    FYI - he’s promoting a retrospective album of his solo material called BeforeAfter. Hence the focus on solo material.

    Todd’s from Philly so he probably had no idea about Bang on the Drum being a Packers theme. Although the Packers SHOULD be paying him royalties. ❤

    Love hearing others' perspectives on his tour. Bit of a different perspective for this girl in that I was actually surprised at the volume of Hall & Oates songs (hits and not-so-popular) on the set list - roughly half - expecting instead that the majority would be focused on his five solo albums. The concern he and John Oates have often flagged is how they have to limit their set lists to those hits so fans don't complain - fair enough. But for this tour that was decidedly not an H&O one and was not advertised as such, I had hoped he'd finally feel free to skip that restriction and roll out so much more of his solo work. If audiences don't hear those tunes from his anthology live, convincing them to buy BeforeAfter is a tougher sell to those unfamiliar with that music. In any event, glad to hear you enjoyed the show! The gents do a banging job even after all these years.

      I must say I share much of your perspective! I don't think Daryl should have cut any of the songs from his current setlist. My only suggestion would be to have him play 10-15 min longer (two H&O radio hits). I know the show was designed for his solo work, but H&O fans are going to make up a large part of the crowd regardless. But its ultimately a nitpick on my end. I had a great time! Anyway, thanks for watching (and commenting)!

    As much as I do understand the sentiment re: 'Bang the Drum', as a huge Todd Rundgren fan, I despair that the song so often seems to overshadow his much better songs with the general public. He has a deep, diverse, and musically challenging catalog that deserves wider recognition. As a fan, I don't want a novelty song to obscure that. If fans only know 'Bang the Drum', they would be less likely to take him seriously as a musician.

    This was Daryl's solo tour; not a retrospective of Hall and Oates music; that would be a Hall and Oates concert. It's not a "good" band; it's a GREAT band!

  • @c.a.carlln0287
    @c.a.carlln0287 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    OR……. Maybe a better reason for not playing the song is that since he’s from Philly he’s most likely an EAGLES fan and HATES the Packers. Why would he pander to cheers for a team he can’t stand???😂

    Your in depth commentary is massively appreciated.
    Thanks for touching on your perceptions of both artists. Like you, I am not widely familiar with Todd Rundgren. While I was not too glued in for the first songs he played..I became attached by his 4th, 5th songs and beyond. He has a wonderful voice and I’m glad I got to see both acts for the price of one (inflation, right?)
    Darryl is stunning, both in his performances and his demeanor. I am sad that many fans view his requesting exclusive attention for Hall & Oates is haughty. It is a partnership ultimately. The contract had been written up. You may wonder why he didn’t break off his Oates way early on his career. Fascinating to think that his contract may have had an element where he could not exclude John. Either way if you listen to songs like Possession Obsession, sung by John you wonder why John Oates did not do solo work himself. They are both phenomenal artists. Seriously stem from different directions. But the two together are a masterpiece !

    When I went to the opening show of this tour in Chicago a guy I was talking to told me that he was super disappointed Todd didn't play Bang the drum all day. I dont care about the song much but I understand it has a lot of sentimental value especially in Wisconsin, but even in chicago

    An observation: By fixating on the absence of a Todd song you ignored your audience. All you had to say was that you were disappointed he didn't play the tune, then move on from there. You got off to such a bad start that I stopped the video to write this note...and won't be going back to watch the rest. If you are going to give a review, tell the audience what you saw and do what you can to comment objectively, not dive into a subjective rabbit hole. 🙂
    Also, Todd's career started prior to the early 70s. He had released two albums in the late 60s with his band Nazz (Yardbirds/Who British rock influenced). First album, 'Nazz', had the classic 'Open My Eyes' and original version of 'Hello It's Me'. That band had a singer, though Todd wrote, arranged, handled guitar etc. Second album, Nazz Nazz', was much better, with a lot of Todd ripping on guitar, most notably on 'A Beautiful Song', on which he rips throughout. 'Kiddie Boy' also has a fine solo. Both are on TH-cam. 'Nazz III' was released posthumously and is merely outtakes etc.
    As for Todd, he is rock's great genius. But even a longtime fans admit that not everything is of interest. That's good - Todd is pursuing his muse and not chasing gold records. You might want to read the Wikipedia on him.
    As for him and Hall. They grew up in Philadelphia, their bands playing the same venues and the two of them drawing from similar interests, most notably Philly soul. Todd produced Hall & Oates 'War Babies' album in the early 70s. And he has appeared numerous times on 'Daryl's House.
    Here he is getting heavier than usual Letterman Show, where he often sat in with the house band, on one occasion also serving as musical director when Paul Schafer was absent.
    Now I am being over indulgent...but do go and check into Todd - there is SO much to be discovered.

      @@PlayThatPodcast Yes, I know, which is why I acknowledged that I was being overindulgent. You sounded like you could use some insight. I mistakenly thought you might welcome it.
      My message was not intended to be rude - it was an observation.
      One of the challenges with watching TH-cam clips like yours is that there is no quality filter - you get to use the name of people like Todd Rundgren to attract viewers, and then you waste our time. Goodbye.

      @@MrCherryJuice You thought someone would "welcome" a comment that includes ""You got off to such a bad start that I stopped the video to write this note...and won't be going back to watch the rest". Yeah real constructive criticism right there. No quality filter on the comment section either, I guess lol.

    Dude, Todd Rundgren may have been technically the act that "opened," but he wasn't the "opening act." It was basically a double bill.

    • @PlayThatPodcast
      @PlayThatPodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may be a matter of perspective, but I don't think this is right. At least not based on how the tour was advertised in posters or reported about in articles. I don't think this was meant to be a double bill. I think Daryl gave Todd more time than typical opening acts out of respect for his career and friendship. And by the way -- "opening act" is not an insult! There's nothing wrong with being one!

    • @timharris8109
      @timharris8109 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PlayThatPodcast You're completely missing my point - not saying that "opening act" is an insult in any way at all. I'm addressing that you said that since Todd was the "opening act" that his set should have been shorter, etc. That would have been just weird.

    I prefer Hall and his band to H&O shows. For my ears, he could have added another 6 of his own (from solo cd’s). I read liner notes. I already know how much Hall has written, so I was unsurprised by those podcast comments.
    That band is great, rich & their vocals superb.
    Unlike you, I never heard of Bang the Drum until LFDH. I heard the Nashville show, loved it. I think of the pair as “Philly guys”, Oates being a native New Yorker.
    Something About You, Wildfire, Fools Rush In, Want To, Send Me, Holding Out For Love.
    Hall justified what he said by later saying “I wrote more songs with Sara Allen than I did with John”…if you paid attention. I did. Btw, H&O’s last album together was 16 years ago & Daryl has co-written with approx 30 other people.

    We all have our own opinions & we all have a right to them. Personally I prefere H&O 's concerts to Daryl & Todd. I wont go to another Daryl & Todd concert but will H &O's. I also do not like Daryl's interviews & trash talk about John, it annoys the hell out of me...but thats me. I love the music but not the man so much. We all don't have to enjoy the same things.

    Todd Rundgren. Saw him last night in Madison. He did not do the bang the drum song there either, but I'm not a fan of that anyway, so all good for me. He opened terribly imo..out of tune bad, and it stayed that way for the 1st 3 songs for sure, some others later..mainly the slower ballad style. When he picked up the guitar and got rockin, whole different store. I gave him a 5 out of 10,
    I was never a fan of his older music, listening to much harder rock when I was younger.
