Good leather wraps are nice depends if you like glossy or more matte finished ito. Bad leather wraps suck. Ito quality really matters and it's annoying to do as it can snap. Seams and thickness variation can also be a pain. That said my favorite swords tsuka was wrapped in leather. Former sensei's prized sword.
Just absolutely gorgeous! The waki looks to be unokubi zukuri. The doe hide ito looks fantastic! Yeah I love my motohara. By far the highest quality katana in my collection. And Jason went above and beyond to keep me informed with the whole process. Good cuts too! Is that used japanese tatami? I find it the hardest to cut. Tha wakizashi cut very well!
It's all my phone... Samsung Galaxy Note 8 at the time of that recording. From here will be Note 20 or Nikon D850 if I can be bothered to break out the big camera ever. The phone is easier to deal with and has image stabilization now where the note 8 didn't.
These are incredible. Other stuff out there just doesn’t have the look I like, but these definitely do. Would love to get into the art of cutting, I realize these swords aren’t entry level
Very nice Daisho, love the detail and quality. I believe Karl is correct on the profile of the wakizashi, it definitely appears to be Unokubi Zukuri; love the historical relevance. Often times Naginata blades (that sometimes had unokubi zukuri blade profiles) were later repurposed as wakizashi.
@@scottjua Good to hear. Maybe Jason is eating some of the cost. I femember the tiger stuff being 2 to 3 times as much as the regular when i was shopping around for some to do up a James Raw blade....
I think sgt is Japanese powdered metallurgy steel like L6 but l6 is from a different country. Some of them have grain pattern. Probably gonna order one with a traditional geometry. Bugei write up on niku as a bit of a basis. I want a new hard target cutter. Might still get a slightly wider blade profile but want profile taper. Deff getting o kissaki. Might use an antique that has partial geometry specs also as a basis. I'm hoping they'll do tsunami ito for me. Need to check pricing still but thinking I might go with a rayskin saya. Also want a full wrap tsuna minimum. Wrap and a half if they can. But for wrap and a half Might wait for a rewrap and do it then. Want the seam in the middle like a old school wrap. Now I know you can get more work done on tsuba may see if they'll make me an extra one out of some mokume or something from reactive studios. Though I may not be able to do the theme I want. Random old Japanese painting. Wolves the moon some water and stars. Hard picking a color scheme though. I like blue ito. But want something other then white same and no idea on the saya.
I think anything is possible with the only limitation being budget or the smith's skillet or access to materials. My newest one I haven't done a video for has some custom tsuba work done.
@@scottjua yeah seems that way on their fb page a few are mentioned as having traditional geometry and saw a review of a hard target model mentioning it had niku. Tsuka cores breaking on me freaks me out and I've even had a nihonto one Crack while cutting really hard targets. Was old mind you but sketchy none the less. Panels and a Crack suuuucks. I was tempted to go custom mount on a random blade. Few places to get cheap lower end gendaito and shinsakuto. But also wanted something performance. Don't mind the modern tameshigiri geometries but I find certain traditional set up of sharpened properly perform better on a wider variety of targets. Thinking something like a naginata naoshi for the wakizashi if I do a daisho. Their skill seems up there whoever the Smith is. Apparently one guy does everything. Tsunami ito might be a no though xD even some custom tsukamaki artists hate using it. Plastic center makes it harder to fold and messes up normal hishigami Apparently. Now to gyaku mount the menuki yagyu style or center placement on the battle wrap. Either doing Ray skin saya and a wolf and waves at night theme. Or high end musashi inspired higo style mount. Gangi Maki but not the musashi tsuba. Probably rattan wrapped saya at the top.
@@scottjua also for materials hence why I mentioned a source in case thats a limitation for anyone else. If you google them it should pop up. They have a shakudo mokune and more normal styles. Plus stuff like timascus. Plus solutions for patina. Sending them a blank sheet shouldn't be too hard. But maybe not something they wanna deal with especially with covid going on. I'll sub so if you do a video on the one with the custom tsuba work I can take a look.

That is some fine craftsmanship! Top quality. Nice cutting too.
Motohara has the coolest katanas by far. Beautiful blade!!
Nicely done review, great looking swords and looks like they're smooth cutters. Thanks for sharing !

I haven't had a leather wrapped tsuka yet. Only silk, suede, and doeskin.
beautiful daisho and great tameshigiri
Thanks!

Out of curiosity, what camera did you use for the close-ups of the swords in the second half of the video? The picture was very sharp.

Would you say that modern steel is superior (although not historically accurate) compared to the traditional tamahagane katana steel?
Definitely

Bro, you're killin' me with that super-loud music. Then I have to turn the volume back up again to hear you speak. Otherwise, good video - thanks!
