  • Here is a shorter versions of cleaning and re-greasing a vintage Takumar lens. This lens is the 50mm F/1.4 seven-element version.
    At 20:54 - I put that particular lens element in backwards. I didn’t noticed this until I tried to use the lens. It gave the photos a very nice dreamy look but that isn’t the kind of affect I am looking for. So if you do happen to follow this video for cleaning your own lens, make note of the correct orientation.
    If you want a more in-depth explanation on how to put this lens together, check out the previous video here: • Refurbishing a Vintage...

    Thanks for making this! you helped me finally fix a lens I accidentally broke (2 years ago 💀) by somehow pulling the lenses and its helical gear straight out of the housing.

    Great video. Perfect music. I dig these because i'm trying to learn exactly this. Take my Takumar lenses apart and clean them. Please keep them coming!

    Quick run through an ultrasonic cleaner does wonders on the old grease

    Hi, thanks for nice and detailed video! Got me thinking, how is the infinity focus adjusted, is there a possibility to screw that up when dismantling the foucus system?

    A legitimate question.. when you clean it with cotton, aren't you unintentionally leaving cotton residue in the elements? Because cotton sheds micro fibers, which can build up with the grease and between the gears, and cause it to lock up again.
    No? 👀
    Please forgive me if I'm wrong

      It’s quite possible. Is it enough to make a difference? Maybe? I will let you decide.

    I can't get the very front glass element out, cannot unscrew the holding ring. Update: WD-40 is the answer.

      Same here. Need to get this sticky rub tool ("tension keys" as I remember).

    • @nandakoryaaa
      @nandakoryaaa ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andreisirant8792 in my case, rub tool wouldn't help, the ring was too tight and also fixed with some glue. I tried to dissolve it with isopropyl alcohol and lighter fluid but ultimately it was WD-40 that helped.

      @@nandakoryaaa Thanks, looks like I need WD-40 instead of isopropyl alcohol too.

    good video, just what i need.
    I recently made a big leap into the unknown trying to find one of those hot lenses, luck was on my side as the first one i ordered actually was one of them but sadly it has a few dust particles in it, i'd want to give it to someone who would clean it for me, but 1. i don't have such a professional yet and 2. im a bit affraid that he might be overanxious about the radiation and not be whilling to take it... so there is the only option i can see working and it is one I am affraid off, cleaning it on my own

      If you have good mechanic experienced it isn’t too difficult. If you don’t, it is maybe not recommended. But there’s only one way to learn.

    Isnt it dangerous to open up and clean radioactive lenses?

    • @Casey_Schmidt
      @Casey_Schmidt  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you chip the glass into powder/dust, absolutely. If you’re careful with the lens elements as you should be, there is no added risk. They used to make dinner plates and bowls with uranium in them. That’s more concerning to me!

      @@Casey_Schmidt okey thank you for reply. Ive done a clean to it and it was a great sucess. I have a super takumar 55mm f2 serial nr 714xxx. Been laying in a dark closet for 20/30 years. It has this small golden Brown ish front vs my newer lenses but with the white paper test, the lens is as Bright as the white paper and could not see any yellow. What does that say you? Is it not radioactive?
      Best regards from Ollie.

      @@-OEG likely it isn’t but you will never know unless you measure it with a geiger counter.
