Sam, you are as great a host as any who have held this position. You are one of the very few who gets out of the way of your interviewee, and just listens. Perfect!

"Why can't we see real life as it happens?" Holy crap, soooo true. I wonder if we are just too wrapped up in ourselves to see these moments. But with later reflection and in hindsight - we see, as the saying goes, "20/20."

We can't see life as it happens because we need perspective. Sometimes two people can share their immediate perceptions and get a kind of parallax effect, where the gestalt perception is better than either individual's. Being able to see to the heart of the matter in the moment is one of the characteristics we call "being wise".

wow.... that hit me like a ton of bricks.. I understand so well.. In my band, I write songs alone and with others and others also write songs. When we record.. I am the 'engineer/producer' and after, I am the mixer/editor/producer... and I will ask the guitarist for another take and another... and you get to the point where you wonder if the next take that you didnt get... didnt ask for.. would be THE take.. and wonder why you didnt see it/hear it from the start... I look back at movies taken when I was a kid,. and see things that I didnt see as they were happening. Is it because we only have so much brain power to take in whats happening and we are bound to miss something?

Now that I am older, I really can see more of life as it happens. For example, in 2020 I started seeing people on TV usually talking about Covid, and realize that a particular actor would be great to play that person in the movie. You can't tell me that the last 5 years is not going to get a shite-ton of movie scripts made about it.

...like seeing home movies of your kids, a few years later. Sam Jones observes it. Ron Howard agrees wholeheartedly. Now that I've seen some of the interview where Sam talks about his own experiences as a director, I get that this is a shared observation between two accomplished directors.

Disney owes this guy anything he wants for saving that film, he pulled off something that must've almost seemed impossible at the time - to step in and complete a coherent movie from someone else's calamity.
