The design started off in Fusion 360 with the intent to hold both tealight candles and tapered candles. We used a stereolithography (SLA) 3d printer (the Peopoly Moai) to make a master model. SLA has the advantage over fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) because it has a smoother and more accurate surface finish.
We sealed the SLA print because it can interfere with the silicone curing process by spraying some clear acrylic spray paint. We then applied mold release to prep for the silicone pour! We first tried platinum cure silicone but it was too finicky so we switched to tin cure silicone. We talked with Quikrete about what concrete mix to use and they recommended we use non-shrink precision grout. The main things we liked about this mix is that it was really fine (so it could capture tiny details), it hardened pretty fast, and its final strength is really impressive. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

You guys should make a vacuum chamber to get the bubbles out of the silicone for better pours. The King Of Random has a good one, it would make a pretty cool video too!
A vacuum chamber is DEFINITELY on the list. We want to design a transparent one though, and have some ideas on how to do it :D

@@EvanAndKatelyn For something small like this you don't need a vacuum pump and vacuum chamber. You can use a paint pressure pot to compress the bubbles to get a perfectly bubble free mold. The draw back is that the size of the mold has to fit into the pressure pot. Also hot glue and foam core can get you a mold like this in less time. Brick in the yard is actually a great youtube resource. I've made a few molds in my pressure pot, and it's good enough to cast resin in without any bubbles or jagged bumps.

amazing as always! If you don't plan to keep using the molds, it would be an interesting experiment to see if you could cast other materials like resin/etc, and how they handle the geometry of that mold.
Ooooh yeah that would be fun!! We'll definitely keep the molds around and maybe one day if we have some extra material from another project we can toss it in :D
They turned out great. I love the video and the fact you show that everything doesn't go smoothly all the time and even mention its sometimes good to step away from a project to give your time to solve any issues. I find, as I am just starting out, that it helps a lot. I sometimes feel like I am procrastinating until later on when I have a lightbulb moment. Better than getting frustrated and throwing a project across the workshop. Anyway great video!
Happy to share the mistakes and setbacks! We have to remind ourselves too to step away sometimes - it's hard! - but it definitely helps to come up with a game plan
I love the solution to your problem and the fact that you should your initial failure. It's not always easy to show the things that went wrong, but not only did you learn from the problem, you kicked that problem in the butt!
Woooo and next time hopefully we can avoid all the problems we ran into in the past :D We've also brainstormed that one day we can do a how to series on things we've done again and again with all the lessons learned. Like maybe after our 10th mold we could do a how to on mold making!

I love how you guys show when stuff doesn't go as planned. It makes us amateurs feel better about our own mistakes.
I ran out of recent episodes so I'm now watching old ones. I'm amazed at how much their workshop has improved. I also noticed that the old videos are more TH-cam-y, with lots of background music and stylized shots, like a Tasty video except for crafts. For some reason the newer videos that have less music and simpler shots feel more organic and thus more enjoyable to watch.

Awesome job guys!! We do urethane molds with our SLA printer .. put your mixed urethane/silicone into a vacuum chamber to remove all of the air bubbles prior to pouring, it helps with the end result.

Quick tip from an engineering student who has worked with sla printers:
While curing your parts in uv does make them more rigid, it also makes them more brittle. Meaning that for uses like this, it might be worth it to leave the material uncured because it will be more malleable (spelled that wrong probably, engineering, not English) and won't break as easy.

This is great! It's so cool watching you too work, especially when something you're nervous about works out right, you get adorably excited. On that note, you should look into setting up a vacuum chamber for your silicon molds. They're relatively simple, and they virtually eliminate bubbles from your molds.

Super nice result. You can try a vacuum chamber to degas the silicone as well as the concrete. You could also use the vacuum chamber after pouring the concrete to catch all the details like the tips.

What might help in the future with the bubbles in the silicone is to get a degasser. A degasser is essentially a vacuum chamber to get and trapped air bubbles out.

Glad to see it all worked out in the end. Half way through I was thinking they should reorient the mold and use tin cure, then you did! If you do any more molds I highly recommend Smoothon NV silicones I prefer it over Oomoo for quick molds and is specifically formulated for not needed to be degassed. The final holder looked great. now I have SLA printer envy!!😉

For the center part, leaving a little hole for air to escape and "squish" it into the latex would have worked too. As for the outer part, maybe make it into 2 parts taped together to make it easier to unmold ? The outer part doesn't need to be perfect as it won't be used to shape the final product anyway.

Just in future so you can use the rest of your silicone, when mixing platinum silicone, don't pour into 2 separate containers, just pour it straight into one container and using a scale is far more accurate! I worked in a prosthetic workshop and we never had issues with the stuff when working that way. Love the outcome though!!!

The outer walls serve a specific purpose, to hold the negative mold above ground. It would save you material to just have smaller contact points

You should look into concrete dyes and make different colors. It's a powder you mix in. I've seen driveways and it looks pretty cool.

Good question! We thought it would release better and we didn't want to go through the printing and sanding needed to get the PLA print as smooth as the SLA one
