This movie is the first Western to be made by ITP on the subject of cavary wars with the native Indians with the role of the natives being kept to the barest minimum. The famous paintings of Frederic Remington on the same subject shown with the initial credits are indeed topical recalling the artist's first person account of his travels with the cavalry patrols under General Nelson Miles in Apache country. While the Apaches like the Sioux were fighting their last ditch battles for their freedom and for the land of their birth, the cavalry were discharging their duties boldly and with spirited camaraderie against equally harsh and determined enemies. The fate of the natives was however sealed right from the start with the endless inroads of mountainmen for fur, cattlemen for prairie grass, hunters for clearing buffaloes for railroads, sod busters for growing corn and wheat and miners for gold and silver into the land pushing the natives to their sad and inescapable doom. The movie tries well to capture the above details, spirit and ambience of the times from the whiteman's perspective as have the preponderant majority of Westerns have done in the past.
Quite a good modern movie and reasonably tense in places. Passed an hour or so quite well.
