August long walks and hiking is strictly dawn and dusk. They are very heavy muscular dogs and will overheat if required to do cart pulling in hot weather. Regardless of the temperature they are hyper vigilant and during the day will sleep with one eye open and set off on a boundary patrol every so often. They are smart and stubborn and require fair and firm leadership. Like most mastiff breeds they are sensitive and physical punishment is not a good idea as it will break the bond between owner and dog. They thrive on human companionship and want to be around their pack all the time. They do need a lot of work with training and socialisation to make them good canine citizens. In terms of guarding you and your property there is no training required as it is hard wired in to them and it will be the obedience training that saves the life of an unwelcome intruder when you call the dog off. Most importantly they are not reactive(fearful), they know their power and they know what they can do to anything on four legs or two. Worth noting the males are slow to mature and don't become the full package until about 2-5 to 3 years old.

    Hey there! I'm really interested in the Boer Boel breed and would love to hear your advice. Could you share more, or even make a video about the crucial point you mentioned: "They are stubborn and will push the boundaries sometimes, especially during the first 24 months. During those months, you just need to make sure they understand their position within the pack"?
    I'm in the process of contacting several breeders to find the healthiest dogs and the best fit for me. However, I want to learn as much as I can about how Boer Boels push boundaries and how to recognize these behaviors before things escalate. What are the best methods for managing this breed specifically?
    Some dogs respond well to a firm "No," while others might become even more dominant. How do you handle these situations with Boer Boels, and what signs should I look for to address issues early on?
    I'd really appreciate any advice or resources you can share, and a video on this topic would be fantastic. Thanks a lot!

      Thank you so much for your message! We are so happy that people are finding our videos more and more and that they are truly seeing the value of them. Boerboels will push boundaries. I teach my dogs to look at me for guidance first. For example, when we call the dogs into the house and open the back door, they can't just barge through the door. They first look up and wait till they hear "come in" and thats one by one. So I expect the next one to also look, make I contact and patiently wait. They will push boundaries by not listening at the first command or when they don't want to move from one area to a different area and just flat out refuse to go. These are just some examples. Obviously every Boerboel has its own character so you would need to game if your dog needs a firmer approach or a softer approach. In general they do learn better from praising the positive behaviours rather than the hard "NO's" but they do need them as well.
      We will definitely create a video answering your question, because it is a great question and we love helping others! 😊

I love the black coat of the other one, I normally lean towards Rottweiler dogs but the Boerboel is fantastic choice as well, big musculature dogs that aren't too mastiff like with extra wrinkles and fat and better looking then a Cane Corso and Bullmastiff's. The Tosa and Boerboel are my picks for large dog breeds.

They are an absolute amazing breed and for me the best of both worlds. They are big dogs but their heart is even bigger. Their love for their family members is absolutely unbelievable. I personally love the Tosa as well. The Boerboel and the Tosa look very similar, however the Tosa is on the banned dog list here in the U.K. so it was not an option for us. But I think from what I read, the Boerboel is more a family dog than the Tosa.

    I like how much you care for your animals as loved pets! You seem to have a lot of deep consideration and pride in your breeding program. Why did you decide to breed black coat boerboels?
    I heard of a Dogue de Bordeaux that recently got disqualified 1 full year for having a white tuft of hair on its chest. I have also heard of a black boerboel being disqualified from an AKC event, which is surprising considering how rarely Boerboels participate in the AKC events.
    Below is the extent of the information I could find on SABBS and the AKC on the matter.
    "The American Kennel Club (AKC) disqualifies black Boerboels from its shows because the color is not described in the breed standard. The only color specifically mentioned as disqualifying is "blue colored (powder coat)," which refers to dilution. Other disqualifications include: black with white markings, long coat, and nose leather in any color other than black.
    However, the South African Boerboel Breeders Society (SABBS) now accepts black as a color"

      @seanthomas5182 Thank you so much for your kind words! They are so much appreciated and I am so pleased that you can see the passion, enthusiasm and adoration we have for this fantastic dog breed.
      So as you have noticed yourself there are several organisations that have different breed standards. The largest two organisations are NABBR (previously called NABBA) and SABBS and they both accept the black Boerboel. We have not bred Zuri ourself but we bought her because of her lineage. One of my absolute favourite Boerboels is Spitsvuur Ramkat. Until today still the highest appraised black Boerboel in history on the SABT/SABBA register. This dog is legendary and we managed to get a direct daughter of the him. It was an opportunity that I could not let go past. The downside to the dog breed, (which is not enough to stop anyone from buying a Boerboel) is that there is a lot of politics in it. Politics to be the best and most recognised breeder, as well as to have the most influence within the breed. However this comes also with a lot of bad mouthing of others.
      We just want to breed the best Boerboels for the qualities that we want to see, which are great temperament, family orientated and natural guardian dogs. We sourced females with proven lineage and dogs that tick the right boxes for our program. 😊

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @viccundiff20 Thank you so much for your compliment! Kiara is from a very small family breeder in Cambridge (England) which we had first pick off and Zuri is from Noxterra Boerboels as I was desperate to have a daughter of the legend Spitsvuur Ramkat and not be imported from a breeder abroad.
      We picked both of them because of their blood lines:
      Kiara has Bodington, CDH and Groenberg Rambo bloodlines.
      Zuri has Spitsvuur, Cabaret, Klein Sandfontein and Artifacts Yster.
      They are our foundation females as we want to provide a great "product" to all of our future clients/family members! ☺️

      @viccundiff20 It's our pleasure! We love reading the comments and will always make time to reply/write back. We appreciate you for watching our content and that you even take time to write messages. Our hope is that the channel helps and entertains our audience. Those that have a Boerboel, those preparing to own a Boerboel or those that just appreciate the Boerboel from afar. Lineage is extremely important, however it is also about how you look after them and raise them. Which of the above category mentioned do you fall in?

    How do they deal with wildlife

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Youngowl2016 Thank you for your great question! When it comes to Boerboels and wildlife it isn't as straight forward as "they are hunters or they leave them alone". Boerboels will notice wildlife from far away but won't react until it is necessary. We often encounter deer in close proximity, but we also train our girls to let them be. If they get startled by sounds they can sometimes go into a chase, however our girls have a good recall and therefore stop when get told. When the girls are on our property they often hear or smell wildlife, but every now and then they "warn" bark and thats it. Hope this answered your question. @RaulGarcia-cg3vn we breed them ourselves, however no litters at the moment. Where are you based? It is extremely important to do a lot of research into your potential breeder. It is also very important to make a list of things what you look for in a Boerboel and what you would want from your breeder, (being able to reach out for help etc.) Over the years we have build good relationships with some breeders in different parts of the world. So do let me know where you are based. 😊

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @RaulGarcia-cg3vn Firstly there is no limit to the amount of questions you can ask. We are more than happy to answer your questions. It's better that you ask us, this way you will at least get trust worthy information. Secondly I would personally 100% choose the Boerboel over the Bullmastiff. They both have very similar characteristics, however the Boerboel wins it for me when it comes to family friendliness. I also prefer the head shape and overall look of the Boerboel in comparison with the Bull mastiff, but this is of course a personal preference. Boerboels require leadership and if you make sure your Boerboel knows the boundaries then he/she will be a great family dog and accepting to those that you allow to come over. Socialisation is essential when it comes to your extended family and friends. Regular meetings will make things a lot easier. The Boerboel is a "Natural" when it comes to guarding. You don't need to teach it anything. Because it wants to make sure that you and your family are safe.

    • @Pawfextion
      @Pawfextion  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hahaha, there was a slight exaggeration. However we live on the edge of a nature reserve and when the dogs are outside they do react to larger animals (like various deer, foxes etc) moving around. To walk from our property to the woods takes roughly 2 - 3 minutes. So it is a fair distance. I also have several cameras around the property and sometimes on my way home in my car, I will log on to one of my cameras when I am about a minute away and I see them jumping up as they can hear the sound of our car. I would say that is a pretty good hearing system hahaha. 😉 Have you got a Boerboel yourself or another dog breed?

      @seanmoore9878 What a nice athletic corso you have! Yes they share some similarities. However in terms of physical needs and training they are completely the same. You would raise a Corso exactly in the same way you raise a Boerboel. They have the same nutritional needs. The same exercise needs etc. How did you find it going through puppy stage? He should be entering his teenage phase now. We have a video where I explain this stage, so that you are a bit more prepared. Obviously it will be different per dog.

      @Pawfextion  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @williammashapu3739 thank you so much for your kind comment! This is what we are hoping to achieve through our channel. Firstly, it will be hard to find another guarding breed type dog, as family focused as the Boerboel. Our girls are gentle and very much integrated and part of our immediate family as well as extended family and friends. It's all about interactions from an early age. My number 1 rule though is that young children should not be left unsupervised with big dogs for a long period of time. This is because Boerboels don't fully understand their own size and sometimes act a bit clumsy.
      In which part of SA are you based?
